2.30 pm – 3.00pm Submit work to teacher (via folder/ Team? Seesaw?)

What will be my daily routine?

• You will all have regular breaks at the same time each day.

• Your teachers will try to follow your regular school timetable as much as possible – he/she will aim to have a

balance of different activities across the day: time for academics, rest, socialising and exercise

Before you sit down to start remote online learning, you need to think about some ‘big picture’ things:

• Where will I be doing my schoolwork? Wherever you are, whether it’s at your own home, the home of a friend

or relative or at your parent’s place of work, find a clean, well-lit and comfortable place to work. Ideally, it would

be the kitchen, living or dining room – somewhere where you might have other people around. If possible, do try

to have the one space, free from distractions, with good wireless connectivity to the internet.

• Have I got all my learning materials?

o Years K – 2

Decide as a family what device you will use. Put it in a place where it can be easily seen. Have the books, materials and stationery that your child might need to complete the tasks for the day next to them.

o Years 3 – 6

Please make sure your Surface Book is fully charged or plugged in, being careful of where your power lead is placed. Have the books, materials and stationery that you might need to complete the tasks for the day next to you.

What do I wear? Uniform Remote or At School in Phase One

As we continue with remote learning and as we begin to return to school. Students can wear either their winter uniform, summer uniform or sport uniform, whether at school or at home.

Kindergarten students are asked to wear their sport uniform as much as possible to school and to wear Velcro shoes if they cannot tie their own shoelaces.

2. Years K – 2 GETTING STARTED (9.00 - 9.30am) Here is a step-by-step plan to get going each morning:

1 . Log on to Seesaw and check your class work for the day to see what tasks have been assigned for the day.

2. Teachers will make a post each morning. Students will be required to post a comment to the teacher’s post. This

will be regarded as their attendance.

If students are unwell/ unavailable please make sure your family contacts Junior School Reception as they would normally do to explain your absence.

• Junior School 02 9009 5442 or [email protected]

If you haven’t logged on by 10.30 am and registered a response, or we haven’t heard from your family, Reception will be contacting your parent/carer to check that you’re okay.

3 . You’re now ready to start following your daily remote learning.

3. Years 3 – 6 GETTING STARTED (9.00 - 9.30am) Here is a step-by-step plan to get going each morning:

1. Log on to Schoology and check your class work for the day to see what tasks have been assigned for the

day.

2. Teachers will make a post each morning which students are required to reply to. Their response will

then be recorded by teacher through the attendance option in Schoology.

4. You’re now ready to start following your daily remote learning.

4. GETTING GOING

Kindergarten - Year 2

You will be assigned English and Mathematics lessons each day and some other specialist lessons such as Music Art, Drama, CD, PE, etc. Your Specialist Lessons may occur on different days to what they currently occur, but you should expect to get lessons from all Specialists each week.

Years 3 – 6

You will be assigned English and Mathematics lessons each day and some other specialist lessons such as Music Art, Drama, CD, PE, etc. Your Specialist Lessons may occur on different days to what they currently occur, but you should expect to get lessons from all Specialists each week.

At times, your teachers will be assigning and checking work on the OneNote platform and providing feedback as appropriate. Some students are already familiar with OneNote, but if you have any problems, you should email your teacher and look out for ‘how to’ guides that are being created and posted on the How to Tech @ SACS tile on Student Portal.

Teachers may also use the Schoology platform to write or talk to individuals or groups of students. This app works like Skype and allows students to interact with their teacher via text, audio- or video call.

Should a staff member fall ill, this information will be included on the day’s Schoology notices and students will then know not to expect to hear from their teacher on that day. A Casual Teacher will be able to provide some continuance of lessons where possible.

If students are not completing work, handing in assessment or joining lessons when required, parents will be informed by email or phone call.

Rules for Remote Chats and Video Conferencing

Everything you do online in any of the SACS learning spaces (email, Seesaw, Schoology, OneNote) is

recorded, even if you delete it. AI bots look at what is being written and alert us for cyber-bullying or

inappropriate material. Schoology provides a way for you to interact with your teacher(s) and other

students, and such interactions should be of a similar tone to what takes place in physical classrooms and

the school.

• Interactions on Schoology/ Email /Seesaw / OneNote with teachers should only relate to

schoolwork and school matters.

• Students are not to be using phones during normal class times.

• Students using Schoology inappropriately will face a range of consequences as per normal school

rules

• Follow the Netiquette Guide at the end of this document.

5. GETTING HELP If you are experiencing difficulties understanding what you are meant to do in a lesson/task/subject, what do

you do? In the first instance, email your class/ specialist teacher and ask for help. When putting together your

email, please consider the following:

• Always start with a ‘Dear (Teacher’s title and surname)’ and finish with ‘Kind regards, (your first name);

• Take your time and choose your words carefully. Remember that your teachers are likely to be receiving

many emails a day and can’t respond as quickly as they might do when you’re face to face with them in

a classroom;

• Try to avoid sending a separate email for every question to a teacher. Take your time and do your best

to work out your own solution first, but if you’re still confused, collect all your questions into one email,

perhaps using a separate bullet point for each (see sample below).

If you usually receive Specialised Learning Support, the relevant Support staff have been linked into all your

Schoology subjects and you can also email them to ask for help.

If there is a technical problem with your computer, Schoology or any of the other platforms, please email

[email protected] or email Mr Tim Ryman [email protected]

If you need to access help regarding any pastoral, co-curricular, sporting, counselling services matter, or any other aspect of your learning, do not hesitate to email the relevant staff member(s). We are all online and only a phone call or video link up away.

Unless advised otherwise, School Receptions will be open and able to answer or redirect any of your family’s queries. Please phone 9286 9500 or email: [email protected] or [email protected]

Dear Mr Jones,

I’ve tried to do my Science work for this week (Wednesday), and I’m confused about what question 2 is

asking me to do. Can you please tell me:

• Do I need to write a whole paragraph, or will a sentence do?

• Can you suggest any other videos for me to watch so I can understand this better?

Kind regards,

Terry

Our current Phase Plan commences with our students returning in a staggered approach.

Phase One K - 6 would return for one day a week

Phase Two Years 1 – 6 two full days a week Kindergarten four half days a week, to maximise morning Literacy and Numeracy Learning

Phase Three K – 6 return five days a week with continued restrictions around excursions and events

We have yet to decide how quickly we will move through these phases, this is dependent on Government and Health advice and may be revised as more restrictions are lifted. Students will be rostered to set days, with remote learning to continue the other days of the week.

Phase 0 – Term 2 Week 1-2 – full remote learning

Phase 0 is continuation of full-time remote learning under our existing timetable and remote learning procedures introduced at the end of Term 1.

Phase 1 – Term 2 Week 3+ - students return 1 day/week

Phase 1 sees K – 6 return to school from Monday May 11 for onsite lessons 1 day per week on the following days:

Phase 1 Phase 1 will operate on a shortened day. We appreciate that any way we roster this staggered return will have implications for all. This model allows us to separate students and utilise the spaces effectively. We see that it allows students to be back with their teacher and with their friends on the days they return, rather than rostering them alphabetically or by Houses, where they would not be with their class nor necessarily with their teacher. Remember, the School is open every day regardless of the rostered days, if you require your child to be at school, as you are an essential worker, or your child is struggling with the remote learning experience, please send them in. We will have staff here to supervise and support them. If you need to send a sibling in, we can also support them at school.

At School Arrival Times

9am Arrive at 9am for lessons commencing at 9.30am

2.30pm Finish Time at 2.30pm

Canteen The Canteen will be open every day, however it will be cashless, please order online or purchases will be billed to the school account.

Kiss and Drop

We expect many more students will be driven in to school than normal, as more will wish to travel out of peak hours, including our teachers, who have been identified as more at risk than children. As a result, we are shortening the day to allow families to miss the drop off and pick up times of the Secondary School. Students will be asked to arrive at a bit later and leave a bit earlier. Drop Off: We are appealing for parents to remain in their car and staff will help students out of the car and into the school. Parents are not permitted to go in to the school while in Phase One. If there are no spots available please drive into Wilson’s Car Park and park and bring your child to the front doors, you always have 30 minutes free parking. At Pick Up in the afternoon, the staff will supervise your child to be picked up. We are asking for parents to use Wilson Carpark if there are no spaces at Kiss and Drop. We are appealing for parents not to queue across the intersection, not to sit at Kiss and Drop for more than 2 minutes if their child is not yet ready, please go around the block.

Uniform

As we continue with remote learning and as we begin to return to school, we are relaxing the uniform requirements. Students can wear either their winter uniform, summer uniform or sport uniform. This is in response to the fact that many families have not been able to access the Uniform Store. They can wear any of these uniforms whether at home or at school.

Kindergarten students are asked to wear their sport uniform as much as possible and to wear Velcro shoes if they cannot tie their own shoelaces.

Social Distancing Measures

The staggered approach will facilitate spacing in our school. The Secondary School students will start earlier than the Junior School and will end after the Junior School to avoid gathering of students in stairs and corridors.

Page 9: Phase 0 - SACS Connect - SACS Connectsacsconnect.sacs.nsw.edu.au/images/2/20/Term_2_SACS_Remote_Lear… · 9 At Home Remote Learning Timetable 9.15am Begin to set up and log on to

9

The stairwells will become one directional, (Western Stairwell Up and Eastern Stairwell Down). There will be limited numbers in the lifts, Secondary School students will not utilise the lifts.

Cleaning of Touch Points

Cleaning of desks and touch points will continue regularly each day. The playground equipment will be cleaned prior to Morning Tea and Lunch play times. Numbers will be limited in spaces. All bubblers will be shut down, students to bring their own bottles of water.

Other Implications

Parent and visitor access

Parent lanyards are not accepted at this stage. All school visitors are by appointment only and will need to sign a declaration of health and that they have not visited an overseas country in the last 14 days.

On site and remote teaching

Students will be expected to attend school on their allocated day, only minimal remote learning activities will be offered by the class teacher to those who do not attend. On the other days, remote learning will continue as normal but with a commencement time of 9.15am.

Parent Teacher Day 22 May

Friday 22 May – These will be conducted as 15 minutes phone interviews using Shortel through your computer. Debbie Banks will send out a booking sheet with protocols this week. (suggesting at least one parent conference before the day)

Stairway traffic Stairs will have signage to indicate one-way traffic direction (ie some stairs will be only for going up and some for going down).

Stairwells will be one direction only; the Western Stairwell is UP and the Eastern Stairwell is DOWN. Students to leave 2 steps vacant between themselves and the person in front.

Stairwells for Years 3 – 6 in the afternoon.

Uniform Students can wear winter or summer uniform to school, Full uniform or Sport Uniform

Kindergarten Kindergarten are encouraged to wear Velcro shoes if they cannot tie their own shoelaces.

Lifts Lifts will have maximum carrying capacities to ensure social distancing. Students to come up between 9 am and 9.30am and Infants down from 2.30pm.

Bubblers banned Bubblers will be turned off and students encouraged to bring own water bottles.

Peripatetic Music Individual music tuition will not occur on site when students are at SACS from Week 3. Students will only undertake remote music tuition with music tutors when they are at home. This may change if on site days increase for students in the future, and notice will be given at this time.

Offsite Sport Offsite Sport will not occur.

Students with health concerns

The National COVID-19 helpline is suggesting that anyone with cold or flu symptoms should stay at home until they’ve recovered. This includes sore throat, fever above 38, shortness of breath, cough, difficulties breathing and tiredness. The student may have a common cold or virus, but it’s unclear unless confirmed by their GP or tested. Students displaying any of these symptoms to be sent home immediately.

Reports School Semester One Reports will be rescheduled to be released early Term Three. This is to allow the teachers to complete authentic assessments when the students return to schooling.

Teachers will communicate with your child (3 –6) or with you (K-2) and provide learning activities for your child

to do at home, using our Learning Management System, Schoology or Seesaw as our main online platform. For

families, please note that normal communication methods such as the School website, newsletters, weekly

digest, emails and other online tools like Parent Portal will also continue to be used.

Parents are encouraged to:

• Establish routines and expectations;

• Define a space for your child to work in;

• Monitor communications from teachers;

• Encourage physical activity and/or exercise;

• Check in with your child/children throughout the day and remember that your child’s teacher and others will be available to help;

• Keep your children connected, whilst practising ‘social distancing’; however, reinforce your rules around their social media interactions.

Attendance recording

Please read the ‘Getting Started’ section of the student guide above. It is vital that students and parents approach on-line school attendance just as they would when we are operating on site. This process will allow us to stay connected as a community and ensure that we have several processes to keep track of how students and families are going.

Student responsibilities

Student responsibilities are age appropriate and adjusted accordingly. For example, what we would expect of a Year 3-6 students in terms of independent work, time management and organisation is very different to that of students in Kindergarten to Year 2.

Students should make steady progress in their online learning environment if they adhere to these suggested guidelines.

Students should: • Establish and/or follow a daily routine for learning; • Identify a safe, comfortable, quiet space in their home where they can work effectively and successfully; • Monitor our digital platform, Schoology, and communicate via School email to check for information

and feedback from teachers; • Complete tasks with integrity and academic honesty, doing their best work; • Do their best to meet timelines, commitments, and due dates; • Communicate proactively with their teachers if they cannot meet deadlines or require additional

support.

Organising an appropriate learning environment

Page 11: Phase 0 - SACS Connect - SACS Connectsacsconnect.sacs.nsw.edu.au/images/2/20/Term_2_SACS_Remote_Lear… · 9 At Home Remote Learning Timetable 9.15am Begin to set up and log on to

9

Try to create a quiet and comfortable learning space that is conducive to this mode of learning. Your child may have a regular place for doing homework under normal circumstances, but this space may not be suitable for working in for an extended period.

A space/location for extended learning should be a public/family space, not in a bedroom, if possible. It should be a place that can be quiet at times and have a strong wireless internet signal. Please be aware of charging cables that could be a trip hazard.

Page 12: Phase 0 - SACS Connect - SACS Connectsacsconnect.sacs.nsw.edu.au/images/2/20/Term_2_SACS_Remote_Lear… · 9 At Home Remote Learning Timetable 9.15am Begin to set up and log on to

Student Wellbeing

Parents are urged to be mindful that being confined to home for a long time can cause stress and conflict for any of us. Our students place great emphasis on their interactions with their peers and will be impacted by ‘social distancing’.

Some suggestions for looking after your children during this period may include:

• Take the opportunity to talk to each member of the family about what is happening. Understanding the situation will most likely reduce their anxiety and allow them to be critical consumers of the information surrounding the current health crisis.

• Help your children to consider how they have coped with difficult situations in the past and reassuring them that they will manage with this situation too. Reassure them that reduced peer to peer contact will not be permanent. Suggest they take a break from following regular news updates as overthinking this situation will not be helpful for them in the long run.

• Remind your child to exercise regularly. Options could include dancing, yoga, jumping on a trampoline or using home exercise equipment, if you have it. Exercise is a proven way of managing stress, low mood and depression.

• Encourage your children to keep in touch with family members and friends via telephone, email or social media (where appropriate), Facetime.

Parent monitoring

We encourage you to start and finish each day with a simple check-in. These check-ins should be a regular part of each day and start straight away. Not all students initially respond positively to an online learning environment; some struggle with too much independence or lack of structure and the check-ins help keep them on track. Please refer to the sample daily timetable at the bottom of this document as a guide.

In the morning, you could ask:

• What are you learning today? • What are your learning objectives or goals? • How will you be spending your time? • What resources do you require? • What support do you need?

In the afternoon, you could ask:

• What did you learn today? • Identify one thing that was difficult. Either let it go or come up with a strategy to deal with the same

problem if it comes up again. • Consider three things that went well today. Why were they good? • Are you okay? Do you need to ask your teacher for something? Do you need help with something to

make tomorrow more successful? • Can I help you upload work or photos of work to submit to your teacher?

These specific questions are relevant because they allow your child to process the instructions they have received from their teachers and help them organise themselves and set priorities.

Teacher communication

Teachers may be communicating with your child during this period using video or audio chat applications such as Schoology, Seesaw and School email.

Teachers may have set times where students can chat with them online and stream teacher-generated instructional video lessons. These pre-arranged sessions will be clearly communicated by the teacher in the morning session.

It is important for you and your child to remember that teachers will be available to offer support and guidance during school hours (9.30am-3.00pm).

Page 13: Phase 0 - SACS Connect - SACS Connectsacsconnect.sacs.nsw.edu.au/images/2/20/Term_2_SACS_Remote_Lear… · 9 At Home Remote Learning Timetable 9.15am Begin to set up and log on to

9

Please encourage your child to, where able, collect all their questions into one email for a particular teacher, rather than sending a separate email for each question. Sending multiple questions for multiple subjects to the one teacher should also be avoided.

Managing Screen Time

Screen time refers to the amount of time a user spends on a device to access on-screen activities. There are limits as to the amount of time everyone should spend online, but the amounts and the rules for screen time vary by age. Video conferencing and social interactions using video do not count towards screen time. Suggested screen times (excluding video conferencing) are based on the recommendations from the Australian Parents Council and the Australian Government who recommend that 5-17 year old’s non-school screen time (games, social media, etc) should be less than 2 hours per day.

Students can very easily find themselves completely immersed in some screen time activities such as online socialising and gaming which can negatively impact their ability to negotiate their online learning.

Digital Citizenship and Online Safety

Students at SACS are well versed in digital citizenship and online safety. It is important that our students maintain safe and responsible use of information and communication technologies whilst participating in their online learning environment. This includes appropriate use of digital platforms, privacy and information protection, respectful communication and how to deal with online issues.

Your Support

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school directly by phone or email rather than discussing on social media or message groups. Please avoid assessing teacher work presentations or comparing teacher materials for different classes/students. We are all trying our best in unusual circumstances.

We’re All Unique

Finally, we readily acknowledge that every family group is unique and operates on structures and routines that best suit their work life and personal commitments. The above is intended as a guide to support you and we understand that you may need to massage the basic structure of the ‘School’ day to meet the needs of your family. All our staff wish you and your family the very best over the coming period of uncertainty and look forward to working alongside you to retain a sense of ‘normalcy’ in very abnormal circumstances.

As your teacher I promise to…

Check my emails daily during the school week.

Respond to course related questions during the week the task is given. If questions are pertinent to the whole class, I will share with the whole class (anonymously if requested)

Post announcements and reminders by 8.30am once per week or more frequently as needed

Give feedback on any submitted work

Conduct at least one live video conference and recorded session per week during school hours. Staff dress code, no eating/drinking.

As a learner I promise to…

Check my emails and updates by 8.30am daily during the school week.

Complete all tasks set within the given time frame

Work collaboratively if requested to do so

Ask questions and seek clarification when necessary

Attend any scheduled live video conference classes during school time and provide reasons if unable to. School/PE uniform, no eating/drinking.

Online Communication Netiquette

Remember you are talking to your classmates – they are human and have

feelings.

Do not write in all uppercase. ALL CAPS MEANS YOU ARE SHOUTING although you may not mean it.

Don’t be on your phone during class video conferences. Give the class and teacher your full attention.

Behave online as you would to a person face to face: respectful and courteous.

Check before you post. Always check whether a similar question to yours has been posted and answered on the discussion board to avoid duplication.

Use emoticons , etc to indicate tone of voice. It can be hard to tell emotion in a text based message. Emojis give your message a

social touch.
