EKIDEN XX

By Amy Katz

Photos by Dave Kuntz

I don’t know why I never participated in the Ekiden relay race organized by Bob Norton and Bobby Porter of the Snail’s Pace Fountain Valley chapter, but I am really glad I came out and ran it this year. As people arrived at Central Park in Huntington Beach, they put their name in a box so that teams of four could be randomly drawn. The first person selected was assigned to run one mile, the next person two miles, the third person three miles, and the final person four miles. There was such a large attendance we had 15 teams of four, plus two walker teams of three. People came from Fountain Valley and Laguna Hills, plus AREC (a Long Beach running club), and Team Challenge (Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation). Bob and Bobby then explained the route to us, and then we did a warm-up jog dedicated to those former participants who are no longer with us. Then it was time to start the race! I was happy to be running the one mile since I had done a 20-mile long run the day before, but it was really tough running that fast! There were people of all paces running, and everyone cheered everyone else on as they passed the start/finish multiple times. Those running the 3 mile and 4 mile had some hills to deal with on the road outside the park, but everyone finished and no one really cared which team finished first. Various prizes were given out (fastest co-ed team, fastest all women’s team, second fastest runner in the 2 mile, etc), and raffle prizes such as draw-string bags and t-shirts were handed out. We also enjoyed a big spread of pastries, fruit, and other snacks. Everyone enjoyed themselves and agreed that the Ekiden should be run again next year!

COACH

Here in Southern Orange County we have a unique landscape that works to our advantage in our

training. It’s the combination of flat, hills and mountains all within a 30 minute drive from where we

live. You’re not in Kansas! So what does that do for us as runners? It gives us the training ground to

gain strength and speed. Many of us already take advantage of this.

Run the flats of Irvine or on the beach boardwalks in Newport or Huntington. Those runs allow us to

run longer runs for half and full marathon training but it also gives us an opportunity for speed work.

Take advantage of a flat run at least once a week and work on speed. Our Wednesday night runs on

the bike path are great for a Fartlek (yes, that’s a real running term).

Hills are part of your life if you live in Mission Viejo, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, Aliso Viejo and other

south county cities. Running hills is an opportunity for building strength. Learn to push the uphills

through the top and down the other side. Practice pacing so that you feel strong through more than

one hill. Also use downhills to increase your stride length. Lean forward and stride out. This increase

in stride length will show up as increased speed. Running hills will help build your leg muscles and

give you more stamina.

For those few who have the time and desire to try mountain running it opens up a whole new world.

There are several local “easy” runs and many are out and back so a turn-around point can be

selected at any distance. One down side of this is you won’t be a very exciting date the night of a

long mountain run.
