Ftalic anhidride is produced by oxidation reaction between O-xylene and air. Reaction ocurrs in a PBR reactor, where it´s used V2O5

like catalyst. The operation conditions inside reactor for pressure and temperature are 3 atm and 300°C, respectively.

To achieve this conditions inside reactor, is necessary blend between o-xylene and air get pressure and pre-heat before input to reactor. Next, it´s shown the reactions involve in production process of ftalic anhydride:

CONTROL SPECIFICATIONS

A loop control is necessary to keep the temperature at 146ºC in the outlet flow of leaving of the first heat exchanger. If the temperature is lower than 144 oC, a visible alarm is generated, the o-xileno pump is shutdown

If the temperature of o-xileno in the outlet of second heat exchanger is higher than 305 oC, the steam valve is closed. If the temperature is lower than 295 oC, the steam valve is open to allow the temperature rise

The concentration of o-xylene in the mixer must remain at 33% mol. If the concentration is over 33,5% mol, a visible alarm is generated and the valve o-xylene should be locked

The pressure exerted by o-xileno in the reactor must be monitored. Is necessary to keep the pressure at 3 atm. If the pressure in the reactor is above this value, a relief valve opens to decrease

The reactor outlet temperature must be maintained between 390 º C and 400 º C. If the temperature is higher than 400 º C, Hitec valve is opened. If the temperature is below 390 º C the valve should be closed Hitec

In the distillation column is required distillate concentration is between 95% and 99% of phthalic anhydride. If the concentration is below 95%, it generates a visible alarm, opening a recirculation valve and valve blocks the distillate

Maleic anhydride is a pollutant to the environment thus it is necessary to monitor and register the concentration. A visible alarm is generated if maleic anhydride concentration is higher than 10 ppm

The distillation tower needs a continuous stream flow feeding with phthalic anhydride and maleic anhydride, for this there are two pumps in parallel, the first is always ON, and the second is ON when the first pump fails
