Middle Leadership Team Editorial

Welcome to our March 2017 edition of our IES gazette. Firstly I would like to introduce myself with this being my first IES newsletter edition. My name is Alex and I am the trainee SENCo here at IES, so you may have already met me during reviews and if not then you may do so in the future. On top of that, I also have the role as management to conduct the whole school and individual timetables and manage miscellaneous curriculum areas. To finish off I am also the lead Art & Design teacher here at IES.

So enough about me! Spring is in the air, the weather is warming and there have been smiles all around here at IES. As usual all pupils have been getting up to a whole bunch of things. From the Big Bang and photography show at the NEC, a visit in school from Zoo Lab and an ‘egg-cellent’ morning spent learning all about eggs (children’s request). On top of that all have been working super hard in their lessons as we are heading towards exam season.

As I already mentioned, some students participated within an egg-filled morning where they got to try eggs cooked in various different ways, join in with competitions and debate; what came first, the chicken or the egg? So in a nutshell (or an eggshell, if you like), two birds that weren't really chickens created a chicken egg, and hence, we have an answer: The egg came first, and then it hatched a chicken.

As Art and Design lead I would personally like to wish all of my GCSE Art students the best of luck as they approach the final steps towards their 10 hour long exam. Yes really 10 hours! Their efforts have not gone unnoticed and may success be with them always. Picasso said “every child is an artist” and all at IES prove that daily.

Talking about creativity, more students have been getting involved this month with the photography/media workshop on a Monday with guest Coventry University Media student Alex. GCSE students have taken this opportunity to build upon their Art course taking photos of local architecture and landscapes. Abigail also got involved and created a fantastic ‘Pop Art’ style image using photography and Photoshop together of a can. Very Andy Warhol-esque! To finish off I couldn’t leave without mentioning the fantastic World Book Day we had here at IES. Staff and students all had a super time, dressing up as their favourite book characters and spending the morning creating their own story and acting this out afterwards. We definitely have some drama superstars here at IES!

Thank you.

Alex Hyland Trainee SENCo, Timetable and Miscellaneous Manager, and Associate Teacher.

The 'Get to know the IES Team' feature is where each month a different member of the IES team will be interviewed for you to find out more about them. This month we interviewed Catherine.

Q: So, how long have you been working at IES for, and who are you key worker for?

A: I started just after Christmas in January and I am key worker for Destiny Walker.

Q: What's the best thing about working at IES?

A: The laughter! No matter what type of day you’re having, someone will always be there to make you laugh.

Q: Who is your hero?

A: Both my mum and dad are my heroes. They have taught me that I can do anything I put my mind to and have supported me in everything I do. They’ve always taught me that being happy is the most important thing in life.

Q: What do you do to relax?

A: I love to read and go for a run or do some yoga when I get the chance.

Q: If you were an animal for a day what animal would you choose, and why?

A: I’d be my partner’s dog! All he does is sleep all day and wake up when its dinner time... Heaven!!

Q: Name 3 things you couldn't live without.

A: Food, family and laugher!

Q: What song best sums you up?

A: I don’t think one song covers me! I’m an eclectic mix! Haha

Q: What is one thing you are looking forward to?

A: Buying a house with my partner in the next couple of years and lots of sunny holidays

Lewis: If you were a tree & you had to be chopped down & made into paper, which book would you like to be?

A: The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.

Q: Final question, what's your funniest/best moment at IES?

A: One of my best moments has been teaching GCSE statistics and watching the students get to grips with some fairly tough topics. My funniest moment was on the circus bike (see April newsletter for pictures). If you would like to suggest questions for next month, write down your question and put it in the suggestion box at school, or, tell your key worker who can pass it on to the Magazine Team.

The IES Eggs-perience. Some of our students had mentioned that they have not tried all different types of eggs, so we put on a morning dedicated to tasting them! Students got to taste hard boiled, scrambled and poached eggs as well as an omelette. These were enjoyed by all. There were other activities including a debate as to who came first: The chicken or the egg? It was decided that the egg came first after a very good point raised from Whitney. Pupils then decorated a hardboiled egg and had an egg rolling competition. Whitney was the winner as her egg was the least broken. Some lovely egg designs were created by Rhylee, Kaine, Abigail and Charlotte – but not all of these eggs survived the roll!

The last activity involved students protecting a raw egg with materials they found in the class room. They wrapped the egg in their chosen material and then Natalie dropped them out of the Maths room window. All of the eggs were intact – can you believe it!!

Here’s what some of our students have

Students at IES enjoyed a visit from Rebecca at ZooLab who brought in her menagerie of animals. Students were keen to see what creatures she had brought along and asked lots of questions. We all learned some very interesting facts, for example did you know that cockroaches have two brains, one in their head and one in their bottom? Some of our students were very brave and even touched and held some of the animals, including a snail, cockroach, millipede, snakes, mice and even a rat! Huge thanks to Rebecca who was extremely knowledgeable and lovely.

Here is some of the D&T work one of our students Leon has produced during his sign writing Design Technology lesson. He was so proud of what he had made that he wanted to put it on the staff’s car personally. Well Done Leon it looks great. Now kayleigh's car is powered by fairy dust.

Charlie has been making use of the interactive whiteboard and showing off her knowledge on adjectives. Charlie had to select the correct sentence to match the picture and get the mouse all the way to the top, great job Charlie!

Rhylee went to the Midland Air museum. We looked at all the different exhibits.

Rhylee got a lesson on flying a passenger airplane and sat in a jet fighter.

PE-Here Leon used a laptop to research two warm up stretches to do before exercising. Leon was able to perform the exercises safely and explain what part of his body they stretched.

Leon had a college visit in Loughborough this month. It was first thing in the morning, leaving us with an afternoon to explore the area. Leon had been wanting to take staff around the local area and insisted on a visit to Beacon Hill, the second highest point in Leicestershire. The top has a monument placed by Ordinance Survey, which makes up part of the GPS network for the UK, we took the time afterwards to go for a look around a local National Forests area, where Leon found a very old tree that looked just amazing. He took the opportunity to stop for a quick pic!

Who couldn't resist a donkey cuddle? Lorna enjoying her Animal Studies. Did you know that donkeys are used in emotional and wellbeing therapy?

Michael looks forward to horse riding each week. Michael is learning to trot and control the horse.

Birmingham Hippodrome Exclusive

At IES we have been working closely with Birmingham Hippodrome and learning all about their relaxed performances which enable the audiences to access the joy of theatre without feeling isolated or scared. Through this process, they have tailored the pantomimes especially for them and are now hoping to widen this for specific shows. On July 3rd, they are very excited to be showing a relaxed performance of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time. The audience will be made up of young people and adults who perhaps have studied or are studying the book or simply enjoy theatre but just find that being in a large noisy place too confusing and frightening. Birmingham Hippodrome plan to help the audience in advance and will offer pre- show materials to help them familiarize themselves with Birmingham Hippodrome. At the actual performance Birmingham Hippodrome hope to offer a more relaxed atmosphere in the foyers, with lower frequency front of house calls and more activities to do in advance of the show. They will be opening the doors earlier than for a normal show, to give the audience time to get to know the theatre and just find their way around. There will be breakout rooms with a show relay running in case audience members just need to chill out for a while. The stage show will not be as loud and the house lights will not be totally turned off, so it will not be too dark in the auditorium. The auditorium doors will be left open and the audience members are free to come and go as they please. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time will be shown on Monday 3rd July 2017 @ 7.30pm and ticket costs will be £8 plus booking fee for this performance only. To book tickets call: 0844 338 5000 For more information on this wonderful show please contact: Liz Leck Creative Learning Manager - Birmingham Hippodrome 0121 689 3064
