Robin Newell, principal of Mitchell-Neilson Schools was named the Principal of the Year Winner for the Middle Grand Division. Each year a public school principal earns the distinction as Tennessee Principal of the Year. This award is given for merit worthy service in education and outstanding leadership that causes overall improvements in their school. Nominees must have a minimum of three years' experience as a principal and a minimum of five years' experience in the Tennessee public schools. Nine finalists represented each Center of Regional Murfreesboro City Schools wants you to know that coming to school on time, every day is important. If children don't show up for school regularly, they miss out on fundamental reading and math skills. They miss the chance to build a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. Chronic absenteeism in kindergarten, and even preK, can predict lower test scores, poor attendance and retention in later grades. MCS wants to help our students stay on track and build good attendance habits. Good attendance will help children do well in high school, college and at work. Let's work together to reach our goal of making sure our students are at school on time and ready to learn! The first step is realizing that Everyday Matters. Community Outreach

Excellence (CORE) region inthe state, with three finalists ineach Grand Division, West,Middle and East. GrandDivision winners and thePrincipal of the Year wereselected from this group andannounced on Oct. 25, 2016,during the department's LEADConference.

Discovery Robotics

Discovery School placed 3rdplace Overall BEST award forthe third year in a row at theMusic City BEST RoboticsCompetition.

The team earned high marksin several areasincluding placing 1st inengineering designnotebook, Founders Award forCreative Robot Design, Best t-shirt design and TVA Award forSafety.

Preparation for the competitionrequires dozens of hours worthof work including after schooland weekend work.

American Education Week

Parent Class

The Murfreesboro City Schools OutreachDepartment begins their informative parent assemblyseries on November 14, 6 pm at DiscoverySchool. This series is open to all MCS parents andwill be held.

Part one will focus on Intensities of Gifted Children.This session is designed to help families betterunderstand the emotions of gifted children and offerstrategies to help kids cope with their feelings andpassions.

Licensed Family Therapist Robbie RobinsonHutchens will lead this session. She specializes inthe unique needs of gifted children.

Foundation GrantReception The City Schools Foundation is proud to announce$52,774.76 in grant funding has been awarded toMurfreesboro City Schools teachers for the 2016-17foundation grant cycle. 27 grants were awarded tofar-reaching and engaging grants focused in theareas of science, technology, engineering and math.

November 14-18 is AmericanEducation Week. This weekhonors and recognizes thecontributions of all individualsinvolved in making surechildren receive a qualitypublic education. The week-long celebration highlights theimportance of bringingtogether educators, parents,students, and communities ina unified effort to build greatpublic schools.

Discovery SchoolApplications Available

The Discovery School atBellwood is now acceptingapplications for the 2017-18school year. A parentinformation meeting isscheduled for Thursday,December 15 at 6 p.m. forparents interested in learningmore about the admissionprocess. Application deadlineis Friday, January 6, 2017.

Discovery School was createdto serve high achievingstudents. At Discovery School,students quickly learn thebasics and then move deeperinto the curriculum. Studentsalso enjoy enrichmentactivities and use schoolelectronics to enhance thelearning experience. Inaddition, students are offeredunique opportunities forlearning through partnershipswith MTSU and otherorganizations.

MCS receives ACE's Grant

Murfreesboro City Schools hasbeen awarded a $200,000 grantfrom the Department ofChildren's Services to addressAdverse Childhood Experiences(ACEs) such as householddysfunctions, neglect or abuse. The services funded by this grantwill promote prevention of ACEsby educating school staff,parents, and community partnersregarding childhood trauma andthe impact of ACEs on a child'sphysical and social development.

As a protective factor againstACEs, this program will enhancesocial connections within thefamily and greater community byproviding targeted and intensivesmall group intervention forstudents who are identified at-risk and then linking the studentsto available school-based andcommunity services. Likewise,parents will receive parenttraining and support and belinked with community partnersto build positive socialconnections. By promoting the prevention ofACEs and the mitigation of theimpact of adverse childhoodexperiences, the services andprograms funded by this grantwill improve academic success,improve physical and emotionalhealth, increase parent-childinteractions, and strengthensocial connections for studentswithin the Murfreesboro CitySchools and their families.

Cason Lane Beta Club Cason Lane's Junior Beta Club students are leadingthe charge towards excellence. Recently chartered,the club consists of 20 fourth and fifth grade studentswho promote the ideals of academic achievement,character, service, and leadership.

This year they will promote the school-wideexpectations of respectfulness, responsibility andreliability by participating in community serviceactivities such as helping a needy family during theholidays, raising money for children who strugglewith Leukemia and Lymphoma and helping studentswith special needs.

Academically, students meet or exceed grade levelexpectations. During the upcoming Junior Beta Clubcompetition, four Cason Lane students will becompete in the categories of Social Studies, Math,Language Arts, and Poetry.

Students will be honored during the StudentInduction Ceremony in May where they will receivecertificates and celebrate their successes.

The after school program usesrunning to celebrate girls, buildself-esteem and promotehealthy living.

Successful Socktober

Over 150 pairs of socks alongwith paper plates, silverware,paper towels were collected byCason Lane Academy duringtheir Socktober drive.

Congratulations! Scales students took home awardsat the Soils Conservation District (RCSCD) AnnualDinner and Awards. Jack Slifka - 1st place winner inthe 4th-6th gr. poster contest "We All Need Trees." Jack's poster will now go on to the state competition. Aiden Eisenga also won 3rd place in the competition.

Camp Boro News

Every student deserves a summer camp experience,however, not all camps are designed with specialcampers in mind. Camp BORO, a collaborationbetween ESP and the Department of SpecialEducation, will host it's 2nd annual camp thissummer June 5th-9th at Scales Elementary.Volunteers will be needed. Please mark this dateand contact Melissa Snyder for additional details.
