MINUTES OF THE BOARD OF STUDIES 2018-2019

The board of studies meeting was held on 07.04.2018 at 2.00 p.m in the Department of

Biotechnology & Bioinformatics to discuss the changes in the M.Sc., M.Phil., and PGDBI

syllabi.

The meeting commenced with a small prayer and the meeting was called to order by the

chairperson in the presence of the panel experts.

The experts present for Biotechnology were:

1) Dr. T. Sivasudha, Associate Professor, Department of Environmental Biotechnology,

Bharathidasan University, Trichy.

2) Dr. R. Illangovan, Assistant Professor, Department of Endocrinology, Dr. ALM PG

IBMS, Chennai

3) Dr. P. Kanagaraj, Assistant Professor, Department of Biotechnology, SRM Institute of

Science and Technology, Chennai

The experts present for Bioinformatics were:

1) Dr. S. Parthasarathy, Professor & Head, Department of Bioinformatics, Bharathidasan

University, Trichy.

2) Dr. Girinath Pillai, Director and CEO, Zastra Innovations, Bangalore

The experts made a number of suggestions during the course of the meeting.

Agenda:

1. Summer Internship is made mandatory at the end of second semester as extra credit with

6 credits.

2. Stem Cell Biology is included along with Developmental Biology Course as Major Core

09 in Semester II.

3. Animal Biotechnology and Plant Biotechnology course are combined as one course as

Major Core 12 in Semester III.

4. Human Physiology and Endocrinology Course is included as Major Core 13 in Semester

III.

5. Additions and Modifications are made in Practical courses.

Purpose of revision.

1. The syllabi were revised in order to update the content on the basis of recent discoveries

and application in Biotechnology.

2. The course was updated and revised based on the students need in focus towards

employability, skill development and prepare them to appear for competitive exams.

Suggestion & Revisions:

The newly updated M.Sc., Biotechnology and M.Sc Bioinformatics syllabus with few revisions

in Major core 7,8,12,13 courses was presented in the board for review and suggestions.

The following were the revisions made

B.Sc., Biotechnology

A New program- B.Sc., Biotechnology was introduced and the course pattern and syllabi was

accepted by the board members and passed the course pattern of B.Sc., Biotechnology Program

with a detailed syllabus for Semester I & II. The following are the new courses introduced for the

first and 2nd semester.

Cell Biology

Practical I – Cell biology

Chemistry for Biology

Plant science and phytochemical techniques

Allied optional II- Chemistry for Biology Practical

Allied optional II - Plant science and phytochemical techniques

Biochemistry

Biological Techniques

Practical II-Biochemistry and biological techniques

Bioinformatics

Biostatistics & SPSS (Theory cum lab)

MSc., and M.Phil Biotechnology

Based on the discussion and feedback, the board accepted the syllabi of M.Sc., Biotechnology

and M. Phil Biotechnology with minor inclusions and deletions of subtopics.

M.Sc., Bioinformatics and PGDBI

Summer Internships was introduced and made mandatory during the second semester as extra

credits.

The following courses was revised with few textual changes and addition of subtopics

Major Core 7: Statistics and Mathematics for Bioinformatics

Major elective 2: Molecular Interactions and Biophysics

Non Major Elective 1: Biostatistics and SPSS Training

Major Core 12: Systems Biology

Major core 15: Molecular modelling and computer aided drug designing courses in the

IInd and IIIrd semester.

The Head of the Department announced that the M.Sc., M.Phil and PGDBI syllabus will

be revised in 2019-20.
