We assured them that we were still in existence. We are now mailing them a copy of "The Petrograph" each month, and they are sending us a copy of their monthly publication, uTme fFossici:ker". You might be interested that ri@ht there on the cover it states "Sister Club - Mineral and Gem Society of Castro.~Alley U.S.A." Theirs is a large club and they have many activities, field trips; ~ompetitison; classes in silver, lapidary, and carving, etc. Pick up "The FossicKer" and read it. You will be amazed at what they are doing. For one of their· monthly meetings, they listed Speaker, Sir Ben Dicksoh, Former Director of Mines and currently Mining Company Director. Subject: Reflections on changles in the Mining Industry. Competition: Mineral: MInerals of the Orthorambic SY$tem as per !)ana's 18th Edition. Lapidary: A Cabochon, any shape any material, but not agate. Can you imagine us having a monthly meeting like that with prominemt speaker and competition in both minerals and lapidary! We could learn from them.

Starting July 11th, Bill Huberich and <1 will start an ELEMENTARY Rock Identification class. The~irst class is . filled but there is a sign-up sheet at the shop for our next class.

Kathryn Cotsopoulos would like to start a group in sculpturing. If you are interested, please contact her.

If you would like to do Channel Jewelry, the Knaggs of Jadok would be interested in coming to our area and teaching it. You may remember Jack and Dorothy, they were at our Show and do other shows in the area. The class runs five four-hour sessions all in one week, from Monday through Friday. The class is limited to eight with a minimum of six and they would like to teach one day class and one evening class. The cost is $110.00, including. material. There is a sign up sheet at the shop if you are interested, or you may call me at 538-6254 evenings. We would like to have a lass in July and/or November.

In September, a member of our Society, Moe Weavil, will start a class in Mosaic jewelry. The difference between this class and the Knaggs' is that Moe fills his channels with epoxy and stone chips. I have seen some of his work and it is really neat.

If you have a special interest in our hobby that you would like to learn more about, or if you would like to teach a class, please give me a call. I think we have a lot of interesting things happening at our Society Shop all summer. Why not grab a rock and come on down! It sure beats TV reruns.

1'1 BOY! DID WE GO TO THE FAIR!!!

If you didn't get to the Alameda County Fair, you really missed something.

The Fair had asked us to participate, and we did.

Bill Walsh took a first prize for cabochons, Phil Clarke a second and Allen and Billie. Ashley a third.

The Society mixed case took a First prize, and the Society mineral case took a ·second. :

We also were represented by a Square Wire case and Arnold Barron put in a case of flats.

John Gullak was demonstrating faceting.

Tony Geraci had his shop set up there, too.

You know our quilts at the Country Store are always exceptionally beautiful, but the next one will be a Blue Ribbon winner! Billie Ashley submitted the quilt she made for our 19B5 show and took first place.

Charlene Barron (Arnold's wife) took a first place for her needlepoint.

It was nice to see the Gems and Minerals building really be just that!

SUNSHINE REPORT

Stella Raymond had a very unusual birthday present this year! Her son and daughter-in-law presented her with twins! One of each. How will they ever top that!

Richard Bush is feeling better and hopes to be at the Shop soon.

Cathy Pasquini had another great big baby boy.

Frank Bettencourt is having or has had another by-pass surgery.

Oliver Martin is in Laurel Grove hospital. Just as. he was getting ready to come home he had a ~roke and now is in a coma. '

We lost Betty Callow June 7th. Our deepest sympathy to Ed.

Viola Groves is doing well after her eye surgery. She sends a big Thank You for the 8ards, phone calls and good wi$hes during her recent surgery.

Bob & Stella Raymond's son Steve recently returned from Australia where

he met some of Sidney's rockhounds. They sent home some samples of their opal, boulder opal and chrysoprase. They sound like very friendly people.

Jim McGinnis just returned from an extensive rockhounding vacation thru severai states.

From the sizes of the geodes the shop has been sawing (and the beauty) it looks like it was a very successful trip.

****************************************

Max Uland has been missing from the shop lately due to his other interest, shooting. You should see the beautiful powder horns he has made out of buffalo horns. What a lot of work went into those!

**************************************

Jim Bishop/Jack DeVoe's silvermithing class (the first one) was so successful some of their students have started showing up on Tuesday nights to practice what they have learned.

There is certainly no reason for anyone in this Society to be bored this summer! Have you seen this list of classes available? Arnold Barron is sure a go getter when it comes to getting things started.
