The Anahuac ISD Board of Trustees recognized students

February 11 who were involved with University Inter-

scholastic League competition.

Students competed in December on elementary and middle

school levels with many placing in the top three in their cate-

gory. (The students who attended the board meeting are

shown on Page 4.)

After moving from the Auditorium to the Administration

Building, the board continued its monthly meeting.

Superintendent James Hopper presented plans for the Dis-

ciplinary Alternative Education Program. Due to changes in

the DAEP consortium in Liberty, Supt. Hopper proposed

housing and teaching the students within the district, begin-

ning next school year.

He outlined the costs involved in conducting the program

in-house, utilizing existing teachers, if possible.

In other business, Supt. Hopper proposed that the district

add the position of Curriculum Director. He added that the

district currently uses C-Scope as its curriculum program, but

he felt the district would be better served in creating a curricu-

lum specific to the district needs.

He said that the curriculum developed would be in accord-

ance with the Texas Essential of Knowledge and Skills

(TEKS) requirements and that teachers would be actively

involved.

The board wanted to know more about how the position

would impact the budget before approving, and will consider

the position again in March.

The board approved the newly-developed Values, Mission

and Vision statements. The statements are the result of sev-

eral discussions with staff members in previous months on

what AISD stands for.

“Everything we do has to square with these three items,”

said Supt. Hopper. (The statements are shown on Page 4).

The board received oral reports regarding the district’s

technology operations.

Director of Instructional Technology Lorraine Lambert gave

on overview of the computer programs she has either intro-

duced or maintained in her first school year with the district,

as well as various training sessions she has given to staff

members.

Areas in which she plans to develop include the libraries,

online staff development and student technology camps.

Technology Director Kenneth Dean gave an overview of

the nuts and bolts of the district’s technology system.

He added that he was able to stabilize the district’s servers,

but that a back-up server was needed.

He added that 25 percent of the computer work stations

need additional memory, at a cost of $25 to $35 per comput-

er.

Mr. Dean said the district recently received 23 used com-

puters, in good shape, to replace some of the seven and eight

year-old computers.

Board President Ben Beaoui spoke of efforts in the past to

keep up with technology demands and expressed his support

for continued development within the district.

The board approved revisions to the current school calen-

dar made necessary after school was cancelled recently due

to bad weather. The days of February 17 And March 17, pre-

viously designated as student holiday/teacher staff develop-

ment days, are now designated as instructional days. (The

revised calendar is shown on Page 6.)

The board approved a waiver to be submitted to the Texas

Education Agency that would waive the third bad weather day

to allow AISD to take Memorial Day as a holiday.

The board also approved a resolution that stated in part

that AISD employees would not be docked for their days off

during the bad weather school closures and that absences

would be excused.

Mr. Hopper presented the new high school graduation re-

quirements, as set forth by the state. He also stressed that

parents and students would be thoroughly informed of the

changes.

After a closed session, administrative contracts were ap-

proved, as presented.

The AMS Mad Science class pitted boys against the girls to gain a better understanding of Newton's 2nd Law.

“While the boys caused the vehicle to have a greater acceleration by ap-plying the greater force, the girls com-plained less about the cold tempera-ture outside,” said teacher Juli Wil-kins.

The Anahuac High School Goddard level rocket class recently visited Baytown Ace Industrial. The group toured the machine, welding, computer numerical control, and water jet cutting shops.

The students were able to see the pro-

cesses involved with prototyping and fabrica-tion.

The Goddard students presented their

rocket profile and design to the Management of Baytown Ace Industrial.

Baytown Ace will be supporting the group

with machining time and technical advise-ment.
