Quality and Patient Safety - ResearchDeterminant factors of patient transfers from the general medical floor to the Intensive Care Unit within 24 hours of emergency department (ED) admission

Dr. Bachuwa and Dr. Rios-Beoya are leading a team of residents (Adil Karim,  Joud Jarrah and Qais Radaideh) in a quality improvement research project looking at determinant factors of patient transfer from the general medical floor to

the Intensive care unit within 24 hours of emergency department (ED) admission.  We know that placement of patients to general medical floor and then transferred to ICU during their hospital course can delay delivery of care compared to those patients admitted directly from the ED to ICU.

The study will identify the factors of this transfer, and apply a score system called Laboratory-Based Acute Physiology Score (LAPS 2) on the transferred cases as an objective variable. The ultimate goal of the study is to identify factors which could better determine patient placement following an ED visit.  The study has a comparison group that will be matched on admission date to the study group. The period of study is June 1st, 2014 until June 1st, 2016.  If you are interested in learning more about quality research projects like this contact Kay Taylor in the Hurley Research Department.

Hurley Medical Center – Visitor ManagementPlease know that Hurley Medical Center is continuing to make efforts to improve the security of the Medical Center and safety of everyone in it. All individuals entering the front door of the Medical Center are now greeted by a Service Representative. Individuals who do not have a Hurley badge or pre-approved pass are asked about the nature of their visit. If it is necessary, individuals may be referred to a Public Safety Officer for additional screening.

Hurley has implemented several different colored “passes” that are given to individuals entering the Medical Center.

A directional gate will be added near the entryway. The gate will direct visitors and guests to the front desk, while allowing those who are leaving the Medical Center access to the main entryway doors.
