Classic Tale of One Person’s
Trash is Another’s Treasure
Geek alert, here....’There’s goldin them there scrap metal heaps!’
Actually, most computer geeksalready know this fact. More oftentimes it is not the hardware itselfbut the data that is never zeroed outfrom the drives that isthe ‘gold.’ On the badside, great scavanginggrounds for ID theftersand hackers. On thegood side, greatbusiness opportunityfor people to providesecure services forcleaning off devices.
But just once in awhile, there comes tolight a story such asthis all the way out onWest Coast wheresomeone hands a thriftstore clerk a bunch ofunwanted stuff andunknowingly discardsone of the very firstApple computersmanufactured.
Ouch! It happens and it’s allbecause the vast majority of folksdon’t honestly know what theyhave in their possession.
Like the recent story we coveredfew months ago about a limited
edition diving watch bought at aGoodwill Store out West for under$7.00 and a collector purchased forseveral thousands of dollars.
Or many years ago, myrecounting of my own personal
story of passing up anodd McCoy vase at ayard sale when Ilearned the seller wasdesperate to raiseenough money to keepher electricity on. (Ieducated her on truevalue of her vase andtold her to list it oneBay).
So, there arecountless examples ofthe old adage ‘oneman’s trash is another’streasure.’

I took my dad to the mall theother day to buy some new shoes(he is 76). We decided to grab a biteat the food court.
I noticed he was watching ateenager sitting next to him.
The teenager had spiked hair inall different colors - green, red, orange, and blue.
My dad kept staring at her. Theteenager kept looking and wouldfind my dad staring every time.
When the teenager had hadenough, she sarcastically asked:
"What's the matter, old man, neverdone anything wild in your life?"
Knowing my Dad, I quicklyswallowed my food so that I wouldnot choke on his response.I knew he would have agood one!
In classic style heresponded withoutbatting an eyelid,“Got stoned onceand had sex witha parrot. I was justwondering if youmight be my kid."

Rare, early 1900’s Cinco Cigar gas lighter. Lighter is an inherited piecethat originally came from a south central Pennsylvania general store thatoperated from the turn of the century until the late 1950’s. Lighter stands5’4" high (including brass gas pipe that fits under floor). Globe is handpainted white glass that measures approx. 3.5" in diameter. All parts arepresent but in need of restoration. Globe is in excellent condition with nochips or cracks. An extremely rare item that would look fantastic if re-stored and mounted in a den or smoking room.
Vintage WWII Advertising Piecefor V-Mail. Very nice vintage adver-tisement for Wessel’s V-MailEnvo-Letters. Piece dates to 1943and is professionally mounted onacid-free board with spacers to en-sure preservation. No visible creasesor imperfections of any type. Rare 1951 Olt Duck Call Record- Signed by Olt. Very rare 1951 in-structional record by the P.S. OltCompany on the practice of call-ing Mallard ducks and “all ducks
of the puddler class”. What makesthis record so unique is that therecord jacket was signed by Phil Olthimself. Record has been in my col-lection for a number of years and hasbeen kept well cared for. Some lightscratches but nothing deep, and nochips to the disk. Jacket is in excel-lent condition. I don’t have a recordplayer but judging by it’s appearancethe record should play fine. A greatitem for call collectors or Olt callenthusiasts. Item will be packed wellbefore shipping. Asking $50 OBO+ s/h cost.

A s much as I love to go“picking” it wasn’t untilrecently I felt compelled to “pick” through my own
family’s antique trunk of photographs. This particular photographreminded me of one of the stories my grandmother would rarelyshare. One of my personal favorites being the story of my dadbeing mistaken for the LINDBERGH BABY!
According to my grandmother and my father, the two traveledtogether by train from Eastern North Carolina to Washington DCon business. My grandfather was home with complications relatedto diabetes and could not travel.
After arriving at the train station in DC they became separatedfrom each other in the crowd. Two police officers noticed my dadwas alone and saw how similar he looked to the missing son ofCharles Lindbergh. When they asked him his name, he looked upat the officers and replied “Charles!”
Lindbergh kidnappingFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The kidnapping of CharlesAugustus Lindbergh, Jr., theeldest son of aviator CharlesLindbergh and Anne MorrowLindbergh, was one of the mosthighly publicized crimes of the20th century. The 20-month-oldtoddler was abducted from hisfamily home in East Amwell,New Jersey, on the evening ofMarch 1, 1932.[2] Over twomonths later, on May 12, 1932,his body was discovered a shortdistance from the Lindberghs'home in neighboring HopewellTownship.[3]

My dad’s only memory wasthe officers were “nice & funny”and gave him candy. Grannyfound him with the police officersand thanked them for finding herson, not yet realizing the fullscope of the situation at hand.Granny never gave a lot of detailswhen recalling this particularevent, other than it was a “nui-sance” and that reclaiming her sonwas “swift”. I can only imagine!
My grandmother was born inthe 1880’s in eastern North Caro-lina, became a school teacher in aone-room schoolhouse beforemarrying my grandfather. My dadwas the youngest of four boys, andborn during the beginning of thedepression. By the time I was
born, she was in her mid-seventiesand that particular day in DC hadbecome only one of many fondmemories.
And now it’s one of mine.

My wonderful father sent me this email with a bunch of old photos but this one in par-ticular really caught my eye since its caption indicated this was a young woman workingin the late 1920’s on a Florida alligator farm. Now, that must’ve been one heckuva’ joband one of the perks was an excellent physical workout.
