The annual Pine Beach Independence Day parade and ceremony honored the past community accomplishments of Mayor Russ Corby and his wife, Judy, and featured the traditional parade of governing body officials, decorated vintage cars, bikes, and Pine Beach and nearby fire companies and first aid squads. Field games were later held at Vista Park.

Alumni of Admiral Farragut Academy, whose original campus was located on the Pine Beach shoreline for over 60 years, recently fundraised for and installed a historical marker on the bluff near the area where the front of Farragut Hall once stood.

that nonsense, and you don’t need anybody’s approval to feel good about yourself.• They’re insecure and want to reinforce “groupthink,” as in, what they think, the group does. If you don’t like being told what to do by your own parents, why listen to some classmate or supposed friend?• They’re afraid of those different from them, or can’t handle anybody criticizing their own poor decision making. Move away and live on. Those types are going to have a lot of problems down the line, and you don’t want to be dragged down with them.• They might have a warped set of rules for how they think their world, or at least the world of young adults, work. You make your own path in life using the good influences and avoiding the bad. Pick a different way.If a simple “no thanks” doesn’t work, try these:• “I don’t like the taste.”• “It smells gross and I don’t want my breath to stink like that.”• “My parents will kill me, and I don’t want to get grounded.”

Think Everybody Drinks? Think Again. cont’d

• “One of my relatives has a problem with this, and I don’t want to end up addicted because it might run in the family.”• “Do I stutter?”In the long run, alcohol is just going to end up harming your life and your future. If you need further proof on the matter, here’s how Adam Sandler put it in The Wedding Singer: “Alcohol equals puke equals smelly mess equals nobody likes you!”

cause damage to yourself and those around you. Among these misguided suggestions is that it’s okay to experiment with alcohol, because it’s cool to drink and pretty much everybody does it. The opposite is true – in fact, 70 percent of youth age 12 to 20 are “too smart to start” drinking alcoholic beverages. That statistic might be all fine and great on paper, but what about real life situations where “just saying no” isn’t easy, like when a close friend offers it? You’ll probably worry about losing a friend and no longer being accepted by turning them down, but if they’re trying to push you into something you don’t want to do, you’re going to want to look again at your friendship: a true friend respects your decisions, and anybody who ditches you for going against them was never a real friend to start with. It’s also likely that others in your group feel the same way as you do and you’ll find support and stronger allies in the end. When faced with a peer pressure situation, think about why they might be doing it:• They might want to make you feel less important so they can feel better about themselves. Nobody needs

Before we can begin to consider what’s ahead, we would like to reflect on our remarkable school opening. Our school year has gotten off to a great start. It was wonderful to see and personally meet so many of our Pine Beach School families at Back To School Night. Being a part of a child’s education dramatically increases their chances for success. Our P.T.O is off to a very busy start as well. Our P.T.O is a group of very dedicated people who provide

constant effort and support to our school and community. Thank you to all of the families that support our fundraising. This year we are fundraising for a new playground. We are continuing our student recognition program at Pine Beach Elementary this year. The teachers have the opportunity to nominate a Pine Beach Idol each week. Each week we will randomly select students who have been nominated by a teacher or staff member for showing good citizenship and character. The students will be Individuals Demonstrating

Outstanding Leadership Skills. These students will be photographed for our Idol Bulletin Board and will be featured on our morning announcements, within our newsletter and on our web page. We are continuing to focus on teaching Respect this year. Our motto is, “Panthers Practice the Golden Rule”.We value and welcome input from our parents and community members and continue to seek ways to communicate and partner with these great resources. Please feel free to contact us with questions, suggestions or concerns. Together we can make a difference in the lives of our children as we prepare them for the future. Please visit our web-site (www.trschools.com) often to see the current events and happenings here at Pine Beach Elementary.Sincerely,Mrs. Moran-TutzauerPrincipalMrs. JovanisSupervisor of Instruction
