STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE
Date of Issued: 15th January 2006
GUIDE TO THE SAFE USE OF AGROCHEMICALS PETUNJUK PENGGUNAAN BAHAN KIMIA PERTANIAN YANG AMAN
GUIDE TO SAFE USE OF PESTICIDES 1. Toxicity 2. Storage safety precautions 3. Solution precaution and application 4. First aid 5. Protective clothing
Note: Pesticide = herbicide, insecticide, fungicide etc
1. TOXICITY 1.1. In descriptions of pesticides, their potential
toxicity hazard to spray operators is indicating by their toxicity to rats.
This toxicity hazard is normally recorded in terms of acute oral and normal LD50 values. LD50 is the dosage in milligrams of test substance per kilogram body weight which on administration in a single dose to a group of animals will be lethal to 50% of the group.
1.2. The following toxicity ratings in terms of
LD50 values may be used as reference standards:
Oral LD50 Toxicity Rating 15000 Very low
CARA PENGGUNAAN PESTISIDA YANG AMAN 1. Tingkat keracunan 2. Penyimpanan yang aman untuk tindakan
pencegahan 3. Pencampuran (pembuatan) larutan dan
penyemprotan (aplikasi) 4. Pertolongan Pertama 5. Baju pelindung Catatan: Pestisida = herbisida, insektisida, fungisida, dll 1.TINGKAT KERACUNAN 1.1.
1.2. Urutan tingkat keracunan mengikuti istilah
nilai LD50, mungkin dapat digunakan sebagai standar acuan.
Oral LD50 Daya Racun 15000 Sangat rendah

1.3. Personnel handling pesticide should be made
aware (and remain aware) of their potential hazards.
1.4. Precautions must be taken at all times to
ensure that they are handled safely. 1.5. Pesticide may enter the body orally by
inhalation or through the skin. 1.6. There may be general appreciation of the risks
when handling certain commercial formulations, but there is much less awareness of the fact that inhalation or dermal absorption or seemingly insignificant amounts of diluted pesticides over a prolonged period can pose a very significant health hazard.
1.7. Therefore operators should be trained to
regard all pesticides as hazardous and take strict precautions to prevent accidental ingestion or exposure.
2. STORAGE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS 2.1. Pesticide should be stored in their original
containers in identified bags according to the nature of the chemicals, i.e. herbicides, fungicides, insecticides.
2.2. The building should be secure, well
ventilated, and accessed only by authorized personnel.
2.3 Issue of pesticides should as far as possible be
entrusted to a senior monthly employee member.
2.4. The staff member must dispense estimated
daily requirements in clearly identified containers.
1.5 Pestisida mungkin masuk ketubuh melalui
mulut, pernafasan atau masuk melalui kulit. 1.6.
3
2.5. Ensure that all containers are returned to the store after the day work is completed.
2.6. Whenever possible pesticide should be issued
in their original containers. 2.7. If there are too large to be taken to the field,
the concentrates may be measured into clear polythene containers on which the pesticides and recommended dilution are clearly marked.
2.8. When chemicals are transferred to other
containers, these containers should be clearly labeled with pesticide identity.
2.9. Under no circumstances should spray
operators be given overnight custody of pesticide concentrate containers.
2.10. Pesticide must not be issued in domestic
containers such as soft drink or beer bottles. 2.11. Pesticide should be stored in separate store
from stuffs such as rice. 3. SOLUTION PREPARATION AND
APPLICATION When preparing pesticide solution, the following safety precaution should be observed:
a. Before using any pesticide, the label instruction must be read carefully and completely.
b. Wear the recommended protective
clothing.
c. Do not exceed the recommended application rate.
d. Some extremely hazardous pesticides are
formulated only in granular from so as to minimize risks in handling and
2.5. Pastikan bahwa semua wadah pestisida dikembalikan kegudang setelah selesai hari bekerja.
2.6. Bila mungkin pengeluaran pestisida harus
diisikan dalam wadah yang asli. 2.7.
4
application. They should never be made into slurries or solutions.
e. Handle the herbicide concentrate
carefully.
f. When preparing a spray solution pour the herbicide slowly to avoid splashing.
g. Solutions should be prepared in well ventilated places to avoid installation of toxic vapor or dust.
h. Do not eat, drink or smoke when
handling pesticides.
i. There are also safely precautions to be taken during pesticide application.
j. Check application equipment for leaks and ensure it is in proper working order.
k. Leaking equipments should not be used.
l. Never fill spray tanks right up to the cover/lid.
m. Wear appropriate clothing, particularly
when spraying LV or VLV, as the spray solution has high concentration of active ingredient.
n. Always spray down-wind and discontinue if conditions become too windy.
o. This is also a requirement to avoid spray
drift.
p. Operator must not use their mouth to blow or suck blocked nozzle.
q. Spare nozzle should be held by the field supervisor to replace which are blocked.
aplikasi.
h. Jangan makan, minum atau merokok bila
menangani pestisida.
q. Pengganti nozzle harus disediakan oleh
mandor untuk menukar nozzle yang tersumbat.

r. Operators must not eat, drink or smoke during pesticide application.
s. As soon as possible after finishing
application, the operator should clean himself/herself and all spraying equipment, using plenty of water.
t. This must not be done where
domestically used water will be polluted.
u. Protective clothing should also be washed thoroughly.
v. There is a code of practice for the disposal
of empty containers and old chemicals. This includes:
- Empty pesticide containers must not be
used as domestic containers as it is very difficult to wash them free from pesticide residue.
- They should be made useless by puncturing of flattening and buried at least 50 cm below ground in a special pit remote from housing and water catchments areas.
- Combustible containers should be burnt
unless the labels advise against it.
- Pesticides which have outlasted their shelf should be poured into the special pit mentioned above.
4. FIRST AID 4.1. Details of first aid following accidental
contamination of spray operators by pesticides should be familiar to all in charge of the spraying operation.
4.2. These include:
- Inhalation and contact with pesticides should be avoided at all times.
- In the event of accidental contamination, wash the contaminated area very
6
thoroughly with soap and water. - Should a person become ill when using a
pesticide, he/she should be sent to a doctor/hospital at once.
- The doctor should be informed of the name of the pesticide and its active ingredient.
- If possible, give the doctor a leaflet on the chemical, or the product label.
4.3. General symptoms of poisoning include:
- Headache - Nausea - Vomiting - In severe case, convulsions
4.4. These symptoms can sometimes be confused
with straight forward exhaustion. 4.5. If medical attention is not immediately
available, the following first aids should be given:
- Keep the person quiet and warm in shaded place.
- Remove protective clothing and loosen
other clothing. - Wash contaminated skin with plenty of
water and if available soap. - Initiate artificial respiration if breathing
weakens or ceases. - If a pesticide has been ingested, induce
vomiting by tickling the back of the throat with a clean finger or by means of warm saline solution drink.
- - When an eye is contaminated, flush it
repeatedly with clean water for at least 15 minutes.
- In the case of convulsion, prevent the person from biting his/her tongue by placing a hard object (e.g. a piece of wood or a folded piece of clean cloth between the teeth.
4.6. It is recommended that workers where
employed mainly for pesticide application be medically tested every 6 (six) months.
4.3. Gejala-gejala umum dari keracunan adalah:
- Pening - Mual - Muntah - Pada kasus berat, ayan (kejang-kejang).
4.4. Gejala-gejala ini kadang-kadang disalah
artikan akibat. 4.5.
4.6. Direkomendasikan bahwa pekerja yang
bekerja terutama dengan aplikasi pestisida diperiksa kesehatannya setiap 6 (enam) bulan.
7
5. PROTECTIVE CLOTHING 5.1. Although a hot and humid climate makes
use uncomfortable, general principle spray operators should be protected by good protective clothing.
5.2. Rubber boots are the top priority in
protection. 5.3. These should be the short type, but come to
just beneath the knee. 5.4. Studies have shown that greatest percentage
of operator contamination is clearly on the feet and lower leg regions.
5.5. Therefore, a policy of no boots no work
should be vigorously adopted. 5.6. Given the type of terrain over which operators
have to walk, provision needs to be made for regular boot replacement.
5.7. Holes in boots are dangerous sources of
contamination. 5.8. Trousers must be worn. Whether these should
be worn outside boots to prevent collection of chemical inside, or tucked inside is debatable.
5.9. Ordinary materials, e.g. cotton are better
than nothing. 5.10. These may become soaked in pesticide and
give a high concentration against the skin. 5.11. It would be preferable to purchase specially
fabricated trousers. 5.12. From the knee upwards they are made of a
particular fabric which has the property of enabling water vapor from the body to pass easily outwards, thus giving reduced perspiration problems, but water will not penetrate from the outside in (Gore-tex
5. BAJU PELINDUNG
5.2. Sepatu karet boot adalah prioritas utama
dalam perlindungan. 5.3. Sepatu karet boot seharusnya jenis yang
pendek tetapi sampai bawah lutut. 5.4.
8
material). 5.13. From the knee upwards, a very strong tear
resistant nylon should be used. 5.14. Jackets are unlikely to be worn because of
the heat, even when made of Gore-tex. Overall are hot.
5.15. An open sides cape has good points for
above waist protection.
- It is a rectangular piece of chemical resistant and tear resistant lightweight material with a hole in the centre for the head.
- It reaches downwards back and front to appoint just below the top of the boots.
- The cape provides both front and back protection whilst still allowing air and heat circulation at the sides.
5.16. A long sleeved shirt should be worn. 5.17. Face mask. Respirators are unlikely to be
worn because of discomfort. 5.18. A triangular piece of cloth hanging over the
nose and mouth or surgical type cotton musk gives no real protection.
5.19. A compromise solution is a rolled
alumunium frame easily moulded to fit firmly around the nose and over the mouth, holding in place standard filter pads.
5.20. A face mask is not required for the type of
herbicides and application methods commonly used on Austindo estates, but they should be provided to comply with Government legislation.
5.21. Eye shields are not required whilst spraying
some herbicides. 5.22. They should be used whilst mixing solutions
and cleaning machines.
tex). 5.13. Dari lutut keatas, harus digunakan nilon yang
tahan sobekan. 5.14. Pemakaian jaket tidak disukai karena panas
walaupun dibuat dari Gore-tex tetap saja panas.
5.21. Perlindungan mata tidak diperlukan untuk
menyemprot herbisida tertentu. 5.22. Mereka harus menggunakan (pelindung
mata) walaupun sedang mencampur larutan dan membersihkan mesin-mesin.
9
5.23. Goggles should have wide vision and
indirect liquid proof ventilation. 5.24. A hat of any description can be used,
provided it gives adequate protection. If made of absorbent material, it must be washed after each days spraying.
5.25. Gloves should always be worn since hands
are a major site of contamination. - Gloves must be solvent resistant and not
prone to abrasion, ruts, snags and punctures.
- Gloves for use when handling concentrated pesticides should preferably be nitrile rubber as these provide a greater degree of protection than natural rubber.
- Natural rubber should be used if others are not available.
5.26. All protective clothing should be washed
thoroughly, preferably at the end of days work and at least once a week.
- It should be washed separately from normal washing because of pesticide contamination.
- Some environmental pollution will be inevitable if washing is done in rivers.
- Gloves are to be cleaned inside and out checked for leaks.
5.27. To prevent use of protective clothing outside
working hours, a possible system would be to provide storage space at the equipment store and ensure all items are left at the end of each days/after washing.
5.28. Recommendations for minimum protective
clothing for using herbicides are as follows:
5.28. Rekomendasi untuk baju pelindung yang
sederhana untuk menggunakan pestisida adalah sebagai berikut:
10
- Mixing: Rubber boots Rubber gloves Eye shield Long trousers Long sleeved shirt Hat
- Spraying:
Rubber boots Long trousers Long sleeved shirt Hat (Government requirements of face mask + eye shields).
- Cleaning/repairing machine:
Rubber boots Rubber gloves Eye shields Long trousers Long sleeved shirt Hat
5.29. Management role in the safety aspects of
pesticide application is of up most importance.
5.30. Issued protective clothing must be worn, and
replaced where it no longer fulfils requirements.
5.31. It is the interests of both spray operators
and Austindo that avoidable accidents do not occur.
5.32. Aspects of legislation, which are subject to
change, must be observed.
- Mencampur: Sepatu boot Sarung tangan Kacamata Celana panjang Baju lengan panjang Topi
- Menyemprot:
Sepatu boot Celana panjang Baju lengan panjang Topi (pemerintah menganjurkan pemakaian masker muka+kacamata)
- Pembersihan/perbaikan mesin-mesin:
Sepatu boot Sarung tangan Kacamata Celana panjang Baju lengan panjang Topi
5.29. Peraturan manajemen dalam aspek-aspek
aplikasi pestisida yang aman adalah sangat penting.
5.30. Baju pelindung yang dibagikan harus dipakai
dan ditukar bila tidak baik lagi. 5.31.
5.32. Aspek-aspek per undang-undangan yang
berobah harus diamati.
