Let's start with the top finishers. First across the line with the outstanding time of 17:16 was Cindy Mirono- vitch (the former Cindy Wuss). For those of you who wish to save the computation time, that's a tad over 5:34 per. and certainly one of the finest efforts in the history of our club. M^;sident'S ORNEROne of the stated purposes for the founding of TRRC

was to ensure a schedule of events that would satisfya wide range of running/fitness enthusiasts. At thattime it was a rather simple process. Local races didnot draw large crowds and the objective of any race organizer was to break even.

However, as the running boom exploded fund raiserssaw what they viewed as a way to raise money. In camethe professional promoters and up went the entry fees.Where were these early fees going? In one instance theSuburban Road Runners Club promoted a race to benefitPROJECT HUNGER (complete with posters of an emaciatedchild holding up an empty bowl). An inquiry to theHUNGER PROJECT revealed that all entry fees went toSuburban. Not one cent was turned over to the charity.

^0 view a role of TRRC in this area to be one of aconsumer advocate. The TRRC has tried to be involvedwith events in which we feel the runner is well served(Reasonable rates and a good deal for your money),withthe hope that the consumer/runner will comparison shopand therefore the fast buck promoters will be chasedo u t o f o u r s p o r t .

Apparently runners are becoming better consumers. Arecent event held in FDR State Park, and sanctioned bythe same Suburban Road Runners Club, had no less than 4sponsors, a $6 post entry, and no t-shirts. A rathersparse crowd attended. Out of approximately 800 TRRCmembers, only three chose to participate. The messagem u s t b e g e t t i n g a c r o s s .

  • ROAD RE LAYAs this issue of Taconic Running Life comes alive, selection of teams

for the road relay is in the wind. Anticipation and conjecture abound inthe minds of several aspirants. Certainly it is not restricted to Taconicas others from competing teams have voiced their impatience.

The idea of this road relay, whi le innovat ive to the area, is not entirely unique, being modeled after those run in Britain. In fact the onewhich I am most familiar with - Edinburgh to Glasgow - along with severalothers run throughout England, acted as qualifiers for the "biggie," London to Brighton. For the past forty years they have been sponsored by TheN'Aws of the World, a leading Sunday newspaper, which is unusual when oneconsiders that it is only recently sponsorship of races has become vogue.

As a teenager - just a "few" short years ago - the road relay was oneevent I never missed, despite having to rise at the despicable hour of foura.m. to make the long trek to Scotland's capital. I didn't even have thehonor of running, I was just along as a spectator. But such was the magnetism of the event. I was not alone. Club champions, nat ional and worldrecord holders would not miss the oppor tuni ty to compete. Indeed, 5,000meter champion Dave Moorcroft has listed one of his runs in the road relaya s t h e h i g h l i g h t o f h i s c a r e e r .

    T r a d i t i o n o f t h e r a c e h a s b e e n f o r t h e m a y o r o f t h e s t a r t i n g c i t y t open a note to the mayor of the finishing city. Placed inside a baton, thenote is ceremoniously presented to the leadoff runner of the previous winning team, and transported through the route by the lead runner. (Usuallyofficials have to transport it up front during or at the end of the firstleg.) Mayor Koch has gratuitiously consented to scribe the deed which, inturn, will be presented to Putnam County Executive, Dave Bruen, during ourp o s t r a c e a w a r d s d i n n e r.

    As the race develops, CB radio crews will transmit team positions andf o u r s e t s o f o f fi c i a l s ( f o u r i n e a c h c r e w ) w i l l b e o n h a n d t o r e c o r d t i m e sof ind iv idua ls dur ing each leg. Awards are set fo r the firs t th ree teams,plus an additional award to the team considered to have turned in the mostmeri tor ious performance. Ladies compet i t ion wi l l have awards to the topt w o t e a m s .

But the race is for more than three top spots. Al l teams wi l l v ie forthe top ten s lots, as such a finish wi l l assure an invi tat ion to competein next year's race. The remainder will be filled up on a selection basiswith prior i ty being given to those teams who were rejected this year.

    There is no doubt the road relay is headed for elite status; there wasnever any pretense from day one it would be otherwise. The unavailabiltyo f a d d i t i o n a l t e e s h i r t s a n d a w a r d s - d i n n e r t i c k e t s w i l l a s s u r e d l y a s s i s t

Judy Pickert (18:25) and Lori Jorgensen (18:26), still inunder six minutes per mile! Judy modestly pointed outLori was coming off several marathons during the past sixmonths and probably would have done even better had it nolbeen for that fac t . Amazing! A lso amazing is the fac tJudy had to run more than a full minute faster than lastyear just to gain one place this year. Talk about a loado f q u a l i t y .

Noteworthy performances were prominent on this day. With sunny skies and race time temperature in the low tomid 50s, Margaret Deckert, now 50 (although still looking20 years younger), not only won her age group handily, butturned in a20:ll, good for fourteenth overall. Alan Kleinsasser, Westchester-Puma, and our own Peg Mimno grabbed tophonors in White Rock's One Mile Road Race held April 29, on Washington St.,Peekskill, and sponsored by White Rock and Bertolini bt Sons.

Kleinsasser flew to a 4:17 clocking and had things pretty much undercontrol beating out teammate Bob Sandstrum, 4:25, and Roy Arnesen, who ran

4:26. Peg and Nancy Laun-Perez had a wee bit of a batt le. In the end i twas Peg by four seconds - 5:29 to 5:33. Judy Pickert won the 40-44 battlehandi ly, turn ing in the th i rd fastest overa l l women's t ime of 5 :34.

Despite an abundance of races that particular weekend, Don Ettinger'sevent drew almost four hundred runners with nothing but positive reactionfrom all who took part. Look for better things in years to come.
