Rice hybrid XL94017 when grown as per recommended practices, has a potential yield of 10.1 tons per hectare. It has a maturity range of 105 to 109 days. Approximate plant height is 107 cm. The hybrid forms long panicles (26-30 cm) with a good amount of secondary panicle branching.

Paddy grains of hybrid XL94017 are slightly aromatic, characterized by an amylose

content of approximately 22-23%, and the Alkali Spread Value is 5. The paddy has a straw color and long slender in shape, decorticated grain length and width is 7.3 and 2.3 mm, respectively and 1000 grain weight is 26 grams. Milling recovery (Grade 1) as measured on paddy obtained from trials grown in the Philippines is about 67% and head rice (Grade 1) is about 51.2%.

In field trials, XL94017 shows moderate resistance to rice blast and to sheath blight

but it is susceptible to bacterial leaf blight and to stemborer (deadhearts).

Fruit dimensions (length x diameter) averages 7.0 cm x 7.5 cm; however, fruits can be harvested when it reaches 5.0 cm in length. There are no known commercial varieties in the Philippines that are similar with “Gwapito”. The most commonly planted variety is a farmer‟s open-pollinated variety known as either “Mansanitas” or “Morado”. This OP variety also has round fruits with more green color. Aside from the fruit color, clearer differences can also be distinguished during the vegetative stage. :Gwapito” has slightly darker pigmentation in stems, bigger leaves and has the tendency to spread. “Mansanitas” or “Morado”, on the other hand, has lighter pigmentation, smaller leaves which appear thick and a more compact plant type. Among the existing commercial varieties grown in the field, the most popular is “Casino”. “Gwapito” can easily be differentiated from “Casino” based on fruit shape, fruit color and plant characteristics. “Gwapito” has purple green round fruits with size averaging 7.0 cm x 7.5 cm. Its stems and leaves have lighter pigmentation, leaves are large and has a tendency to spread. “Casino”, on the other hand, has uniform purple cylindrical fruits
