Many questioned me about thename Pickers, Pedals, Pleasures,and Blunders, that it was too long &confusing. My response was ‘I amnot going to argue, I will just take youto a special place where you will besurrounded by an environment of loveand history.’

This special place is the AntiqueMarket Place in Greensboro, N.C.

The 45,000 sq ft modernbrick building is home forover 150 dealers andcollectors but has evolvedover 15 years from a smallerDowntown Elm St.Greensboro location. Thedeparture from the traditionalHistoric location to a highlyvisible location was for morefloor space and toaccommodate the owner JulieMorgan’s growing business.

So as you enter theAntique Market Place, it onlytakes a few steps beforememories pull you back intoanother era. Julie is veryparticular and very sensitiveto lasting value and quality.

The sellers and dealersrepresent most every type ofcollector, dealer, and seller.They span many styles andcenturies. The selection and

Oh, What I’d Give toOwn a Willy!

As new technology movesfaster than ever, we take forgranted many benchmarks.Historians look for works andresults where solutions overcameneeds and demands.

Over history many significantsolutions over needs anddemands were inventions createdin times of war.

Throughout history weaponsare evident in every century.Mobility and the ability to moveweapons and soldiers at greaterspeeds will always be a challenge.

Pedals Find Prior to World War II, off roadtransportation and weaponmovement was dominated bytrack drive vehicles. Rear wheeldrive only vehicles wereunreliable off road. Militaryleaders and strategist saw a needfor a light weight ‘go anywhere’vehicle.

The all round vehicle wasdesigned with help from theagriculture industry to develop asystem to transfer power. Thechallenge was for both front andr e a raxles todrive all4wheelsa n da l l o wt h ef r o n twheels to steer withoutobstructing load to each wheel.

The name Jeep was born, withcontracts going to the Willys/Kaiser company. While Willys/

K a i s e rramped upproductionon the Jeep,t h eoverwhelmingdemand forthe designwas alsocontractedout to Ford.Willys/Kaiser saw the benefit ofsmall and numbers but failed totransfer the success to the Henry

J, a 2-wheel drive carbased on the samerunning gear.

We now moveforward 70 years andfind at least one 4 X4 pickup trucks andSUV’s in most everydriveway and now

comprise a large portion of fleetsthroughout the world. The Jeepsurely has its place in history butwe can thank the now defunct

Fond Memories & Not So Fond Memories

Right after the end of WWII, Ifound myself stationed in Europeas part of the ‘peace keeping’forces left behind to assist thecontinent’s war torn countries getback up on their feet.

Of course the Army still used theWilly Jeep as its workhorse sincethese vehicles could go just about

anywhere and everywhere.I recall one particular day

where snow, sleet and freez-ing rain made for a work daythat can only be described byan infantryman in certain termsthat are not fit to be printed inthis particular publication. Butreaders should get the idea of

the language us soldiers used at thetime.

I was driving a Willy up this par-ticularly steep and rutted out moun-tain road on the side of an unforgiv-ing mountain. The man in front of memanaged to get his large truck stuckand the whole convoy was halted inits tracks.

As several men assembled to at-tempt freeing the truck from an icyrut, I heard someone behind meholler loudly, then heard a crash ofmetal.

Quickly I whipped around intime to see my Willy Jeep slidedown the mountain side into the for-est, end over end, crashing and roll-ing like a giant green pinball as itstruck tree after tree.

It wasn’t funny to me at the timesince my pay was docked consid-erably for this mishap but now I canlaugh about it with my old Armybuddies over a beer.

OK, this is like a confessioncolumn from one of our avidreaders who is a rabid turkeyhunter. His name has beenchanged to protect him from hiswife, who’s just recently gottenover his last purchase thatshowed up on their credit cardstatement.

But heaven help the poor manif she finds out his latestacquisition he just landed off ofeBay!

We’ll just call our reader Bob.My good friend is a born and

bred native Tar Heel, raised onhunting and fishing in his ownback yard of the Piedmont area.Bob says that you just go deerhunting to kill time while waitingfor spring turkey season. Heswears there’s somethingmysterious that comes over anoutdoorsman on his/her firstbrisk spring morning listening toturkeys cut and gobble. I believehim wholeheartedly.

It’s an eclectic mix of art andscience to hunt the NorthCarolina wild turkey. Theseanimals are not just your normalrun-of-the-mill stupid birds. A lotof folks would have you thinkotherwise, but hey, they’re thesame sort of folks that seem tokeep increasing the distancebetween their hands whiledescribing the ‘big fish’ that gotaway.

No, there is definitely a fineart in calling a gobbler to you.And there are so many differentkind of turkey calls - box calls,diaphragm (or bladder) calls,slate calls, gun-mounted calls,etc. Every serious hunter has justa few different calls they carryinto the woods with them. Butevery serious hunter also has anobsession.

They have an addiction thatrivals gambling and drinking.They have to have ‘that’ turkeycall they just saw on the internet.You know the type of guy. If it’ san auction listing, damn thetorpedoes when it comes towinning the object of theirdesire. It does not matter that thecurrent bid is really twice morethan what the thing is actuallyworth.

Well, our reader Bob, hasconfessed that he just put himselfin jeopardy with his old ladyagain. This past weekend Bob

bagged him a nice gobbler downin eastern NC on a buddie’s farm.After drinks and barbecue dinnerwith the boys, everyone got totalking about their newest huntingtoys.

And of course, talk turned toeveryone’s most recent turkeycall purchases. Bob hadn’t boughtanything to add to his burgeoningcollection of hunting gear in thepast several weeks and made amental note to devote an hour orso that evening to check out ifthere were any interesting turkeycalls listed on the many internetforums.

After all, he deserved to treathimself! He had just bagged abeautiful gobbler for thetaxidermist to work on later.

So that Sunday evening, Bobstarted surfin’ the ‘net. And low-n-behold, there was a beauty of acall up on eBay! He immediatelyflagged it for monitoring andmulled over his next course ofaction.

Needless to say, when a personis addicted to collecting turkeycalls, the heat of the moment atthe end of an auction can costdearly....in more ways than one.To make a long story short, Bobended up as the winning bidder ona very primitive, antique turkeycall. Not functional in the fieldbut just a really cool thing to addas a centerpiece to his massivecollection.

Only problem was that he hadto bid close to $1,200 to win theobject of his desire.

And then in Bob’s euphorichaste in banging in his last finalbid to snap it up, he forgot tochange his mailing address to hisbusiness address. Quickly hefired off another couple ofseparate emails to the sellerrequesting that his purchase beredirected to his office address,

to his home address and so sorryfor any confusion.
