1.0 Introduction

1.1 The goal The goal of my personal project was to abide to a personal study of photography that shows how much I have accomplished within half a year of devoting myself to this hobby. Essentially, I aimed to create a well presented photo book of my photography adventures and see how I have progressed and learned. The product allows me to observe how I have applied the learning to my photography. I also want people’s thoughts and emotions to be moved, and influence their views towards photography. To achieve my goal, I have to personally commit to taking photographs over a period of approximately six months.

I have personally always found photographs amusing to look at, and observe, but never pursued photography earnestly. Ever since a couple years ago, I’ve always wanted a nicer camera to shoot photos with more control and added impressions. Over the summer, I got my hands on a DSLR camera which helped advance my photography and gave me a huge opportunity to explore photography and work from my imagination. I was further motivated to capture the beauty I saw in the fleeting moments of life while following my own natural direction.

I feel photography as a whole has opened up another creative side to my personality that I wouldn’t be able to achieve within my everyday life. The photo book documents the things I see in my perspective and shares the beauty of these moments; it has allowed me to express many of my thoughts and feelings.

1.2 Area of InteractionHuman IngenuityI have chosen Human Ingenuity for the context of my project, which has helped me define a specific goal and identify a topic in a specified area. Seeing that my topic is photography, and my goal is to create a photo book, my project falls into Human Ingenuity. Human Ingenuity is based on the creative process, allowing us to explore human creativity and how it influences the human mind along with society. My project’s aim is to change people’s view of photography through solving problems, developing certain skills and creating a product that shows a level of human creativity. As I am going to focus on Human Ingenuity, I will consider what kind of an impact my product has on others, and demonstrate human creativity.

1.3 Guiding Question/ Inquiry Question “How can I keep a journal of my photography adventures and

see how I have progressed with my photography?”

I have designed this guiding question to narrow down the entire project by defining all aspects of my

4

inquiry, helping me to focus on the goal as I progress through the course of the project. In order to answer this question, I need to explore the process of human creativity, focus on the evolution of the product, and consider its impact on society and the human mind.

1.4 SpecificationsThe content and photos in my photo book must demonstrate my understanding of photography and communicate a strong message. I will apply my own knowledge and engage my mindset of photography to shoot the photographs in an attempt to give a unique quality to my work, and perhaps stand out among other photographers. I will apply a wide range of photography styles and techniques using different approaches in order for people to visualize my personal style. I will familiarize myself with the three basic elements of photography (see 2.1 Principal components) to get the best end result, and apply any other learning from the investigation phase. These specifications will allow me to evaluate the quality of the outcome or product and measure my success.

1.4 Methods of Achieving My GoalPrior to achieving my goal, I will have to investigate and collection information. I can explore my inquiry through methods such as using credible sources for photography-related tips and advice. My guiding question helps me to focus on the purpose and aim of my project. I can look at the different styles of work produced by a range of different photographers in search for inspiration to develop my learning. As I am going to measure my success through how much I have accomplished within half a year, I will ensure I take photographs every month from July until December.

2.0 Selection of sources

I needed more knowledge in how to take better photos, and this required me to start from the basics and work my way up. I first started conducting research by brainstorming a wide range of ideal sources on topics related to photography. I mainly used electronic resources that I was already familiar with such as DigitalRev and KenRockwell – both reputable websites that share insightful information on photography, with input from professionals that have many years of experience. I broke down my readings and came up with three main components. The research I have conducted for my Personal Project on photography directly relates to my plan, and different ways that can help me maneuver towards the final product.

2.1 Principal componentsThe investigation phase of my personal project consisted of three principal components: Basic elements of photography, 8 step process to build foundation of a good photograph, and analysis of photo book companies. The knowledge I have attained from the investigation process has helped me define and shape out a more effective plan.

For instance, I have looked into the “three basic elements” of photography – aperture, shutter speed and ISO, this component of my research has been valuable because these essential elements relate to exposure, which is the basic element of any photograph taken and recorded. Looking at these elements has helped me improve my photography work significantly; they have taught me how to get a ‘good’ exposure. The best end result is a matter of the understanding of particular scenes you want

5

then determining the optimal exposure. This has also inspired me to explore photography in more depth, to get familiar with these elements and shoot photos out of my comfort zone.

I have also discovered 8 simple points that help build the foundation of a good photograph (identifying the point of interest, lighting (quality and direction), aperture, shutter speed, composition, choosing the appropriate lens and focal length, determining the optimal exposure (metering), and timing. These points have almost become second nature to me every time I am out shooting, and the result is that I have been able to shoot more dynamic photographs. With practice, I should be able to produce photos that make others envious while keeping these 8 points in mind.

The second half of investigating was dedicated to researching photo books and the companies that offer such services. I was essentially looking for a company devoted to quality and sustainability with reasonable prices and good customer service. Some of the design specifications I set for my photo book were a custom Hardcover, 30 – 50 page count, standard landscape trim size, professional-grade paper, and intuitive photo book software with an abundance of creative and customizable layouts.

2.2 Evaluation of sourcesResearching potential photo book companies was an entirely new experience because I have a brief understanding of the photo book publishing process prior to researching. This component has given me a better overall understanding of how the application of the final product outcome will turn out according to the needs of my photography portfolio.

Essentially, the research has helped me decide what actions to take and apply to my goal; I have learned various ways to maintain the project more effectively. I was also provided with a huge sense of inspiration for the creation stage, browsing through innovative photos that deliver strong ideas and are visually stunning to look at.

3.0 Application of Information

3.1 Analysis of informationAs I plan to create a photo book, I have to learn how to get a good exposure for any photograph. I achieved this by focusing on the end result of the photograph and how to get there. I have found two concepts that have guided my photography. Composition is an essential part of attracting the viewer, and guiding our eye around the photo. I have also discovered the importance of lighting in any photograph, and how we perceive light. By learning how to control lighting, my images have become more three-dimensional, more textural and more professional looking. These two concepts are the backbone of any picture. Of course, the subject, gesture, point-of-view, impact, perspective, balance, colour, weight, timing, negative space, line, textures are all other crucial factors that make up a photo.

3.2 Development of techniquesLooking at the big picture, I learned that the only way I can continue to learn is through curiosity and mental acquisitiveness. I was looking for a new way to shoot, without lugging around loads of gear. I took mental notes of what controls I have played around with and how the combinations reflect onto

6

the photos. I noticed I have been exposed to an open-minded consciousness, by trying different techniques, and looking at the subject in different way to open up a new dimension in my photography. I started to develop my own style through learning common techniques and being influenced by the work of other photographers.

3.3 Method of applicationThe method of application I used for this project is similar to that of the IB MYP Technology’s Design Cycle. The five phases of this cycle consist of the Investigate, Plan, Design, Create, and Evaluate phases. These five phases are comparable to the process of creating my product and my essay structure. The first step of my project was to investigate on the topic and brainstorm ideas. I then had to devise a logical step-by-step plan that addresses how I will achieve the goal. The Design and Create phaseswere carried out simultaneously, as I was taking photos while designing the photo book itself. Lastly, I completed the evaluation in the project statement.

4.0 Achieving the goal

My product is a photo book titled “A Photographic Journey”, published by Blurb (see appendix 7.2). I have used this form of presentation as it is the most practical way to showcase photographs and the outcome clearly relates to the goal and my focus area of interaction.

4.1 Product description The pages of the photo book are surrounded with a “Viewfinder” theme. The front and back covers along with the flaps have a graphite background to stand out more from the rest of the pages that have a white background which give a more neutral impression. The cover page is simplistic and arranged well with deep contrast and strong tones. Inside the photo book, you will find a title page that writes “A Photographic Journey”, and an introduction page that explains to readers the purpose of creating the product and some of the camera gear I used. Following that, the pages feature a photo is placed in the centre, a title at the top, a brief caption, and some EXIF info (the aperture, exposure, focal length, and ISO respectively) with the description. There are two photos that I found would look more distinct with a two-page full-bleed spread, this allowed for further variety. After the last image, I have included a few inspiring photography quotations that I have applied to my photographs and learning. Another aim and purpose of the photo book is to present it to people, particularly the youth, and to influence the way they see the art, science and practice behind photography.

5.0 Reflection on Learning

5.1 Difficulties and SuccessesI have successfully completed my project against the specifications to achieve my goal. I have come across many challenges and difficulties throughout the process, yet many successes and solutions.

The investigation was an extensive process that took up a significant component of my timeline;

Page 7: Personal Project Report

2012-2013 MYP Personal ProjectPhoto book, “A Personal Study of Photography”

7

nonetheless, all of the research was well worth it as I have gained valuable knowledge on photography that has helped me advance much faster. I learned that the personal style found in my photography is my personality presented through the photographs that I take.

I generally gained a deeper understanding of photography and demonstrated attributes for many of the IB Learner Profiles, above all, a Risk-Taker; I approached several unfamiliar situations with determination and got myself out there to take photos using new ideas and strategies.

In the end, I am absolutely satisfied with the final outcome of my product which shows a great level of Human Ingenuity. I am aware of the positive influence my product has had on many people, and I acknowledge the inspiration I have given to them as a result of undertaking the Personal Project. The product unquestionably shows my unique photographs that I have produced within six months, moreover my creativity and talent. Nonetheless, I think what matters to me most about this project is that it has given me the opportunity to create something that truly reflects my interests and passion and. The entire project was truly an enjoyable experience and of my own initiative. I have no regrets choosing this topic, product aim or area of interaction from day one.

5.2 Inquiry question responseThe response I came up for my inquiry question is to be persistent taking photos, and to leave your comfort zone, rather let your vision guide you. When you take a chance on something, it often pays off, and when you don’t, you are just losing sight of what could’ve happened if you took the risk. Through this mindset and dedication, I could immediately see how I have progressed as a photographer despite the short time period.

5.3 Relations to Area of InteractionOver the course of the project, I have adhered to Human Ingenuity throughout the entire process as an area of interaction which has encouraged me to see relationships between subjects, and inquire into the art of photography. Furthermore, Human Ingenuity has allowed me to define a personal level of initiative and creativity that changes the perspective for other people. I have explored how to create a photo book that is sophisticated and well presented, an entirely new experience for me, and how it is affected by the entire process.

I inevitably gained a new understanding for Human Ingenuity and the meaning of “ingenious”. I deliberately became more aware of the processes and products involved in innovation, creation, development and change. I learned how a product can develop and change over time and how it impacts on life and society.

5.4 Process journalThe format I used for my process journal was digital/ web-based. I found this format suits all my needs, and was the most effective and manageable. I begun the process journal from the start of the project and used it throughout the process. The advantage of using a web-based process journal is that my supervisor can access it whenever she needs to. This allows for her to better understand my thought processes, the progress I have made,

Page 8: Personal Project Report

8

and the development of my project. Furthermore, I was easily able to see and edit my process journal, and choose from a variety of additional mediums such as YouTube videos or photos. The entries I included mentioned my plans, interactions with my supervisor and human sources, processes I have completed, and reflections on stages of the project. The process journal has essentially allowed me to explore ideas and evaluate my work for reflecting on learning.

5.5 Product survey (see Appendix 7.3)To justify that I have achieved my goal successfully; I have conducted a survey meant to collect the ideas and opinions of others. The open-ended survey asks questions that can evidently disclose their views on my product and its success to impact others.

5.6 ImprovementsFollowing the completion of my product, many areas for improvement have arisen as a result of wrongful decisions and inattentiveness. First and foremost, I lacked proper time management throughout the project which has limited my potential. I can say that I was originally well on track in the summer, but as the school year began, I had less time to work on the project as I had to focus on my academic studies. Many photo opportunities have slipped away because I wasn’t prepared to take advantage of them and at times I have chosen not to take responsibility for myself. If I could revisit these situations, I would immediately take the photos regardless of how they turn out as opposed to missing the opportunities entirely.

7.0 Appendices

7.1 Blurb Bookshttp://www.blurb.com/

I have chosen Blurb as a platform for publishing my final product, and they have provided me with a great overall experience. Given this was my first time publishing a photo book; I set my expectations appropriately, and wasn’t expecting a flawless product. Upon receiving the photo book, I was quite satisfied with the quality of printing asides from a few issues. However, I would say the quality is not on par with book store quality books. The first characteristic that caught my attention was the glossy Hardcover with Dust Jacket, it felt resilient and durable, and gave my book a sophisticated look. The Premium Lustre finish paper was a good surprise, the paper is slightly heavier and pleasant to touch. The custom ProLine Charcoal endsheets have a light texture for a great feel and complemented my book well; the unique shade gave my book its finished look. The soft colour gradients, even in problematic colour zones, transitioned smoothly from darker to lighter – no banding nor posterization. Colour fidelity was my only complaint, as some renditions of colours appeared much duller than the image of my monitor, and I have noticed slight hue differences. The customer support resolved my shipping issue professionally and left me satisfied. In the end, I was pleased with Blurb photo books and their professionalism, given this was my first time publishing a photo book.
