Deep into his ministry, Jesus asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” Their response was varied, some indicating that he was a revisiting of some particular prophet from the past. Then he pressed them further by asking, “Who do you say that I am?” here, Peter speaks up by indicating that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of the living God. As the church, we too recognize that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of the living God. This proclamation gives us our purpose as Christians, baptized and marked with the cross of Christ, and fed and sustained by his body and blood. But we may also ask, “Who do people say that we are?” Our collective identity as the church, the body of Christ, is defined mostly from within. That is, we understand ourselves as sisters and brothers in Christ from a “believing” perspective. We identify ourselves as the church from perspectives gained from shared beliefs and practices within the collective history of the church and her traditions and rituals. But the question I posed is to ask how we are viewed and understood from the outside, from the perspective of the wider community and world that is not self-defined by the church’s history of beliefs and practices. That is, does the wider community see us as we see ourselves? Are they able to see the presence of Christ through us? Do they witness any Christ-like characteristics in our actions? Are they interested in what we have to offer through and because of our faith? Or are they unable to recognize any distinctive Christian quality

PASTOR’S PARAGRAPHS

WHO DO PEOPLE SAY THAT WE ARE?

Or are they unable to recognize any distinctive Christian quality

in us, that is, do we just seem to blend in to the ways of the world? Or even, has the world around us grown tired and disinterested in our Christian witness or lack thereof? Quite possibly we should understand that what happens within the church is but a dress rehearsal for what is to happen outside the church. What we say and do in our worship and ministry life within the church need be visible to the whole world around us. Who do people say that we are? All depends on how clearly and frequently they can see Christ in us.

“PENNIES fROm HEAVEN TO THOSE IN NEED” There will be a container in the hallway marked “Pennies from Heaven to Those in Need”. This is similar to the container we had a number of years ago where anyone can put loose change. As the name suggests, the money collected will go to someone in need. Questions? LEAF BLANKETS

Leaves are falling, soft as snowflakes, Red and yellow, gold and brown;

The breeze laughs gaily in the treetops, Shaking all the color down.

Leaves are covering the gardens

As my blanket covers me. When cold winter comes, the flowers

Will be warm as warm can be. ~Irene B. Crofoot

HARVEST HOME

The Harvest Home Celebration is a tradition that goes back many years. Years ago, our congregation was made up largely of farmers. They liked to gather in the fall for a big celebration to give thanks for their harvest. Today, we don't have as many farmers, but still like to gather to give thanks for the harvest, for family & friends, and for God's many blessings. We are continuing this tradition on October 1. On this special Sunday the sanctuary will be decorated with glories of the harvest: Pumpkins – Gourds - Indian Corn – Corn Ears - Corn Stalks - Fresh Fruit – Fresh Vegetables - Fall Leaves – Fresh or Dried Flowers - Home Canned Items - Crates - Baskets

If you can provide any of the above items to help us do that, please have them here by 10:00 a.m. on September 30 when we will decorate the sanctuary for Harvest Home. Be sure to have your name on all items, so they can be returned to you. Also, if you would be available to lend a hand with decorating the sanctuary, your help would be exceedingly welcomed.

A collection of non-perishable food and monetary donations for Hope’s Haven to help those in need will be received at this service. We have all been truly blessed and we ask that you share your blessings with those who are less fortunate by bringing a monetary donation and/or non-perishable food items along to worship on the 1st. We will collect the donations during worship.

We invite you to join us for this Celebration of Thanksgiving as we give thanks for the blessings, gifts, and the harvest we have received this year from God.

BLANKET SUNDAY October 1

Think about how comforting and warm a blanket feels when it is wrapped around you. Now, think how comforting and necessary it becomes if you were experiencing the aftermath of a hurricane or disaster. What if you did not even own a blanket and your very survival was in doubt. How lucky most of us are never to experience that kind of pain. A simple truth: Ordinary things -- things that we often take for granted like blankets, clean water, education, tents, garden tools and seeds -- can make a world of difference for people devastated by tragedy, as well as those working to build a better life for themselves and their communities.

On Sunday, October 1, we will receive a special offering for Lutheran World Relief. For every $5.00 collected, Lutheran World Relief will purchase and distribute a blanket to people who suffer from war or natural disasters all around the world. Special envelopes will be available for your gift (or you can use your regular envelope and mark “Blankets” on the designated gift line. Your donation will make a positive impact upon a person in America and around the world. Donations of new and like-new blankets measuring approximately 60” X 80” for LWR are also welcome – they send these blankets out just like they do the quilts (no electric blankets or afghans please). Blankets are a gift of love that keeps on giving. Your quilt or donation can deliver that same message ― of God’s ever-present love and care ― to someone in need.

CHOIR PRACTICE RESUMES

Are you aware of how many times the Bible uses the word “sing” or derivative thereof? Countless, countless times. Example: “Come into his presence with singing!” (Ps 100:2). And “…be filled with the spirit addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs. Singing and making melody to the Lord with all your heart. (Eph 5:19) Singing, then, is a very important part of worship. Our choir members realize that truth as they take their places in the choir loft. They are giving of themselves, a gift of love and devotion, by using their voices in a way that meets God’s approval. How about you? Is this something you could do? No special talent is needed, just a desire to “sing praises to God.” Not too many additions have taken place in choir personnel in recent years, although there is room for growth. As the choir begins its new season, won’t you swell its growth by becoming part of this ministry that helps us fill the sanctuary with beautiful music! CHANCEL CHOIR

Director Paula Christy invites any and all persons who are interested in singing in the adult choir at Christ’s United to get in touch with her. Choir rehearsals take place after church on the Sundays the choir sings (1st, 4th, and if there is a 5th). No problem if you miss some of these days – we appreciate your presence any time. Rehearsals will begin after the service on September 10. Talk to Paula for more information. CHILDREN’S CHOIR There are no plans for a children’s choir at this time.

PRAYER CHAIN

The Prayer Chain is a group of men and women of Christ’s United who pray for the concerns and requests of Christ’s United’s members and friends. Someone in need of prayer calls the church office and requests to be put on the Prayer Chain. Each member of the Prayer Chain then receives either a phone call or an email notifying them of a prayer request. The prayer chain member receiving the phone call then calls one other person and so on down the list. Those notified by email do not have to pass it on. Would you be willing to pray for someone in need? It is reassuring to know that you are supported by the prayers of others and not alone with your concern. If you would like to be a member of the Prayer Chain, fill out the following and put it in the offering plate or on Margie’s desk. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Update on Doug Gemberling 8/22/17

Hi Marge, we have just left Wills eye hospital for Doug's eye check up , everything is looking good, he still has a few stiches inside but all well, they are still waiting for the biopsy results they said they can take about 2 months or longer to get them, we now have to make appointments for him to have his artificial eye fitted, he also has to have liver and cancer screening twice a year to make sure it don't spread or come back, please pass this info on to Pastor John for me please.

Thanks Pearl Gemberling

Upper Susquehanna Synod Events Calendar

Liberia Committee Visitor September 3 On Sunday, September 3rd, the synod’s Liberia Committee is pleased to welcome Abel Learwellie back to our synod for a time a renewing friendships and conversation. Abel will share updates about the work which the Lutheran Training Institute (LTI) is doing, especially with youth, and the current challenges that LTI faces. This gathering will take place at the Synod Office on Reitz Blvd., Lewisburg, beginning at 2:30 p.m. All are welcome. “God’s Work. Our Hands.” Sunday, September 10 This day of service is an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America – one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor. The suggested date for the 2017 dedicated day of service is Sunday, September 10. Mark your calendars today! If your congregation cannot participate on this date, please consider another day. Service activities offer an opportunity for us to explore one of our most basic convictions as Lutherans: that all of life in Jesus Christ – every act of service, in every daily calling, in every corner of life – flows freely from a living, daring confidence in God’s grace. You work every day to make your community a better place. Let us continue doing this work together in 2017! Access resources to guide your congregation’s planning, promotion and more here: http://elca.org/Resources/GWOH-Sunday.

Late fees go into effect on February 15. The gathering will be held in Houston, TX, from June 27- July 1, 2018 with MYLE and the tAble being from June 24-27. Congregations should start to identify youth, leaders, and a primary contact person. You can sign up for gathering news at www.elca.org/gathering. Now is also the time to set a budget and begin fundraising efforts. The gathering staff suggests budgeting between $900-$1200 to get youth to and from Texas. This includes a range in the cost of hotel rooms of $99-$150. On July 15, financial aid registration opened on the Gathering website. No congregation is too small to send kids. The average size group at the Gathering is 3-7 kids. If you are concerned about not having enough youth, you can also join in with a nearby congregation. More questions? Want more information? Check out www.elca.org/YouthGathering, join the Facebook group USS ELCA Youth Gathering Leaders (for adult leaders only) or contact Charlene Rineer at [email protected] or 717-880-2872. Participate in the Social Statement on Human Rights As you hopefully are aware, the Draft of an ELCA Social Message on Human Rights has been available on the ELCA website since the beginning of July for reading and response. The comment period runs until August 31. The Draft is available online only, but it can be downloaded for review and there are two primary ways to provide a response: 1) Fill out the online response form, found there. 2) Send comments via email to [email protected]. Both will be shared with the Theological Discernment staff and the consulting group preparing the message. In early September the revision work will be finalized and the Proposed Message will be shared with members of the Conference of Bishops and Church Council for review and then brought to the Council’s November meeting for consideration. If you know of anyone who might be interested in this kind of ministry, LAMPA would love to talk to them. To see the kind of work LAMPa is currently doing feel free to check out our website: http://www.lutheranadvocacypa.org. To volunteer, contact Travis at [email protected]. NOTES OF APPRECIATION

“Volunteers are gold”. Volunteers are the most valuable commodities in ministry. Without them, nothing would get done in our churches. We are fortunate to have the kind of dedicated people that we do. We are truly blessed by God and enriched in our fellowship by the many people of this congregation who volunteer their time and their talent in small and large ways for the benefit of this church and for the advancement of the gospel of Christ in this place. Do you know anyone who should be given a pat on the back and a “Thank You” for the contributions they make in and around the church? Let Margie know.

THANK YOU TO… …Everyone who helped in any way with the fair stand, be it organizers, committee members, cooks, servers, cashiers, bakers, donors, clean-up, dishwashers, or diners. …Dave Bickhart, Maurice Clouser, Eugene Hassinger & Cliff Valentine for power washing the front of the church. …Maurice Clouser & Eugene Hassinger for cleaning out the basement. …Sharon Denisen for filling in as pianist this summer …Dave Bickhart, Maurice Clouser & Cliff Valentine for weeding around the church …Pastor John, Greg Shuck, Barry Spangler & Idella Zimmerman for putting labels in the new pew Bibles CULC Members, Thank you for your cards and prayers during our time of sorrow. Both parties have their good times and bad times at different times. Good when they are out. Bad

when they are in.

Everything is funny as long as it is happening to somebody else.

Golf is wonderful exercise. You can stand on your feet for hours, watching somebody else putt.

Good judgment comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgment.

If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.

If you live life right, death is a joke as far as fear is concerned.

Income tax has made more liars out of the American people than golf.

It must be nice to belong to some legislative body and just pick money out of the air.

Nations are just like individuals. Loan them money and you lose their friendship.

One way to solve the traffic problem would be to keep all the cars that aren’t paid for off the road.

Our public men are speaking every day on something, but they ain’t saying anything.

Outside of traffic, there is nothing that has held this country back as much as committees.

People that pay for things never complain. It's the guy you give something to that you can't please.

Somebody is always telling us in the papers how to prevent war. There is only one way in the world to prevent war, and that is, for every nation to tend to its own business.

The Lord so constituted everybody that no matter what color you are you require the same amount of nourishment

We don’t seem to be able to check crime, so why not legalize it and then tax it out of business.

The more that learn to read the less learn how to make a living. That's one thing about a little education. It spoils you for actual work. The more you know the more you think somebody owes you a living.

The platform will always be the same, promise everything, deliver nothing.

The quickest way to double your money is to fold it and put it back in your pocket.

The road to success is dotted with many tempting parking spaces.

We are always yapping about the 'Good Old Days' and how we look back and enjoy it, but I tell you there is a lot of hooey to it. There is a whole lot of all our past lives that wasn't so hot.

We can’t all be heroes, because somebody has to sit on the curb and clap as they go by.

We don’t have to worry about anything. No nation in the history of the world was ever sitting as pretty. If we want anything, all we have to do is go and buy it on credit.

You shake a slogan at an American and it's just like showing a hungry dog a bone.
