A new Sunday School study led by Mary and Scott Hime will start February 12th at 9 a.m. in the Café’.
The 7-week study will use a book entitled Body Life by Ray Steadman, the author that wrote the book on Job we studied last Fall. Ray Steadman will show us how to recapture the vigor and authenticity of the early church—a radical body of enthusiastic believers who spread the Word of God throughout the world! This book, considered a classic by many, brings you challenging questions that make Body Life both personal and
practical. The book is available on Kindle, or let the Hime’s know you want a book ($6.50), or just come to the weekly study. Join us Sunday morning for fellowship, and thought-provoking study.

1. 2016 Year End Giving Reports. During the month of February the tote containing
the reports will be in the vestibule on Sunday mornings and in the church office on
weekdays.
2. The church’s online activity calendar is now hi-tech. It is linked to my computer
so any changes I make are simultaneously reflected on the online version. PLUS
viewers have access to the entire year, not just the current month and it is viewable
by day, week or month.

Mo Ranch or Bust! That's the traditional call when the Youth of FPC Rockport head to their Mid-Winter Conference
each January. Four of our own kids, Jake Parr, Karlee Friebele, Paige Heller, and Madison Myers, and three of their friends, Emily Schultz, Paige Torres, and Caylor Nesloney loaded into
the van along with lots of snacks, snuggly pillows, and suitcases on Friday, January 20, and hit the road with Kelly McNeely behind the wheel.
This year's theme was “Don't Worry-Seek the Kingdom”
based on Matthew 6:25-34
After checking in and getting settled in our dorm room, we had time to check out the stars, especially the Milky Way before heading to the Opening Session. The kids played games and
met some new friends and caught up with friends from last year for about an hour. Next came singing and our favorite energizers! Even the first timers quickly got into the dance
movements and singing. The evening ended with the Keynote Speaker's talk about not worrying. Kelly's favorite part was when she said, “It's not me saying, 'Don't worry;' it's Jesus!”

Matthew 6:33 “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

The kids kept a journal during the weekend and here are some of the things they wrote:
Karlee - “I am thankful that I have the chance to go learn some more about God while having fun with everybody! I liked that once we got to Small Group, we had a connection to God automatically.”
Paige T. - “I am thankful that I'm had the opportunity to go to Mo Ranch with my best friend, Paige H. and to have a bonding session with God.
Madison - “I am thankful for my family and friends. I am lucky to have a loving church and a great education.”
Paige H. - “I think my favorite part was Small Group because we got to know
different people.”
Emily - “I had so much fun making new friends even though they were all boys!”
Caylor - “Thank you for letting me come this weekend! I met a lot of people and also had a lot of fun! I hope I can come back next year!”
Jake - “I had just received some news from school that upset me, and the retreat
was just what I needed.”
It's amazing that we are at Mo Ranch for less than 48 hours and the time seems to go by sooooo fast! Yet we find ourselves saying stuff like, “Remember the other night when...” which

Program Committee - Meeting Report
The Program Committee, made up of Kelly McNeely, Scott Hime, and Tom Jaggard, held its regular meeting at 4:30 on Wednesday, January 11, 2017.
We are pleased to report last month's "Minute for Mission" resulted in a remarkable improvement in the Christmas Joy Offering received a week before Christmas when compared to the last five years. THANK YOU Tom and thanks to everyone who participated by donating to the offering. $1,256 was collected. $756 was deposited here and then transferred to Mission Presbytery. The remaining amount was mailed directly to PC(USA). Previous years collection results: 2015: $405 2014: $338 2013: $610 2012: $425 2011: $643 January’s “Minute for Mission” focus was on the Souper Bowl of Caring presented by Tom Jaggard. Donations made to the Souper Bowl of Caring on or before February 5 will be sent to the San Antonio campus of Presbyterian Children's Home and Services. This is the home of their “Transitional Living Program” which helps young women facing challenges and difficult times of transition by providing a safe residential environment in which they can grow, increase live skills, and achieve self- sufficiency. A written version of Tom's presentation is printed in this edition of Pres -by-lines. On January 18, Wednesday Night Supper and Study had Charlie back for the first time and also 14 new people! John and Nina Dennis and friends made a delicious dinner and dessert. The lessons are about our less familiar feast days and their connection to the Old Testament. Thanks to the financial support of our Church Family, seven Youth Group members attended the Mid-Winter Conference at Mo Ranch with Kelly from Friday-Sunday, January 20-22.
Members of the Program Committee would like to make it more obvious that Community Table is a Christian Outreach Ministry. We plan to make a hand-out, much like the one that is available at Christmas time, and keep it on hand every week. The header would say, “Community Table is provided with the funds from and support of these churches and community groups.” Then it would list the name, contact information, and times of services for the 7 churches. It will also mention the Lions and Rotary Clubs. We welcome your feedback on this plan, and Kelly will

Mission Statement
This month's Minute for Mission focuses on lending our to support to
Presbyterian Children’s Homes and Services. This far reaching program with
the long name is often called P – CHAS for short. For 114 years they have
been heeding Jesus’ call to care for children and families in need. They help children and families move from
despair to hope, equipping each child and parent to reshape their future in ways previously unimagined. With
faithful support from numerous individuals, congregations and foundations, they will continue to fulfill their
mission, serving over 3,400 children and families in need each year.
Their work includes:
Helping children heal so they can build healthy relationships with their families.
Helping children succeed in education so the world of opportunity and possibility opens before them. AND...
Giving parents, grandparents and other caretakers the resources and skills they need to ensure a stable
future for themselves and those in their care.
For the next two weeks and especially on February 5, for the Souper Bowl of Caring, we will ask for donations
that we will send to the Transitional Living Program at the San Antonio campus of P-CHAS. Our donations will
allow them to offer nutritious food to the children as well as grocery shopping and food preparation classes for
30 adults who live there.
Here's an important note: To ensure that your donation is applied as you intend for a special
collection, please makes checks payable to FPC and note Souper Bowl of Caring or PCHAS on the memo
line.
PCHAS has a great website at texas.pchas.org. I hope you will visit it to learn
more about the Transitional Living Program located under the “Our Programs”
tab, and the many ways PCHAS serves the Lord by caring for children and
families in need.

2017 Easter Cantata
A Contemporary Tenebrae Service
Derived from the Latin word for “shadows,” tenebrae refers to a worship service designed to
recreate the emotional and spiritual aspects of the passion story. We Remember Calvary is a
choral work that uses both traditional and contemporary hymns, worship songs, scripture
reading and narration to paint a vivid and moving picture of Christ’s last day and his journey to
the cross. The overall tone is one of reflection and worship. This 35-minute work includes
lighting and extinguishing candles throughout the service, creating a dramatic Good Friday effect
so that, by the end, the congregation is in total darkness.
I invite/welcome/encourage anyone who would like to sing this Cantata with the Choir to
join us Wednesday nights at 7:00 pm in the Sanctuary for a 30-minute rehearsal. In addition to a play book, each participant receives a part-dominant CD to assist in learning
the words and music.
My only request is a commitment to attend at least 3 rehearsals plus the final rehearsal.

A “pull tab” board will have options for everyone, not just the chili cooks. You non-chili makers can supply sides like chips, desserts, cornbread or condiments such as guacamole, onions and cheese.

underwent brain surgery Friday, January 6. Allen Beebe, from McQueeny, Texas, has been diagnosed with lung cancer. Jackie
McCorquodale, Veronika Camehl’s friend, and a recent newlywed, was diagnosed Monday, January 9, with a small mass on her
pancreas. A biopsy is scheduled.
Celebrations: Charlie is scheduled to return to the pulpit next Sunday, January 22!

Douglass have been hospitalized in Houston.

2. Circle Bible Study will meet February 14 at 10:00 am in the parlor. We are on Chapter 5 of
Judy Yates Siker’s study “Who is Jesus? What a Difference a Lens Makes.” All women are

3. Quilters will meet February 21 at 9:00am in the upstairs Sewing & Quilting Room to make
Prayer Comforters.
4. Castaways:
A. FPC’s shift days are every Monday, 8:00am to 3:00pm, when we staff and manage the
store and Thursdays, 8am to 11am, when we do the marking. There is plenty to do
either day and the jobs are easy to learn! We need more helpers on Monday afternoons -
even if you can only spare an hour. Please join us!!! Also, please donate on the days we
are at the store. We need big ticket items like furniture.
B. Pulling has been changed to the last day of the month. In Feb., it will be Tues.,Feb. 28 at 3
pm.
5. Su Casa still needs new delivery people.
6. Good Samaritans is looking for help. If you are available, contact Janet Gaskamp or just go by
and offer your help. Remember Good Sam’s Sunday is the first Sunday of each month to
bring food items or cash. Janet reported GS needs help with 7 a.m. pick-up of produce and
other groceries from HEB and Walmart on Mon., Wed., Fri., Sat. mornings and sorting the
groceries from Sams on Mon. and Fri from 8:30-9:30.

8. Neet Feet- Pati Vincent reported that we have purchased 7 pairs of shoes.

10. Cluster Report- Mo Ranch Women’s Conference will be March 24-26 with Grace Presbyterian

11. Quilting Report- Barb Goodlock reported that 10 prayer quilts were completed in December. For
the Presbyterian Children’s Home, we made 9 adult quilts and 11 children’s quilts. We have no
graduating seniors, but PCH will let us know how many graduating seniors they have.
12. Volunteer Appreciation Dinner has been set for Thursday, February 23 at 5:30.

WHO IS JESUS? Lesson Five - Those of you who participated in our earlier studies of
Paul and the early church are going to enjoy this lesson. Paul has a very strong vision of
Jesus that he wanted to share with Jews and Greeks groups alike. The KEY SCRIPTURE for this lesson is 1
Corinthians 1: 18 – 25. It will be fun to see how Paul’s picture (LENS) compares to
that of the other Bible authors we have studied. More scriptures will be listed in the
Lesson itself.
Have you ever wondered how your idea of who Jesus is, differs from your friend’s. Does
that matter in the way you live your faith each day? We invite you to join us as we study
the lens of Jesus as presented in 1 Corinthians. Our study journey began in Mark, then
Matthew, Luke and John. This month we examine Jesus through the words of an apostle,
not a disciple. Nancy Bolks will bring her great insight to the subject as she leads this
study.
Please consider taking an HOUR each month for Bible Study. Read the selected Bible
background, and the additional scriptures to deepen your knowledge and faith, then join us for discussion of
how Paul’s words describe Jesus. We will compare this lens to that of Matthew, Mark, Luke & John using the
points put together in our previous studies. We have the study guides, just bring your favorite
Bible and TOGETHER we will explore the Question: Who is this Jesus we worship each day?

WHO IS JESUS?
2017, kickoff breakfast for the Presbyterian
Men’s Group this morning. We had 14 men attend the breakfast, and the meal
consisted of biscuits, sausage gravy, scrambled eggs, and fruit. There was a
devotional, given by Charlie Schuler, and we held a short business meeting
(discussion items listed below).
I would like to thank Mike Revel, John Marlatt, Pete Chamberlain, Michael Henderson, and
Charlie Schuler for helping me setup for the breakfast, cook for the group, and clean up
afterwards. Everything was delicious!!
1. Jad Smith gave a financial report.
2. Larry Cobb suggested getting a group together to attend the Mo-Ranch Men’s
Conference the first week of May.
3. Flagpole discussion
A. John Watters and Michael Henderson will consider what we need to get the
flagpole installed in the parking lot.
B. Flags are a major expense for the men’s group, around $300 for the set
(American, Texan, and Presbyterian) every few months.
4. Fundraisers for the Group
A. Al DeGayner will research boat trailer that could be sold
B. Possibly making and selling BBQ plates to raise funds
5. Pete Chamberlain suggested all in attendance bring someone to next month’s
meeting.
Next month’s meeting will be Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at 7am. The main
course will be pancakes and bacon, and Al DeGayner volunteered to give the
devotional. Please let me know if you have any suggestions for next month or ideas for
improvement.
Share this with any men who were not in attendance but might be interested in
what they missed. We want to get everyone included one way or another.

5 Fun Ways to Keep Your Sobriety Intact as a Single Parent on Valentine’s Day

If you’re a single parent in addiction recovery every day has its own challenges, but Valentine’s Day can be especially difficult. Whether it’s just a reminder of being on your own or a night you used to spend celebrating with drugs or alcohol, there are all kinds of painful emotions it can evoke. Fortunately, there are
plenty of options for having a great Valentine’s Day with your kids without compromising your sobriety, budget, or schedule. Here are just a few ideas.
Go out and play
Round up the kids and go for a game of putt-putt golf, laser tag, or for older kids, paintball. You can indulge in a night that revolves around innocent fun, plus you’ll get to let loose and just enjoy your children. If you think your family needs to burn off some extra energy, make it something especially active like an
evening at the trampoline park. If going out isn’t an option, create your own mini golf course or turn out the lights and play flashlight tag in the house.
Have game night
A night of board games is a great way to bring everyone together. You can play several rounds of the group favorite, or let everyone choose one and play
multiple games throughout the night. Keep the atmosphere light and friendly, especially if there are significant age gaps between children. Have some of your favorite Valentine’s treats, and move the party out of your traditional board game spot, like having a picnic in the living room. Don’t forget the hot cocoa and
extra marshmallows!
Have a dance party
If your gang loves music, crank up the tunes and have your own Valentine’s dance party in the living room! You can create a love-themed playlist, have each person suggest their favorites, or simply see what comes on the radio. Maybe even have a dance contest with awards for most creative, most energetic,
silliest dance move, etc. Make it extra special by decorating with some old twinkle lights, and have flashlights handy for a spotlight effect. Boogie together,
break into solos, and just dance away your everyday stress.
Conduct an experiment
If your kids love to learn, or if you’re hoping to inspire them to, try an at-home science experiments. You can choose one project for the entire night, pick out
different ones for each child based on what they’re interested in, or let them decide what to try. There are endless options to meet any ability level, age, interest, and many that only call for items you can find at home. Even better, there are mess-free options so you won’t be left with a disaster at the end of
the night! Make sure you take every opportunity to ask your kids about what they’re discovering and draw conclusions. Show them how fun learning can be!
Work on a family project
Maybe you’ve always loved putting together model airplanes and want to share your passion. You could help them create their own terrarium or make an
indoor herb garden. Maybe you have some clay and want their help in making a dish for your keys or jewelry. Create a homemade bed for Fluffy. Make it a project you can all collaborate on, and ideally one that will allow them to see the fruits of their efforts daily. Every time you see the completed product, you’ll
be able to reflect on the wonderful family time spent together and your kids will have something to show off to visitors.
Your recovery has made it through plenty of obstacles, but Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be one. Focus on the love you have for your children, and on
finding a unique way to spend time showing them you care. You just might find yourself looking forward to next year and a new opportunity for family time!
