Hundreds of runners leave the starting line in the dust at the 15th Annual Pine Beach 5K.

PINE BEACH - Hundreds of runners and their friends and families swarmed the Vista Park area on Sunday, June 23rd for the 15th Annual Pine Beach 5K and One Mile Riverside Run.Co-sponsored by the Pine Beach Municipal Alliance through the Governor’s Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse [GCADA], the event furthered positive activity through the strength, fitness and stamina required to run either race, the courses of which wound their way along picturesque Riverside Drive and, for the five kilometer run, through quiet neighborhood streets across the borough.As in past years, runners stretched along Vista Park and consumed energy-rich bananas provided under a tent through Super Foodtown prior to their events. The Pine Beach Police Department were on

hand to lead the race in a pace car driven by Chief John M. Sgro, and the Beachwood First Aid Squad was joined by the South Toms River First Aid Squad in traveling the course on bicycles alongside the runners to ensure health safety and to provide aid when needed.First up was the One Mile Riverside Run, which was called for 8:15 and included many younger runners, some with their parents, who lined up at the starting line near the Pine Beach Yacht Club. Mayor Lawrence Cuneo called the race and about 30 youths and 20 parents took off east along the riverfront course under a bright, shining sun.Less than six minutes later, the top three runners crossed the finish line: Kyle Sarno, 15, at 5:22.7; Dylan Burns, 13, at 5:45.1; and Nicholas Burns, 10, at 5:59.6.

At 9 am, many of those present lined up for the five kilometer race. Race organizer Rick Lill noted that Sally Kalksma, who first started the event in 1998, would for the first time be running in it.At the finish line, the top three male runners were Brian Quilty, 23, with 16:00.9; Randy Faiges, 22, with 16:38.1; and Scott Sarno, 45, with 17:10.8.Top three female runners were Noel Whitall, 35, with 17:37.6; Dianne Deoliveira, 42, with 19:36.2; and Lillian Wolfson, 28, with 19:45.9.For more information and results, please visit www.pinebeach5k.com

Know the Facts About: ALCOHOL

Alcohol is a depressant that affects nearly every part of your body. The damage it does now can impact the rest of your life.

WHAT IS IT?Alcohol is a depressant derived from the fermentation of natural sugars in fruits, vegetables and grains. These are brewed and distilled into a wide range of beverages with various alcohol contents.

THE RISKSIn small doses, some of the short-term effects of alcohol are reduced tension and relaxation, but these are also accompanied by reduced inhibition (your ability to stop yourself from doing something you know you shouldn’t), coordination and reaction time – all of which put you at risk. When you drink a lot and drink fast (binge drinking), the risks go up even faster. In addition to the serious danger of alcohol poisoning, the depressant effects of alcohol can overwhelm your body’s defenses. Unable to move and think clearly, you can do risky and reckless things that are unsafe, or even lethal. Each year, approximately 5,000 people under the age of 21 die as a result of underage drinking, including about 1,900 deaths from car accidents, 1,600 homicides, 300 suicides, and hundreds more due to accidents like falls, burns and drownings.

LONG-TERM EFFECTSAlcohol travels through your bloodstream and can damage your brain, stomach, liver, kidneys and muscles. As a teenager, your body is still developing, so damage done to it now can affect the rest of your life. Over time, drinking can wreak havoc with your body and mind.

THE BOTTOM LINEYes, it’s legal for people 21 and older. One reason is that alcohol can have seriously dangerous, long-term impacts on a body and brain that are still developing. Also, statistics show that more teens are killed by alcohol than by all illegal drugs combined.

The Summer Arts & Crafts ProgramAny Pine Beach child who will be attending elementary school in the 2013-2014 school year is invited to attend a 5 week Artistic Talent Program that meets twice a week at the Pine Beach Municipal Building. Children will meet for an hour a day in an age appropriate class to do arts & crafts, and gain knowledge of substance abuse:

Dates: Tuesday and Thursday mornings July 9th through August 8th

The Pine Beach Municipal Alliance hosted a magic show at the elementary school in May that featured an anti-drug and alcohol message to the students present.

We wish you all a very nice summer vacation and look forward to seeing you and your children in SEPTEMBER. Once school is out, many families are at a loss about how to fill two months of their children’s free time. Images of summertime are usually cast in a light of hot, lazy, relaxing days by the pool, but the reality

for most working families is the struggle to balance the demands of adult work schedules with providing safe activities for children. This dilemma often results in hectic, stress-filled days comparable to those during the school year. While summer camp is an option for some, the cost of day and overnight camps can be too expensive for many families’ budgets. Structured activities are beneficial, but parents

and caregivers should also keep in mind the advantages of unstructured time for children. So what do we do to keep young children busy, yet also allow them to enjoy the summer months? Whether your child is a preschooler or school-age, a wealth of opportunities for fun, educational, and even relaxing activities are at your finger tips. Here are some tips that may be useful for families:
