NewsDistrictGreetings, Perry residents!

It’s hard to believe we’re at the close of another year. It seemed like winter would never end, and now spring has flown right by. We’ve been blessed with another tremendous school year, and have watched our kids accomplish amazing things. Everywhere we go, we hear the same question: “How do you guys do all that you do at Perry?” The answer is a complete, relentless dedication to our kids by a tremendous staff and a supportive community. Thank you for making Perry the place to be! We wish you a restful, safe summer, and we’ll see you in August!

in a safe environment. To encourage students to become responsible, productive citizens and life-long learners.

Attendance PolicyAt the April 22 Board of Education meeting, a new student attendance policy for the 2014-2015 was approved. A committee of administrators and teachers worked on the changes for several months. Please visit the Perry Local website to view the entire document.

The new policy reflects the Ohio Revised Code and aligns with most schools in the county and throughout the state. The state now requires that the student calendar is determined by hours per year, not days per year. Consequently, the attendance policy is more restrictive and meets the requirement that students may not miss more than 105 excused/unexcused hours per year. (Approximately 15 days.)

This policy helps answer questions regarding linkage and student growth for habitual or chronically absent students.

Here are a few highlights:

Grades and attendance are no longer linked per our old policy (F given to more than 7 absences in a 9 weeks)

Students cannot miss more than 15 excused/unexcused absences PER YEAR. Administrators or designee will be filing informal “truancy” on students once they have missed 7 days.

Excused Absences are those defined by ORC 3301-69-02. These require parent communication (phone call) and a note with a parent signature within (3 school days) of returning to school.

Medical excuses are not included in the 15 excused absences as defined by the ORC. All medical excuses must be signed by the attending physician and be submitted to the individual building attendance office within 3 school days of being treated by the doctor.

Family vacations will be reduced from 10 to 5 days. These do not count toward the 15 excused days.

If you have any questions, please contact your building administrator.

Alumni Flag Football

On Saturday, May 10 the first annual Alumni Flag Football Tournament was hosted by the Perry Project Group. The near 30 Alumni that returned were the last to ever play on the grass in Perry Stadium. The afternoon of fun and competition was a great start to a new Perry tradition. Special thanks to Brad Fox, Mark Lyon, Rob Toth, Joe Libster, Matt Carona, and many others that helped make this event possible.

WHEN HAPPINESS IS IN YOUR HEART AND SPRING IS IN THE AIR, IT’S FUN TO BRIGHTEN SOMEONE’S DAY BY SHOWING THAT YOU CARE…

DID YOU KNOW? The youngest man who became President of the United States was Theodore Roosevelt, who at the age of 42 succeeded the martyred William McKinley.

BEWARE: Perry Township Citizens are now receiving letters from the “International Lotto Commission, Madrid, Spain”. The information states that they have named an agent in the United States for the addressee in the United States. Remember citizens, the entire letter is false and when received should be destroyed immediately.

The Perry Township Police Department recognizes the importance of keeping the children and staff of Perry Local Schools safe. Two full time Police Officers are assigned to Perry Local Schools. These officers are continually monitoring the area.

POUR OUT WHAT YOU HAVE TO ENRICH THE LIVES OF OTHERS, AND YOU WILL SOON FIND YOUR OWN CUP RUNNING OVER WITH JOY…

FUN FACT: 20 million pounds of paper clips are produced each year in the United States. The popular gem-style paper clip hasn’t changed in over a century since it was patented November 9th, 1899. It was designed with round edges so papers would not be torn.

On Memorial Day, May 26th, the Perry Township Citizens held the BICENTENNIAL HERO 5K Run/Walk! It was a fantastic event!

Mark your calendar for Saturday, July 12th from 3:00-10:00 p.m. at Hartwick Park. In conjunction with the Perry Township Bicentennial Events, you are cordially invited to “A TASTE OF PERRY!” You may choose from your favorite appetizers, entrées, desserts and beverages from a variety of tastings courtesy of the Perry Community and local vendors. This will be a family-friendly extravaganza for all to enjoy. Please bring your family, friends and your lawn chairs, and gather around the Hartwick Gazebo as you enjoy the DJ entertainment. A Jazz Player will be around to perform for the group. Many exciting events are scheduled for the day and admission is free! You all come!

The 165th Stark County Fair will begin August 26th and end on September 1st, Labor Day.

Closing Thoughts: The Spirit of Friendship lives forever, how little it costs if we give it a thought, to make some heart happy each day, just one kind word or a tender smile!

Senior Portrait Guidelines

Dear Photographers and Seniors (Class of 2015),

We are contacting you early in hopes of establishing guidelines for the senior portraits for the 2015 edition of the Perry High School yearbook. We do our senior portraits in a very traditional manner and follow fairly strict guidelines, which we hope you will abide by.

HERE ARE OUR REQUIREMENTS:

We would prefer that the senior yearbook portrait be sent to us digitally. The dimensions should be 3 x 5 inches, 300 dpi and it may be either a PNG, TIFF, or a JPG format.

• All photographs should be in color• The background should be plain, traditional, or light

colored• No dark, bright, or flashy color, stars of light, fences,

lattices, etc.• Head and shoulders pose only, no hands• The portrait should be a traditional, full-sized one

with a resolution of no less than 300. • Please allow sufficient headroom around the portrait

for cropping. This is extremely important since we receive portraits from many different photographers.

• Photographs should have clear darks and lights—soft focus portraits reproduce very, very poorly in the yearbook.

DRESS CODE— Please follow the Perry High School dress code for the yearbook portrait. The principal has requested that boys wear a shirt and tie for their photos this year.

You may use the photographer of your choice for your yearbook portrait, but please make sure that he/she follows all of the guidelines. James Wood Studios is the contracted photographer for Perry High School’s sports teams and co-curricular activities. Special yearbook portrait pricing is available from them at their new studio on Lincoln Way in Perry Township.

Portraits are due to Perry High School on or before October 1, 2014. We are not able to accept photos after this date so please plan accordingly.

Please feel free to contact me, Casey Jenkins, at Perry High School. The phone number is (330) 477-3486, and my email is [email protected].

Senior Pictures ATTENTION ALL 2015 SENIORS AND PARENTS

Senior pictures will be taken this year by James Wood Photography on the two dates listed below:

1. Wednesday, November 19, 2014 from 7:00 am – 11:00 am in the auxiliary gym by scheduled appointment only.

2. Wednesday, January 28, 2015 from noon – 3:00 pm in the auxiliary gym by scheduled appointment only.

A $25 sitting fee will be charged at the time of the appointment unless you are purchasing a senior picture package from James Wood Photography by September 1, 2014. Information on packages is available on our website and at James Wood Photography.

Early Bird Specials from James Wood:

Seniors who have their Senior Portraits (any session) photographed by James Wood Photography prior to September 1, 2014 will not be charged for their yearbook photograph.

Seniors who book a session with James Wood Photography by July 15, 2014 will receive 50% off their session! To schedule an appointment contact James Wood Photography at 330-478-3033

You still have the option to use your own photographer; however, your senior picture MUST be SUBMITTED BY OCTOBER 1, 2014 AND ADHERE TO THE GUIDELINES IN THE ARTICLE TO THE RIGHT. Any questions should be directed to Mrs. Jenkins by phone or email → (330) 477-3486 or [email protected]

We encourage our seniors to have their senior pictures done over the summer to avoid any issues during the school year or the chance of not having their senior picture submitted by the due date (October 1, 2014). Due to strict publication deadlines, we will not accept any late photos.

Our goal is to have every senior in the yearbook, so if there is economic hardship please contact Mrs. Jenkins by phone or email.

Thank you, Yearbook Staff

Spotlight on Languages100% of the PHS English Language Learners taking the 2014 Ohio Test of English Language Acquisition increased their scores by one full proficiency level in Comprehension (listening and reading), and in their Composite score (listening, speaking, reading and writing). Thank you to all the classroom teachers who helped support the ELLs in your classroom!

Christy Miller, French teacher at PHS, recently presented a workshop at the Ohio Foreign Language Conference. Her workshop was based on using music in the foreign language classroom. Christy’s workshop was chosen as the best at the conference by teachers in attendance. She has been asked to present this workshop again in 2015, and at the Central States conference on Foreign Languages. She will represent Ohio at this multi-state conference in the spring of 2015. In addition, Christy has been instrumental in bringing quality professional development for northeast Ohio language teachers.

Perry teen Institute & SaddOn Wednesday April 30th Perry Teen institute and SADD traveled to Columbus to attend the, “We are the Majority Rally and Concert”.

One of the most common misconceptions from our society is that a majority of young people are making detrimental decisions that effect the rest of their lives. However, research has continuously shown that a vast majority of youth are making positive, healthy choices.

To help capitalize on this message students had the opportunity to march in the pouring rain to the Ohio Statehouse to let their voices on this important issue be heard. At the Columbus Commons the day consisted of opportunities for learning about the importance of living a positive, healthy lifestyle and a concert by the Grammy winning,hip-hop star, Mario.

What’s the Broadway musical for next year?

Science FairPerry High School held their 2nd annual Science Fair on Thursday, February 6, 2014. Forty-eight freshman and three sophomores displayed the final results of their research projects that they began in October. The students’ projects covered a wide range of topics from electrolyte levels in drinks to how fashion impacts your perception of people. Many members of the high school science staff, along with area college professors, judged the students work and four of the students earned a Superior rating: Grace Diguilio, with her project on Color Perception Affecting Taste; Maguire Tausch, with his Automatic Pet Food Feeder; Makenzea Briggs, with her project on Grape Soda Chromatography; and Erin Kessler, with her project on BLASTing the flu virus.

The students went on to compete at the District 13 Science Day on March 8 at the University of Mount Union. Their projects were judged by college professors, high school teachers, scientists and doctors. Makenzea, Maguire and Erin earned a Superior rating. Maguire also received a special award from Diebold for engineering. These three students then competed at the State Science Day on May 10 at The Ohio State University. The State Science Day showcased the work of 1,250 students from across Ohio and the Perry students did fantastic! Makenzea and Maguire earned an Excellent rating as 9th graders and Erin earned a Superior rating! Erin, who competed last year as a 9th grader, is our first student to earn a Superior rating at the State Science Day. Her project looked at the DNA sequences in the strains of the flu virus in the vaccine compared to the DNA sequences of the most common flu virus strains that were present that year. Her results showed that the flu vaccine is more effective than we think!

Accomplishments During the 2013-2014 school year, 100% of seniors

who completed Phlebotomy through Med Tech, and who qualified to sit for the National Phlebotomy Certification, PASSED the exam!

Project Manager, Erica Matthews led the implementation of Panther Yoga with the help of Assistant Project Manager of Finances, Colton Luxenburg, and Assistant Project Manager of Communications, Josh White.

Congratulations to the following seniors in Teaching Professions for passing the cumulative 24-essay portfolio and earning college credit: Rachelle Calabria, Amber Nolen, Ashley Murdock, and Judy Singo.

Congratulations to Josh Childs, member of the Teaching Professions Career Tech program, for being elected as the president for the Ohio Future Educator’s Association. He will lead the Ohio organization for the 2014-2015 school year.

The Perry community now has newly licensed cosmetologists after 100% of students pass the state test! Several of the newly licensed cosmetologists are already employed in area salons.

Students in Healthcare Occupations & Technology and Med Tech Prep completed their nursing assistant program this spring. Because Perry has a testing center, 38 students were able to test and 33 passed their exams and are officially nursing assistants for the state of Ohio! The other five will retest on June 3. Fingers crossed we will have a 100% pass rate. Four students from the HO&T class have already found employment as a nursing assistant.

Wyatt Bamfield, Trisha Barnett, Sarah Beadle, and Brandon Nisewonger won the Economics Jewelry Sale funded by an ArtsinStark grant, and split the $259 revenue generated by the project.

Over 150 PHS students, Grades 9-11, have met the eligibility and testing requirements to take college courses offered at Perry High School for the 2014-2015 school year. These students are already college ready!

The Physical Education Department is proud to announce current students have passed the Physical Fitness Assessment. The assessment includes: 15-minute continuous jog, improvement by 5 on their Pacer test, 75 push-ups, 75 sit-ups, and 1-minute and 30 seconds (without rest) of the following: body squats, wall-sits, dot drills, superman.

The Theatre is Alive and WellThe 2013-14 school year was an exciting and accomplished year for the Perry Theatre as they welcomed their 53rd season. Drama and acting classes were a huge hit for students wanting to study the art of Theatre and Dramatic Arts. Drama classes are always popular and fill up fast.

The annual Children’s Theatre production this year, “Winnie the Pooh,” mesmerized young audience members as they got their first introduction to the world of live theatre. The annual Perry Broadway Musical certainly upheld the title of The Little Broadway of Stark County as it wowed the audience with the fun-loving characters and music of “Li’l Abner.” All in all, a great year with much talent and exciting learning took place within the walls of the Perry Theatre. But, as Perry Theatre Director “Louie” always says, “You ain’t seen nothin’ yet...wait till next year!”

Mural & Autism Awareness Project

Students in Edison’s Art Club worked on a mural in the cafeteria of the school to improve the space. Last fall they began brainstorming and created a design that would eventually come to life on the walls. The mural depicts silhouettes of various students with bold splashes of color in the background. Lastly, a quote by Albert Einstein completes the piece, “When we all think alike no one thinks very much.” Students also worked on a small mosaic for Austim Awareness month in April that will be showcased in the entryway of the school. We are proud of their work and dedication!

Fourth Grade Gets readyFourth grade students always get nervous thinking about going to Pfeiffer. They worry about the number of students, the homework, having a locker, being late to class, and numerous other scary items. The week of May 19 was the big visit to Pfeiffer. The staff was determined to ease the anxiety. Upon arrival, students were greeted by the giant panther, balloons and a welcome sign. During orientation, Mr. Merritt stressed the positives and answered questions. The fifth grade teachers and specialists were featured in a video where they told students what things would be like in their classes next year. Finally, the current fifth grade student council members took the new fourth graders on a tour. Faces going out the door looked a lot less stressed than the faces that came in the door. They are ready for Pfeiffer!

Girls on the runUnder the direction of guidance counselor Pam Paustenbaugh, Pfeiffer Intermediate School had two teams this year for Girls on the Run. With two teams, Pfeiffer had meetings Mondays through Thursdays for ten weeks. During that time, girls learned how to live a healthy lifestyle both mentally and physically. All the work culminated on Saturday, May 31, at Walsh University with a 5K run/walk. The day was perfect with sunshine and mild temperatures. Our girls (listed below) did well with many returning participants improving their times.Cortney AilingAbigail ChaseKelly DowlingAnna FedorChloe FergusonRayna GreenLauren HartlineAllyson HendersonMadison JacksonReily Kreger

math and literacy NightGenoa’s Title Team hosted a Spring Math and Literacy Night where March Maddness was the theme. Students participated in basketball themed games and activities while supporting their basketball hopefuls by wearing their jerseys and team colors. There was lots of fun to be had. The gymnasium was full of games, concession snacks were provided, Sippo library joined in, and families were encouraged to visit the 4th grade, grant-funded Art Show in the art room.

The teacher academy students from Perry High School, Perry cheerleaders, Perry softball team members, and Genoa’s teachers all came to support the event. Thank you to all of these wonderful volunteers. We look forward to seeing all of our Genoa families at the next Literacy Night in the Fall.

Fond FarewellOn May 15, Genoa friends and family came together to celebrate the retirement of Kathy Humble, a second grade teacher at Genoa prior to her retirement. The event was held at Lakeside Event Center in Perry! Owners Lauri and Irwin helped to create a wonderful party that showcased Kathy’s years as a compassionate and dedicated teacher. Over the years, she served as a preschool, high school, and elementary school teacher and spent 16 years in Perry.

Kathy shared her past experiences, funny moments, and unforgettable lessons she has gathered throughout the years. Her students made a beautiful painting for her and added each one of their fingerprints to the work of art. She was moved to tears as she opened it. She was also presented with a potters bench, a garden bench, and Vera Bradley purses to help her transition to traveling and gardening with her family. Each teacher and staff member made a page for a scrapbook that was given to her to keep all the fond memories close to her heart.

Perry has been blessed to have her inspiring and molding the minds of our future leaders. She is truly an inspiration! She will be greatly missed by us all! We wish Kathy the best in all her new adventures which include spending time with family, visiting her beach house, and gardening. Happy Retirement, Kathy!

Fitness FridayFitness Friday is a new fitness and nutrition program for fourth graders at Genoa Elementary School. The program was led by Mr. Shenk, the physical education teacher, and Mr. Calzada, the school counselor. The goal of Fitness Friday is to teach students how to grow strong, how to stay fit, and how to keep their bodies healthy. This 40 minute before school program includes a 20 minute exercise workout, showing students how to grow strong and stay fit, and a 20 minute lesson on nutrition and health.

The goal of before-school physical activity is to encourage students to develop exercise habits that will benefit them mentally and physically for the entire day. The earlier they develop healthy habits, the more likely they will become healthy adults. The program, along with having fun, helps students set fitness and health goals and work hard to reach them. There were 22 students enrolled in this first year program. We are proud of these Genoa students for taking an interest in health and fitness.

Fourth Grade recognition at KnappOn Thursday, May 22, Knapp fourth graders were recognized for completing the first phase of their educational journey at Perry Local. The students gave introductions and sang a few songs with the most inspirational one being Count on Me by Bruno Mars. The families watched a slide show which had a baby picture and a current picture of each student. This was an awesome moment when you could see it hit parents that their children are growing up. Each student was presented with a dictionary provide by PAKT (Parent and Knapp Teacher Organization). Some tears were shed at the bitter sweet transition from elementary to intermediate school. At Knapp, we are extremely proud of our 4th graders and we wish them the best of good luck! They were awesome at Knapp and we know they will be exceptional at Pfeiffer. Good luck fourth graders we will miss you!!

Track TeamCongratulations to Lohr’s 4th grade track team members! On Wednesday, May 14, athletes from the Perry Local Elementary Schools competed in the annual 4th Grade Track Meet. Students competed in the 100m dash, 200m dash, 400m dash, 4X100m relay, long jump, and the softball throw.

After much great competition and school spirit from all students, teachers, and parents in attendance, Lohr Elementary came home for the third year in a row as Elementary Track Champions with an overall score of 102 points. Lohr looks forward to competing again next year with fellow 4th grade classmates from across the district!

4th Grade recognitionOn May 20, 4th grade students and their parents gathered for the 4th annual recognition ceremony. Students performed a short program, directed by their music teacher Mrs. Wendt, with the hit songs “Turn, Turn, Turn,” “Let it Go,” and “All For One.” After the performance, 13 students were recognized for their outstanding academic achievement by receiving the President’s Award for Educational Excellence. This presidential award recognizes students who have held a 3.5 GPA or higher and scored an advanced on the reading or math Ohio Achievement Assessment. Recipients included: Jyllian Casselberry, Branden Craig, Cameron Croston, Emily Eshelman, Joseph Harmon, Melody Harrison, Nicholas Hoagland, Maggie Loucks, Ryanne McCollister, Quinten Pierce, Carson Stebler, Sam Stillion, and Ashton Turkal.

A second award was presented to four students for showing great character and responsibility. The American Citizenship Award, also known as the Presidential Silver Award, is given to students who are always prepared, complete homework and assignments on time, try hard each day, and treat others with respect. Danny Bowe, Vincen Hildebrand, Jordan Quinn and Rylee Wood all demonstrated

great moral character and values and qualified for this award. Congratulations go to all our 4th grade students for another year completed!

Growing like Weeds!Mrs. Deuble’s first grade class integrated science and reading. Since the new reading series had a better balance between fiction and non-fiction texts, they tried to incorporate science and social studies with reading whenever possible. In class, students read A Tree is a Plant and in science worked on living things. Mr. Deuble, an account manager for Brothers Grimm Landscape and Design Company, came in to teach the students about the parts of a plant and the plant life cycle. While he was in the classroom, the students also planted their own sunflower seeds. The students watched them grow in the classroom for a week then took them home to plant. They will take a picture of their sunflowers in August and bring the photo in to share next school year! We can’t wait to see how they grow, just like our first graders who are growing to be second graders!

Perry Helping PerryStarting on May 2, at a Baseball behavior incentive party, Lohr students began donating breakfast items and canned foods to help support the Perry Helping Perry Food Pantry. If the student body reached the goal of 400 items, they were promised to watch Mrs. Clements, the principal, get a pie in the face. Over the course of two weeks, the students brought in 638 food items! Because of the overwhelming response, Mrs. Clements was asked to kiss a pig to celebrate the great support from the student body. On Friday, May 23, students gathered outside to watch the festivities. Students chanted and cheered as they watched Mrs. Clements kiss Babe, the pig, and Mrs. Noggle smear a whipped cream pie in her face. It was a great way to celebrate student donations and Perry Helping Perry support. Way to go Lohr!

Service Learning ProjectEach spring, Mrs. Ousley’s social studies classes conduct a service learning project. This project coincides with the citizenship and character building lessons. Students vote on a charity that they would like to help and then plan, organize, and run the entire project themselves. The Class Presidents, Vice-Presidents, and Cabinet Members all work hard

to facilitate this project. This year, our 4th graders chose to do a “Humane Society Wish List Drive” and it was an incredible success! The students created posters, wrote and read ads for the morning announcements, volunteered at the donation table, tallied up the donations, and even helped call local pizza shops to look for pizza donations to offer as an incentive to the grade level that brought in the most donations! The support and generosity of our Whipple families and students was more than we could have ever hoped for! The drive was an incredible success! Not only were the students able to help the Humane Society, but they discovered the importance of leadership and community service! They learned that just a few people working together can make a significant impact in helping the community. Great job fourth grade!

book FairThis year’s Book Fair was a HUGE success! The theme was: Book Fair FIESTA and we kicked off the event by encouraging students to read at least 20 minutes each night throughout the week. Students earned tickets for reading with a chance to have their names drawn for a special prize. Congratulations to the many winners!

In addition to reading, Mr. Hug organized a classroom door decorating contest to help us celebrate! And, Celebrate we did! It was so fun seeing the many ideas displayed! (Additional pictures can be viewed on the Whipple web page.) The winning class was treated to a TACO FIESTA!

Aside from all the fun and selling of lots of books, monies were also collected for our Scholastic Service Project: One for Books. The project is set up where Scholastic matches the change brought in and uses it to buy books for needy students. As always our Whipple families jumped at the opportunity to ‘pay it forward’!

Encouraging reading outside of school is top priority at Whipple. We want to thank our fabulous librarian Donna Wise and our many volunteers, especially Patty Conrad who organized and facilitated this huge event!

technology NewsIt’s been an exciting year in the Technology Lab. We are constantly amazed at what students can learn and retain. Below is a quick summary of some of the technical skills that your children learned. Once these skills were mastered, we were able to develop projects that reinforced what they learned in the lab and in the classroom.

Kindergarten - How to use a mouse, computer parts, opening and navigating an internet browser (Google Chrome), drag and drop, keyboard familiarity, and typing their names and sentences (with proper capitalization and “end marks”).

1st Grade - Keyboarding (yes, with their little hands on “home row”!); cut and paste; inserting, moving and sizing clip art images; and highlighting and formatting text (i.e., font size, color and shape).

2nd Grade - Using the internet for basic research and inserting the information into a timeline, create a water cycle diagram using shapes and text boxes in MS Word, concept of file structure in Windows Explorer for saving documents, and introduction to Google Drive and products.

3rd Grade - Introduction to Google Drive and products; using internet for more advanced research and creation of presentations; introduction to Chromebooks (thank you PTO!); creating and maintaining a journal; and developing a spreadsheet, complete with formulas!

4th Grade - Digital photography; communicating with an ePal using Google e-mail account; internet research and creation of presentations; spreadsheet creation with bar charts; brochure creation using MS Publisher; and script writing and video filming.

Impressive, isn’t it! Reminder: if you have access to a computer/device with internet connectivity, your children can continue to practice many of the skills they’ve learned this year by going to the Whipple Portal. It can be accessed either from the Quick Link section on the Whipple website or directly at http://guest.portaportal.com/whipple. Once there, the kids know what to do!

Girls on the runWe are wrapping up another terrific season of Girls On The Run. This was the fifth year that this wonderful running program has been here in Stark County. The first year there were a total of 60 girls who participated; of which Watson was a part of. It has grown to over 600 girls and 44 schools that are now using the program. The girls learn so much more than just how to run a 5K. The program teaches self-confidence, strategies to use in uncomfortable situations, the importance of community and life lessons to use for many years. Girls On The Run and Perry Pride- a winning combination!

Watson teachers recognizedThe District Autism Team was created this year as a group charged with increasing autism awareness in the school setting, assisting teachers and staff members in working with students who have autism, and creating continuing education opportunities for our Perry family.

Many schools participated in art projects for the purpose of creating awareness in their buildings for autism awareness month. On April 2, the entire district participated in wearing blue. At PHS, the news team read off a fact about autism each day of the month, and staff members read about different supports and interventions weekly. The Team was invited to speak at the Perry Township Rotary meeting in April about the DAT’s goals as well as transitioning into the workplace.

Watson Elementary School became “Change Bandits” for the 10th year as part of 98.1 WKDD’s Have a Heart, Do Your Part Radiothon to benefit Akron Children’s Hospital. Watson students donated their piggy bank money, loose change and even some birthday money to help kids in need. The whole school became miracle makers as each classroom tried to raise the most money. Mrs. Rochford’s kindergarten, Mrs. Eisenbrei’s 3rd grade, and Mrs. Hamstra’s 2nd grade were the top three classes. Mrs. Eisenbrei’s 3rd grade class created a Crayon Factory and sold fun shaped recycled crayons for 25¢ during lunch. The school had two Bake Sales, Face Painting for $1, and Jeans Days with a donation for staff members. Pizza lunches with a favorite staff member were also raffled off to the students who donated. Many students became involved by making their own collection jar and asking for donations from family and friends. Watson students also collected 192 boxes of Valentines for the patients to pass out to their family, friends, and staff at the hospital.

On Saturday, February 15, Watson presented Akron Children’s Hospital with a check for over $4,000! It was quite a celebration as many people were amazed that an elementary school of less than 400 students could raise so much money for other kids. This brings their 10-year total donation to Akron Children’s Hospital to over $30,000, every penny of which goes directly to patient care.

Watson Elementary knows how truly blessed we all are to have such an amazing facility so close to home, as everyone has or knows of someone who has been touched by this miracle making hospital. It’s all about Kids Helping Kids and Watson Elementary, again, had a heart, and did their part for the kids at Akron Children’s.

Change bandits

Art ShowWatson’s Art Show took place on March 20. The theme for this year, “ART IS…,” focused on the Elements of Art – LINE, SHAPE, COLOR, TEXTURE, VALUE, SPACE, and FORM. Each grade level completed art projects based on one or more of those elements. The night was a huge success! Student art filled the hallway bulletin boards, make-and-take tables were a popular spot in the gym, and an artsy photo op was available. Kids completed a scavenger hunt for prizes, there was a “Dynamic Doodle” table, and a crowd favorite, “Edible Art” – make your own ice cream sundae sculptures! It was a fun-filled hour and a half for the whole family!
