“Quilts: the Art of Fiber”
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Experience an explosion of color and texture in an exhibit that will be
on display at the Center for Creative Leader-
ship November 28, 2011 through March 29, 2012.
The public is invited to view the exhibit dur-
ing office hours by calling 336-510-0975 for
an appointment. The public also is welcome to
attend a reception on Friday, January 27, from
5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Center.
The Piedmont Quilter’s Guild puts on an ex-
hibit that wraps one in warmth and color for
the winter season. Quilting has grown from the
traditional patterns of our ancestors to what
we consider “fiber art” today. . .

Huge thanks to the amazing response of breath-
taking quilts to show at the Center of Crea-
tive Leadership's Fall Exhibition.
This company supports local artists and we are
certainly members of that community.
We had 48 quilts submitted by 23 guild mem-
bers. Thank you all. It will be a spectacu-
lar show.
Invitation Postcards will be available at the
next guild meeting.
Remember to mark your calendars to attend the
January Reception. See above for the time de-
tails.

Job Descriptions
We will be asking people to select one committee of particular interest to them at the
December Meeting. We will set out slips of paper at the membership desk that you can fill
in when you arrive.
Secretary - Open
The secretary shall keep accurate records of the proceedings of all the meetings of the
members and the directors. She shall give notices required by the law and Bylaws. She
shall have general charge of the corporate seal and she shall affix the corporate seal to
any lawfully executed instruments requiring it. She shall prepare an annual report for
the activities of the Guild.
President Elect - Open
The President elect is basically the VP and supports and learns as an understudy of the
President and is responsible for the President in the case of his or her absence and as-
sists in the execution of his/her duties throughout the year. The following year they
function as the President. So this position is a two year commitment. The President's
responsibilities are that they are an ex-officio member of all committees, with the ex-
ception of any nominating committee. The President shall appoint the chairman of all the
committees. The President shall supervise the corporation's operations in general, act-
ing in accordance with the Articles of Incorporation, the Bylaws, and the Resolutions of
the Board of Directors and the Membership.
The Community Outreach Committee hosts workshops and coordinates comfort items for spe-cial groups; we provide public presentations and exhibitions which promote interest in
quilting and guild participation where we present at local elementary schools, senior
centers, fairs, Blandwood, festivals.
We organize and store donated fabrics and supplies to build kits for Project Linus quilts
so that we donate them, assemble both adults’ and children’s cancer hats, quilts and
teddy bears for Victory Junction Gang Camp, soldiers’ neck coolers and gift bags. In
2009 and 2010 we taught Girl Scouts and Brownies sewing basics culminating in a small
quilt project.
Our outreach is only limited by our energy and our interests.
For example, Cheryl Joines taught 4th graders at Colfax Elementary School to "make a
quilt" in a Social Studies Unit on Courage. From theme, to design, to color placement
and fabric selection, the children were involved. Even though she did the cutting and
machine construction, the children got supplies for hand sewing pieces. They helped de-
termine the block placement, and finished with tying the quilt on a stand in their class-
room. Cheryl says, “It was a huge project, but I used to be a teacher, was unemployed,
and loved working with the kids.”
Valerie Paterson headed up a multi-week class for beginning quilters. With the assis-
tance of other guild members, she taught several interested people about fabric selection
and supplies, using a rotary cutter, putting blocks together, making the quilt sandwich,
basting the layers, machine quilting, and finally, binding the quilt. This was offered
free and taught at JoAnn’s. Valerie says, “We had 35 people show up the first week! We
have gained some new members and some joined us for their first meeting in March.”
Make A Difference Day is a special interest sub-activity. It is not a spin-off of Commu-nity Outreach, but parallels it. See the summary of completed items in this newsletter
for an idea of the projects this committee undertakes. Planning goes on throughout the
year, culminating in a final big work day in late October.
