The Army Ideas for Innovation (AI2) program replaces the Army Suggestion Program (ASP) that was suspended in 2013. It is a venue for Army Soldiers, Army Civilians, and contractors to share innovative ideas and creative solutions that positively affect the Army through cost savings, increased productivity, and process improvement. What has the Army done? The Army Business Strategy, 2017-2021 allows for the communication of innovative ideas directly to Army senior leaders... The program is open to anyone with a common access card (CAC) and is accessible on milSuite. What continued efforts are planned for the future? Anyone with an idea about how the Army can improve the AI2 program should submit his or her idea to the program. BOOTSTRAP | B4 inside The U.S. Army Research Laboratory hosted its Program Formulation Meeting March 20-23 at the Mallette Training Facility at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, in hopes of building bridges with stakeholders and gathering feedback to influence the future of Army research. Acting ARL Director Dr. Philip Perconti briefed the nine Essential Research Areas that the laboratory must address to support the Army of 2050. This commitment is largely due to APG leadership efforts to ensure members of the Command, Control, Communications, Com- puters, Intelligence, Surveillance and Recon- naissance, or C4ISR, community of the U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Com- mand, known as CECOM, have access to those resources and solutions that effectively guard against and prohibit discrimination. The recent arrival of Installation Equal Opportunity Program Manager, Sgt. 1 st Class Anthony C. Toolin is one example of the command’s ongoing efforts to provide the talent and expertise needed to maintain a viable and effective EO program that maxi- mizes human potential and ensures fair treatment for all persons. According to Tracy Marshall, Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Preven- tion, or SHARP, program manager, Toolin will be a tremendous asset to the program. “The skills and expertise that he brings to the C4ISR community will ensure that our EO and SHARP efforts are not only up to date, but are clearly aligned with DOD policy and our Army Core Values,” said Marshall. In advance of Toolin’s arrival, Marshall was instrumental in ensuring EO services were not interrupted or impeded. “Prior to Sgt. 1 st Class Toolin’s arrival, I wore both hats, overseeing my duties as the Installation SHARP Program Manager, and that of Equal Opportunity Program Man- ager,” she said. “The challenges were there, of course. Weighing less than 4 pounds, the device attaches to Soldier’s protective vest and holds their weapon, putting less weight on their arms and freeing up their hands to do other tasks. The goal of the third arm device is to redirect all of a weapon’s weight to the body, making it easier for the Soldier to carry a more lethal firearm.     ‘Third arm’ may lessen Soldier’s burden, increase lethality

    The U.S. Army Research Laboratory isdeveloping a “third arm” passive mechan-ical appendage that could lessen Soldierburden and increase lethality. Weighingless than 4 pounds, the device attaches toSoldier’s protective vest and holds theirweapon, putting less weight on their armsand freeing up their hands to do othertasks.

    The goal of the third arm device is toredirect all of a weapon’s weight to thebody, making it easier for the Soldier tocarry a more lethal firearm.

    The passive mechanical appendage,which is made out of carbon fiber com-posite, can be used in the prone positionand on either side of the body.
