What is planetary health?Without a healthy biosphere there is no thriving human future. Simply put, planetary health is the study of “well-being for people and the planet.”* This emerging field of applied research, policy, and practice, presents an intentional and catalytic effort to take on one of the greatest challenges the world has faced. It seeks to characterize the impact of human-caused disruptions of Earth’s natural systems on our health, taking a solutions-oriented approach, bridging different disciplines and sectors, and learning from past successes and failures.

How does the environment affect human health? What we do to the world comes back to affect us, and not always in ways that we would expect. Clean air, water, and soil are necessary ingredients for life. Human activity impacts climate, biodiversity, oceans, pollution, availability of arable land and freshwater, and more. To safeguard our health, we need action - and that depends on massive collaboration for research, and a commitment to action across disciplinary, sectoral, and national boundaries.

What is the Planetary Health Alliance?Founded in 2016 with support from the Rockefeller Foundation, the Planetary Health Alliance (PHA) is a global consortium of over 140 institutions from more than 30 countries committed to advancing planetary health research, education, policy, and public outreach efforts. Its annual meeting and conference convenes the international planetary health community to advance new collaborations and ground-breaking solutions to planetary health challenges.

Why Stanford? Located in the heart of the Silicon Valley, Stanford University is a leader in research, design thinking, cross-cutting collaborations, systems and scaling, and more. This year’s planetary health conference, spearheaded by Stanford’s Center for Innovation in Global Health and Woods Institute for the Environment, seeks to connect this culture of innovation with problems that arise at the intersections of health and environment, gathering global and Bay Area leaders.

Sponsorship Opportunities for the 2019 Planetary Health Annual Meeting

1. TRAVEL SCHOLARSHIP: Gold ($65K USD), Silver ($30K), Bronze ($10K) Sponsorship levels The Travel Scholarship at the Planetary Health Annual Meeting expands the involvement of voices that are currently underrepresented in the field of planetary health. Through a competitively awarded process, students and early-career professionals from low- and middle-income countries are supported to attend the Annual Meeting. Awardees lead poster and oral presentations, engage with new mentors, and write post-conference blog posts on how they will integrate planetary health in their work. Travel scholarships cover registration, accommodations, and economy-class travel. 2. PLANETARY HEALTH STORYTELLING FOR ACTION: Gold ($65K USD), Silver ($30K), Bronze ($10K) Sponsorship

The 2019 meeting aims to inspire our audience of researchers, practitioners, and educators to more authentically and effectively communicate planetary health messages through increasing their exposure to different traditions, voices, mediums, and messaging strategies relevant to planetary health.

• Indigenous Knowledge Initiative: We seek to highlight the value of indigenous perspectives on planetary health through tradition, ritual, and storytelling. Initiatives include a workshop on designing community-based research to most effectively engage with traditional ecological knowledge; a day-long retreat with elders leading storytelling and discussion sessions; and travel support for indigenous voices presenting as keynotes and panelists.

● Storytelling Workshop: The Planetary Health Storytelling Workshop will focus on helping participants understand “the way stories work, work on us, and can work for us.” Participants can learn to craft a narrative that translates knowledge and data into stories that inspire understanding and action.

● Planetary Health Film Festival: The Planetary Health Film Festival aims to celebrate the planet, awaken us to radically rethink our relationship to nature, and inspire us toward a new path forward. The 2018 Planetary Health Annual Meeting featured Albatross, a powerful visual journey exploring the consequences of plastic

pollution. The 2019 films will be selected by the Annual Meeting Programming Committee from submitted nominations.

3. PLANETARY HEALTH NEXT-GENERATION INITIATIVE Gold ($65K USD), Silver ($30K), Bronze ($10K) Sponsorship A rising generation of planetary health scholars is seeking training and professional entry points to tackle interdisciplinary, cross-sectoral challenges. The Next-Generation Initiative empowers a growing network of emerging scholars to better navigate the field, cultivate meaningful mentorship relationships, and develop peer-to-peer networks.

● Speaker Ambassador Program: This program matches speakers with a next-generation participant based on shared academic interests. The Speaker Ambassador supports social media coverage of the speaker throughout the conference and writes a post-conference blog post on the speaker’s background and work. This one-on-one connection can provide invaluable mentorship at the conference and beyond.

● Mentorship Lunch: Organizers thoughtfully pair planetary health leaders across sectors with small groups of students and early-career professionals for an informal networking opportunity. Mentees get a chance to engage senior leaders, obtain guidance on academic and career trajectories, and ask deeper questions about planetary health.

● Emerging Scholars Workshop: The Emerging Scholars Workshop jumpstarts a peer-to-peer network by engaging students and early-career professionals in collaborative brainstorming. Nominated leaders from the PHA Emerging Scholars Network facilitate. At last year’s workshop, participants created a blueprint for building a planetary health club, culminating in a comprehensive guide that has been broadly distributed to the planetary health community and is hosted on the PHA website.

● Next Gen Watch Parties: For those unable to attend the Annual Meeting in person, “Next Gen Watch Parties” at PHA member institutions will allow viewers to livestream the plenary sessions of the conference, interact with speakers in real-time, and engage with mentors through facilitated conversations via the Planetary Health Online Platform.
