PRESIDENT’S CORNER

I have to spend a few minutes bragging on your great Board of Directors. This year has been such a challenge for them. How do we communicate with ourselves and all our members during COVID? What do we do about a quilt show when Harvey Hall is being torn down? How do we handle workshops on a limited budget? To Zoom or not to Zoom? How do we have meetings in masks and with social distancing when the Church opens again? How do we get officers elected and installed when we are not meeting face to face? Every month has brought them a new challenge and every time they have brain-stormed and come up with solutions. They were the first ones to step up and volunteer to offer programs and workshops when we found out we could start meeting again. This gave our newly elected 2nd VP some breathing room to plan for the future. They came up with the idea for our drive by-meetings in September and October which allowed us to elect and install our officers. This also allowed us to begin meeting again in smaller groups where we could maintain social distancing and ease back into our full group meetings. Rhonda Chapman single handedly met the challenge of what we were going to do for a Christmas party when we could not have a pot-luck buffet and most small groups were still not meeting. Now the Board is dealing with the closing of Harvey Hall and what to do when we have no location for a quilt show this year. Our quilt show chairs have come up with the idea for a mini event this year. In September we will have a Country Store Sale, Quilt Raffle and Silent Auction. The event is being advertised to other guilds and through our local quilt stores. Marilyn Hardy has come up with a really unique idea to stimulate raffle quilt sales!! You must come to her presentation at the June meeting to get the details and learn how you can participate. I am in the process of setting up a task force to begin rethinking our annual quilt show. I already have several volunteers to help out and we will begin meeting soon. The following people have served this year on the Board of Directors: Susan Webber, Maggie McGuire, Pat Graham, Cecilia Brannon, Marilyn Hardy, Jackie Ruffing, Mary Lou Douglas, Lucinda Cox/Sue Bugg, Rhonda Chapman, Margaret Cotten, Ann Hardin, Mary Ann Eckert, Claire Leifer. When you see one of these people at the meeting, please thank them for their service. It has been a difficult year and they have pulled together and come through for all of us. I am proud to have served with all of them. If you have any “out of the box” ideas, please let one of us know. We would love to hear from you. Thank you so much to Cathy Woodson, Susan Branscum, Sue Spivey, Mary Bartley and Marilyn Hardy for making up our nominations committee. The Quilters Guild of East Texas met at First Christian Church on Thursday, May 13, 2021. First V. P. Susan Webber called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m. as Susan Merrill was absent.

The April minutes were approved as distributed in the newsletter. The Financial report is posted in the lobby. If you have any questions, see Cecilia Brannon.

Marilyn Hardy conducted a vote to change our by-laws under Article 6 Section B eliminating 5 and 6. The change would eliminate term limits. Notification of this vote was given in the Minutes of the April newsletter. We must have 2/3 of those present to make a change to the by-laws. The vote was unanimous to change our by-laws.

Susan Webber, 1st V.P. in charge of The Hive, said The Hive will not meet today due to the workshop Brenda is

conducting this afternoon. The Hive will resume next month. It is always for new members and any others who

want to learn something new or hone their skills.

Maggie McGuire, 2nd V.P. in charge of Programs, has resigned due to health issues. Please contact Susan Branscum

or Cathy Woodson if you would be willing to serve as V. P. of Programs, or the Nominating Committee.

The June program will be Marilyn Hardy and Jackie Ruffing explaining the construction and quilting of the Rose Wreath Raffle Quilt. Jackie Ruffing Social Media Chairman, was absent.

Karen Walters was absent. Tana Doss filling in for Karen said if you are interested in making a cuddle quilt she has

CUDDLE QUILT NEWS

Good News! Marisa Campbell will be taking over Cuddle Quilts. I am so glad someone is able to do it and we don’t have to dissolve this group. It has been almost four years since Cuddle Quilt began. Thanks to all who have made quilts, donated money for batting, and quilted quit tops. Please continue to support Marisa as she takes on this job. We are still collecting Cuddle Quilts for giving to Fatherheart. Please continue to stop by the table at Guild

meetings and check out a kit. Kits do not include batting, but if you cannot donate batting, it can arrangement to

bring you some. We are hoping to have enough to give to Fatherheart by July. There are now 7 quilts completed

and three ready to be quilted. Keep on Quilting!

This month we will make a money/credit card holder. I made one years ago and have enjoyed it because it is compact and easy to find in my purse. It has an open pocket in the middle for a driver’s license with two flap pockets which are great for paper money and credit cards.

You have the option to stop by and take a photo of the directions, or bring your supplies, sewing machine, and fabric to make your money/credit card holder with a mentor to guide you. If you choose the second option, please contact me at [email protected] so that we can have tables set up for your use.

The supply list for the money/credit card holder in-cludes:

2 fabrics – 9” X 9” coordinating fabrics 2 pieces of hook and loop tape – any width by ½” or two dots or 2 snaps

In June the Hive will be in the CLC (2nd building) confer-ence room #5, as far as I know. If there is a change, I will let you know.

The Hive is open to any member of the Quilters’ Guild of

East Texas. New members are especially encouraged to

join in the training and fellowship. We will meet about

30 minutes after the end of the Guild meeting. Bring a

snack or pick up take out. Stay safe and healthy.

Upcoming Programs & Workshops

June Program The Making of “Rose Wreath”—Lessons Along the Way

Presented by Marilyn Hardy and Jackie Ruffing How does a quilt go from an idea, an applique concept, to a finished quilt? The June program will be presented by Marilyn Hardy (who machine appliqued the quilt top and did the edge finish) and Jackie Ruffing (who enhanced the applique design with just the right amount and the appropriate designs in the quilting.) Along the way they will share insights such as these:

• Gathering ideas for quilt designs.

• Making a pattern design your own through subtle or major alterations to the pattern

• Preventing stiffness and thickness when many layers of applique are layered on top of each other.

• Ensuring there is uniformity in the placement of repeated applique elements.

• Applying the blanket stitch to secure applique edges properly—technical tips.

• Deciding what style of quilting motif is suitable to the quilt.

• Deciding how much quilting should a quilt top have.

• Filling negative spaces appropriately and effectively.

• Planning and executing a worthy and appropriate edge finish. With Jackie and Marilyn as your “guides,” you will gain an appreciation for our raffle quilt “Rose Wreath” and pick up some practical tips and pointers for the making of a machine-appliqued quilt.

QGETX Guild Library - Library Corner

==== HOW TO GET BOOKS from your QUILT GUILD LIBRARY ====

During this time in which social distancing is encouraged, we would like to offer two methods to get books from your Quilt Guild of East Texas Library:

Email Carol Kile at [email protected] the titles you would like to check out (using the library list on the website using the instructions below). We will have them for you in the foyer of the church on meeting days. You may also return books there. Request an appointment 2 days before the meeting day to visit the library from 9:00 to 9:30 on meeting day to look at and/or check out books by calling (landline) Carol Kile, (903) 566-8331 or sending an email to [email protected]. A mask will be required while you are in the library.

=========================================================== FIND a book you want: Lists of all the books in the Library are on the Quilt Guild’s website, qgetx.org. To locate the lists, select the tab RESOURCES (between Programs and Quilt Show on the homepage heading) and then select LIBRARY. Complete instructions for finding the lists and a book are shown on that page as well as the names of the lists. One list is the Complete Inventory of Books and the others are the inventory separated by category: Applique & Embroidery, Art & Inspiration, Guides & Techniques, History of Quilting, Patchwork & Piecing, Seasonal Quilts, and Small Quilts.

WHAT is in the library: There are approximately 700 books dealing with quilt-related topics that are available for members to check out (one or more at a time). You may return them when you are finished using them – no fines are assessed.

WHERE is the Guild Library: It is located in the Christian Life Center (behind the First Christian Church

building) in Room 4 and is open from 9:00 to 9:30 am on Guild meeting days by appointment.

DONATE a book: When you are next cleaning your sewing area and you find a book you are no longer using, we will gladly accept it so that other members can enjoy it. SUGGEST a book: We are always happy to get a suggestion of a book someone is interested in so that we can try to locate it for the Library.
