© 2011 Michiana Public Broadcasting Corporation Statement of Frequency: WNIT PUBLIC TELEVISION PLANNER (USPS 103-650 ISSN 1523-9373) is published bi-monthly by The Michiana Public Broadcasting Corporation, a non-profit corporation in the State of Indiana at 300 West Jefferson Boulevard, South Bend, IN 46601. Mary’s MessageMary Pruess President and GM, WNIT Public Television
WNIT Public Television constantly strives to better serve its stakeholders. We are an active, engaged member of the community and look forward to reaching our viewers with an even stronger broadcast signal and an ever-increasing commitment to the Michiana area.
WNIT will take a giant step forward this spring when we install new transmitter equipment in our broadcast tower. The new equipment, made possible by a grant from the Digital Distribution Fund of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, improves the strength and quality of our signal to help eliminate pixilation, the cliff effect and other transmission issues. The upgrade in transmitter power has long been one of our top priorities because it increases the size of our broadcast area and improves the quality of signal to all viewers.
According to our engineers, the transmitter power upgrade will increase our Effective Radiated Power (ERP) from our current level of 50 kilowatts to 85 kilowatts. It expands our coverage circle from a 48.6 mile radius to a 50.25 mile radius, resulting in a greater potential audience for WNIT – from about 1,180,000 viewers currently to almost 1,250,000 – an increase of some 70,000 viewers. In addition, it will offer a stronger signal to our current viewers and increase the redundancy factor and reliability of our transmitter. The equipment change should be accomplished during overnight hours in early May with little interruption to our viewers.*
WNIT also continues to serve the Michiana community by maximizing the use of our Community Room and studio. We recently hosted a South Bend mayoral debate sponsored by the Martin Luther King Men’s Club and other community organizations. This follows on the heels of day-long training sessions for both the St. Joseph County Chamber of Commerce Youth Leadership and Adult Leadership programs. To date, WNIT has provided Community Room meeting space for almost 800 persons and taken over 1,200 on tours of the facility.
During April, the Center for Public Media in conjunction with the St. Joseph County Public Library hosted a taping of Rocket Boys by Homer Hickam for an episode of DINNER AND A BOOK. We also conducted a special sneak preview of Freedom Riders, coupled with a discussion of the impact of the Freedom Riders on the local civil rights movement. Then, on May 7, we will partner with the Center for History to host the third annual Derby Day party, with an anticipated 150 people watching the Run for the Roses in our Community Room.
WNIT – serving the Michiana community with advanced technology and civic engagement.

target, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., against the backdrop of the seething and turbulent forces in American society that led these two men to their violent and tragic collision in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4, 1968.
“Soundtrack for a Revolution” Monday, May 9, 9pmSOUNDTRACK FOR A REVOLU-TION tells the story of the American civil rights movement through its powerful music — the freedom songs protesters sang on picket lines, in mass meetings, in paddy wagons and in jail cells as they fought for justice and equality. The music enabled African Americans to sing words they could not say and it was crucial in help-ing protesters as they faced down brutal aggression with dignity and non-violence.
“Freedom Riders” Monday, May 16, 9pmThey called themselves the Freedom Riders, and they managed to bring the president and the entire American public face to face with the challenge of correcting civil-rights inequities that plagued the nation. Veteran filmmaker Stanley Nelson’s inspirational documentary is the first feature-length film about this courageous band of civil-rights activists. Nelson chronicles a chapter of American history that stands as an aston-ishing testament to the accomplishment of
youth and what can result from the incredi-ble combination of personal conviction and the courage to organize against all odds.
“The Trials of J. Robert Oppenheimer” Monday, May 23, 9pmJ. Robert Oppenheimer’s life and legacy are inextricably linked to America’s most famous top-secret initiative — the Manhattan Project. But after World War II, this brilliant and intense scien-tist, tasked with the development of the atomic bomb and widely considered one of the most important minds of the 20th century, fell from the innermost circles of American science. He was accused of having communist sympathies and was pressed to explain his relationships with known communists.
AMERICAN MASTERS “Marvin Gaye: What’s Going On” Monday, May 9, 10:30pmHis standing among the most enduring 20th-century American musical artists is without question, yet his story is rarely told beyond the tragic circumstances of his death. Enormously talented and equally complicated, Gaye created an intimate style — full of honesty, integrity and vulnerability — and essentially gave
the world his autobiography in lyrics and melody.
SECRETS OF THE DEAD“China’s Terracotta Warriors” Wednesday, May 4, 8pmThe extraordinary story of China’s 8,000 terracotta warriors begins two centuries before the birth of Christ. The first emperor of China was preparing an extravagant tomb for his journey into the afterlife — and decreed that he be protected forever by a monumental army. Since then no one has seen these ancient warriors in their original splendor, brightly painted and fully armed, ready to protect their Emperor for all eternity.
“Sinking Atlantis” Wednesday, May 11, 8pmFive thousand years ago, the Minoans, Europe’s first great civilization, flourished on the island of Crete. They were the first Europeans to use writing, and their tech-nologically advanced and rich artistic culture became the setting for famous Greek myths about Theseus, Icarus and the Minotaur. Yet in their heyday, the Minoans were wiped from the pages of history.

NOVA Wednesdays, 9pm “Ghosts of Machu Picchu” May 4, 9pmPerched atop a mountain crest, mys-teriously abandoned more than four centuries ago, Machu Picchu is the most famous archeological ruin in the West-ern hemisphere and an iconic symbol of the power and engineering prowess of the Inca. NOVA joins a new generation of archeologists as they probe areas of Machu Picchu that haven’t been touched since the time of the Incas and unearth burials of the people who built the sacred site.
“Secrets of Stonehenge” May 11, 9pmDated to the late Stone Age, Stonehenge may be the best-known and most mysteri-ous relic of prehistory. How did prehistoric people quarry, transport, sculpt and erect these giant stones? Granted exclusive access to the dig site at Bluestonehenge, a prehistoric stone circle monument recently discovered about a mile from Stonehenge, NOVA cameras join a new generation of researchers finding important clues to this enduring mystery.
“Riddles of the Sphinx” May 18, 9pm The Great Sphinx is disappearing. It would not be the first time in its nearly 5,000-year history that the sands of Egypt have buried this wonder of the ancient world, but today, the Sphinx confronts a threat far worse than blanketing by dunes. The face of the mysterious pharaoh is being sandblasted to oblivion, its features eroded beyond recognition by whipping winds, while its limestone lion’s body is being dis-solved by rising saltwater and sewage and shaken by planes, cars and construction.
“Building Pharaoh’s Ship” May 18, 10pm A magnificent trading vessel embarks on a royal expedition to a mysterious, treasure-laden land called Punt. Is this journey, intricately depicted on the wall of one of Egypt’s most impressive temples, mere myth or was it a reality? NOVA travels to the legendary temple, built some 3,500 years ago for the celebrated female pharaoh Hatshepsut, in search of answers to this tantalizing archeological mystery.
“Secrets of the Parthenon” May 25, 9pm Erected by the ancient Greeks as a temple to Athena, the Parthenon has served as a church, a fortress, an ammunition dump and the model for countless banks, court-houses and museums across the world. How did the ancient Athenians build their great temple with incredible preci-sion in a mere eight years? How did they manage to incorporate subtle, eye-pleasing distortions into the Parthenon’s layout, such that there are few straight lines or right angles to be seen? And, most baffling of all, how did they accomplish all this without an overall building plan or blue-print, which would be indispensable to a modern architect?

“Mexico and Peru: A Hidden Race” May 10, 8pmIn Mexico and Peru, Professor Gates ex-plores the almost unknown history of the significant numbers of black people — the two countries together received far more slaves than did the United States — brought to these countries as early as the 16th and 17th centuries, and the worlds of culture that their descendants have created.
INDEPENDENT LENS “A Film Unfinished” Tuesday, May 3, 10pmThis haunting film about a film examines a classic Nazi propaganda film used by historians for decades to provide insight into the realities of life in the Warsaw Ghetto in 1942. The recent discovery of a second reel in an East German archive has thrown the veracity and intent of the Ghetto footage into question.
“Bhutto” Tuesday, May 10, 10pmAs the first Muslim woman elected to lead an Islamic nation, former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto’s life story unfolds like a tale of Shakespearean dimensions. She evolved from a pampered princess to polarizing politician in the most dangerous country on Earth. Accused
of rampant corruption, imprisoned, then exiled abroad, Bhutto was called back to Pakistan in 2007 as her country’s best hope for democracy.

NOVA “Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives” Wednesday, June 8, 9pm
Mark Oliver Everett, better known as E, is the lead singer of U.S. cult band the EELS. What most of his fans don’t know is that Mark’s father, Hugh Everett III, was one of America’s top quantum physicists. In 1957, Hugh Everett came up with a revolution-ary theory that predicted the existence of parallel universes. It is only by entering the paradoxical world of quantum mechanics that Mark can hope to understand why he was such a stranger to his own father.

they use to investigate the world of sleep. From human narcoleptics to sleepwalking cats, from recurrent nightmares to those who can’t dream, each sequence contains a vital clue to the question these scientists are pursuing: Why do we dream?
NIAGARA FALLS Wednesday, June 8, 10pmNIAGARA FALLS is more than the celebration of a natural wonder; it’s a study of human achievement and human folly on an epic scale. It’s a tale of affable lunacy and high drama, danger and desire. The awesome Niagara Falls was the nation’s first great symbol, an emblem of a vast, untamed continent of beauty and limitless resources.
NATURE “Wild Balkans” Sunday, June 12, 8pmThick forests, vast wetlands, deep chasms – this is a wild, inaccessible place that belongs more to myth than reality. Through the centuries this land has burned its way into the soul and spirit of its people. The jagged contours have thrown long dark shadows over the history of the peninsula, always in the middle, between forces of the East and the West.
“Victoria Falls” June 19Cutting across the Zambezi River, Victoria Falls is the largest waterfall in the world. This awesome force of nature divides two natural worlds – the tranquil meander-ing river above the cascade and the raging abyss of the gorge below. The upper river is idyllic, running shallow through sand-stone hills where elephants, lions, hippos, crocodiles, buffalo, zebra, antelope and otters thrive. In a single vertical drop, the river plummets twice the height of Niagara Falls into the wild waters and heavy spray of the narrow gorge, where 35 different raptor species rear their young.

SECRETS OF THE DEAD“Doping for Gold” Tuesday, June 14, 8pmIn the 1970s, female East German athletes came out of nowhere to dominate interna-tional sport. But behind their success lay a secret, state-sponsored doping program that distributed untested steroids and male hormones to athletes as young as 12. Many of these girls had no knowledge that they were being doped, and now, as grown women (and men), their broken bodies and damaged psyches bear witness to the cruelty of a government that pur-sued international glory and gold at the expense of its most acclaimed citizens.
“Michelangelo Revealed” Wednesday, June 15, 8pmThroughout his masterful career, Michelangelo glorified the church, etch-ing Catholic ideals into the sculptures and artwork that defined religion for the masses. Now, 500 years after his death, art historian Antonio Forcellino has found evidence of Michelangelo’s involvement with a clandestine fellowship trying to reform the Catholic Church from within. The group’s radical ideas and accusations of corruption were considered heretical and punishable by death.
THE MYSTERY OF CHACO CANYONWednesday, June 15, 10pmChaco Canyon, located in northwest New Mexico, is perhaps the only site in the world constructed in an elaborate pattern that mirrors the yearly cycle of the sun and the 19-year cycle of the moon. How did an ancient civilization, with no known written language, arrange its buildings into a virtual celestial calen-dar, spanning an area roughly the size of Ireland? This program presents substantial evidence that the Chacoan people expressed a complex solar and lunar cos-mology in their magnificent architecture.
BOXING GYM Thursday, June 16, 9pmFrom the verite documentarian Frederick Wiseman in his trademark fly-on-the-wall style, BOXING GYM uses the boxing gym as an example of the American “melt-ing pot,” where whites, blacks, Hispanics and people of many races and ethnic back-grounds meet, talk and train — and in some cases dream together.

It’s been one year since WNIT moved into the new Center for Public Media at the corner of Jefferson and Lafayette Boulevards in downtown South Bend. We’ve made extensive use of our new building; about 1,200 persons have taken a tour of the new facility and almost 800 have attended meet-ing in the Community Room.
The Ganey Studio Complex was the scene of a live Town Hall program, “South Bend: Thriving or Dying?” The studio was also the scene for the University of Notre Dame Shakespeare competition for middle and high school students and for the WNIT / St. Joseph County Public Library’s “One Book, One Michiana” taping of Rocket Boys by Homer Hickam, Jr.
The Community Room provided meeting space for the IU South Bend music faculty, staged a South Bend mayoral debate and welcomed the Lunch and Learn series from the City of South Bend. WNIT – delivering on its promise to a convener of community stakeholders.

Production News
For many years, WNIT has maintained a strong working relationship with Michiana schools and colleges. Through a series of classes and internships, WNIT has taught students real-world skills in video production. For the past seven years, WNIT has accepted approximately 12 interns per semester from IVY Tech for training in the areas of studio and field production, including lighting, audio, editing, directing, graphics and studio and field videography. “The students are hands-on from day one. We believe the more you get students involved and the more opportunities you present, the students walk away with a greater appreciation of what it takes to make it happen,” says Kelsy Zumbrun, producer/director and one of the program heads.
The program consists of three required semesters with a fourth semester optional. Each course is graded and consists of 120 contact hours per semester. “Ivy Tech is so pleased with the program that it has begun replicating our template across the state,” says senior producer Brenda Bowyer. “That’s a great feeling for us to see the program we started and continue to cultivate being spread to other statewide campuses.”
Through its partnership with IVY Tech, WNIT teaches students the basics of video studio and field production including techniques using broadcast equipment both on site at the WNIT studio and in the field. More than 50 students have participated in this hands-on learning project and have gained marketable skills not only in video production, but about responsibility, time management and the expectations of professionalism in the real world of work. “One of the benefits to moving our studio to downtown South Bend has been the doubling of the size of the program,” remarks Angel Hernandez, vice president of production. “We are more
accessible to the community and it has been reflected in just one semester since we’ve settled in to our new facility.”
WNIT has also provided internships with many educational institutions the last several years, including students from Indiana University South Bend, Andrews University, Saint Mary’s College, University of Notre Dame, Goshen College, Manchester College, Bethel College and area high schools.

Directors’Circle
The WNIT Directors’ Circle represents a very dedicated and select group of individuals who, by their commitment, contribute to the total annual support which is the foundation of WNIT’s operating budget. These essential annual contributions make possible the great programs that everyone in Michiana enjoys.
Brian & Ginger Lake
This month, WNIT shines the spotlight on a couple with a long and deep association with WNIT. Brian and Ginger Lake have been witness to almost every important event at our station. Brian has served in many capacities on the WNIT Board of Directors. He was a member of the Board from 1978 to 2005 and was president of the Board from 1983 to 1985.
Ginger and Brian hosted a well-attended Directors’ Circle event and both have appeared at events from the annual Auction to manning phones for the membership campaigns. They have provided invaluable assistance and guidance to the WNIT staff and Board of Directors. Ginger served on the board of all three station Galas. She has an innate sense of “how it should be done.” Both Brian and Ginger Lake have contributed a stability and sustainability to WNIT, and their presence confirms a thread of continuity to WNIT. We thank them for their long service to WNIT and appreciate their direction, leadership and good humor.
