1. PHEMTAelections

LastmonthweannouncedthatthenextPHEMTAelectionwouldhappenimminently.Unfortunately,wearegoingtodelaythisuntilFebruary2017.ThereasonsforthisarethatitavoidsthefestiveperiodwhenyouandtheRCSEdwouldratherbethinkingaboutfamilyandtimeoff,andalsoavoidsthebuilduptotheexamsinmid-January.Asaresult,PHEMTAwillbewithoutaChairandwithoutarepresentativetotheFPHCExaminationsCommitteeforamonthortwo.BothmyselfandJonBirks,asthetwooutgoingmembers,willattendtherequiredmeetingsintheexamsweekandthenstepdownonFriday20thJanuary.WewillbothensurethatcontinuityismaintainedthroughtheremainingPHEMTACommitteeduringthistransitionaryperiod.TheRCSEdwillmakecontactwithyouallregardingnominationsnearerthetime.Ifyouareinterested,pleasegetintouchwithusviaouremailaddress.Theywillneedyourpostaladdressestoallowyoutovote–pleasesendthesetoIBTPHEM@RCSEd.ac.ukbeforethenominationdeadline.2. PHEM is a challenging subspecialty. It exposes you to scenes, patients and events that few medicalcolleagueseverhadtodealwithand,attimes,canbeextremelymentally,emotionallyandpsychologicallychallenging.Inaddition,PHEMtrainingcanbedifficultasexpectationsofyouandthewayinwhichyouarewatched,critiquedandprovidedwithfeedbackcandiffersignificantlyfromyourparentspecialtyaswestriveforhighstandardsofcareinverydifficultcircumstances.Wewouldliketoremindyouhowtoseekguidance,adviceandhelpshouldyouneedit.• YourEducationalSupervisorandTrainingProgrammeDirectorhavearesponsibilityforyourwellbeing

andareoftenthebestinitialpeopletocontactifyouhaveproblems.Iftheyareunabletohelp,oryouneedtoescalatethingsfurther,eachLETBhasawell-definedprocesstofollow.

• TheAmbulanceServiceyouworkinwillhaveawellbeingandpsychologicalsupportprogramme.Most

haveadoptedtheTraumaRiskManagement(TRiM)process,whichisexcellentandcanleadtoaccessofotherservicesifrequired.

• ThecharityMINDarerunningaBlueLightcampaignwhichfocusesonthementalhealthofpeoplewhowork in the emergency services. Their website has lots of advice and resourceswww.mind.org.uk/news-campaigns/campaigns/bluelight

• Finally,ifyoudon’tknowwhichoftheaboveroutestofollow,orwouldlikesomeadviceastowhich
