Stewardship Notes:

We will soon begin a Stewardship study and worship emphasis based on

Jesus’ words, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be

also” (Matthew 6:21). We will be thinking together, and praying together,

about the many ways our treasure (time, talents, energy, money) affects our

hearts, and considering how challenges in our personal lives affect our relationships with people and

with God.

For four Wednesday nights, beginning October 29, Supper and Study will

be devoted to the following texts and topics:

Week 1: Where Is Your Treasure? (Matthew 6:19-21)

Week 2: The Problem with Two Masters (Matthew 6:24)

Week 3: Giving Your Treasure Back to God (Matthew 6:1-6)

Week 4: Do Not Worry About a Thing (Matthew 6:25-34)

Sunday worship in November will focus on the same texts and themes, and on November 23, we

will have the opportunity to make our personal commitments of giving to First Presbyterian Church for

2015. Commitment cards will be circulated to all, and will also be available on Sunday mornings, so we

can all participate in the Stewardship Dedication Service on the 23rd.

Please continue to pray for the guidance and inspiration of the Holy

Spirit as we consider together how to respond to God’s generous provision for

all our needs through the mission and ministry of our church.

On October 5, we will observe World Communion Sunday and receive the

Peacemaking Offering. On this day we join with Christians around the world to

celebrate the unity we find at the Table of the Lord. We also receive the

Peacemaking Offering to support the efforts of our congregation and denomination

to spread the peace of Christ. Our congregation will use 25% of the Offering for

local activities. The other 75% will help our partners in Mission

Presbytery, Synod of the Sun, and the General Assembly as they work

on behalf of God’s peacemaking throughout the world.

Adult Sunday School:

The Adult class is reading and discussing “Mere Christianity” by C.S. Lewis. All

are welcome to join the study, which meets in the Café area each Sunday at 9:30 A.M.

(Our book supply is exhausted, but it is available online and in most bookstores)

Texts and Sermons:

October 05 Exodus 20:1–4, 7–9, 12–20 “What Is The Story?”

Peace, This Joy”

October 19 Matthew 22:15–22 “The Things That Are

God’s”

Church Nursery Attendant Needed:

Two Little Boys: After a hardy rainstorm filled all the potholes in the streets and alleys, a young moth-er watched her two little boys playing in the puddles through her kitchen win-dow. The older of the two, a five year old lad, grabbed his sibling by the back of his head and shoved his face into the water hole. As the boy recovered and stood laughing and dripping, the mother ran to the yard in a panic. "Why on earth did you do that to your little brother?!" she asked the older boy in anger. "We were just playing 'church' mommy," he said. "I was just baptizing him.....in the name of the Father, the Son and in...the hole-he-goes. "

Because SUNDAY, OCTOBER 12 is

PASTOR APPRECIATION DAY

...in honor of Charlie we chose ITALIAN pot luck as the theme for this month’s

Fellowship Luncheon...AND in recognition of him on Pastor

Appreciation Day we are inviting the congregation to

say: GRAZIE, CHARLIE!

Of course, there are many ways to show your appreciation, so just follow your heart. However, in the weeks leading up to the luncheon the congregation will be given an opportunity to write a note detailing something memorable that you appreciate about Charlie (ie: a visit to the hospital, outstanding Sunday School or Supper & Study lesson, or how he makes you laugh and cry during the same sermon, and so on). We also invite you to stand up during the luncheon to tell Charlie, and all of us, something that you appreciate about your pastor. After the luncheon, we will make a special collection of your notes to give to him.

So mark the date, time and place: Sunday, October 12, after

Worship, in the Fellowship Hall. Bring an Italian dish to share

and join us as we express our appreciation for Charlie’s many

years of dedication, wise leadership, inspiring messages, and

insightful counsel.

And remember: “Italian is more than just pasta…”

REMEMBERING SEPTERMER’S FELLOWSHIP LUNCHEON:

In celebration and recognition of 20 years as head of our Music Department, the Fellowship Committee hosted September’s Fellowship Lunch in honor of Yvonne Jaggard. Through an assortment of ways, expressions of gratitude and appreciation were offered acknowledging her unending dedication; deep love of music; long-standing patience directing and rehearsing a variety of choirs; endless hours rehearsing musical plays and cantatas; the unknown time spent searching for, selecting, ordering and scheduling preludes, postludes, choral anthems, special music, the musical plays and cantatas; not to mention attending meetings, practicing the weekly hymns, playing the piano or organ when needed

… and the list goes on.

MEET NEW MEMBER …. ALISSA SPEARS:

I am completely overjoyed by the kindness I have been shown by this

wonderful Church. I became most awestruck with the “community” of this

church when our family was given a blanket in our time of need. Lochlan

has epilepsy. It has taken me a long time to say that sentence out loud. If

you had asked us at the time we experienced his first seizures, what I

needed, I would have said nothing, but Veronika knew what I needed,

and she/you made it happen. I looked at every knot and cried with joy

and gratitude. So, thank you.

I was born and raised in Australia and made Rockport my home in 2000.

My grandmother, Jane Dunsworth, was living here at that time, and I lived

with her for a short while. I attended real estate school and started a career in real estate just

two days after I stepped off the plane. It’s been almost 15 years that I am a Broker Associate with

Lynn Johnson Realty, Inc. My parents, Butch & Alexis Engel are both residents of Rockport.

I met my husband Sam Spears, just shortly after my arrival and on December 9th, 2006 we were

married, by our very own Reverend Charlie Schuler. Sam was born and raised in Rockport, the

Son of Norman and Janice Spears. He went off to Texas A&M, College Station , and is now a

Financial Adviser with Edward Jones in Rockport.

We are grateful to have found Our Church. Thank you for the hugs and kindness that is always

shown.

See you Sunday!

“Notes” From the Music Director, Yvonne Jaggard

Hand Bell Choir is back and working diligently to learn a couple pieces. We’ve scheduled “Holy God, We Praise Your Name” arr. Bill Ingram as the Processional for October 26 and a perfect piece for November 23, the Sunday before Thanksgiving, titled “Praise and Thanks to God” arr. Carol A. Scheel as the Processional.

We have need for 2 more Hand Bell ringers to replace 2 who have had to drop out. We rehearse 30 minutes on Monday at 5:30. The only necessity is a commitment to attend practice as much as possible but most importantly be present for a scheduled performance to play your bell(s.) If this intrigues you, consider observing a rehearsal.

Chancel Choir We need more voices! Rehearsals are in the Sanctuary on Wednesday evenings at 7 o’clock. If you like music, especially singing, JOIN US for an enjoyable, relaxing hour of both!

September brought with it some much needed rain and our traditional worship service in our beautiful sanctuary. Worship at 11:00 will continue in the Sanctuary.

Due to Charlie’s illness early in September, Margot Whitaker from Parkway Presbyterian Church in Corpus Christi filled the pulpit Sunday, September 7, and the Session voted to delay the resumption of the 8:30 worship service until November.

Thank you to the following for donating flowers for the sanctuary in September: Dayne & Parkie Luce, Ingrid Little, Daniel & Gloria Garcia, and Don & Caro Jackson. Jim and Sally Reynolds celebrated the birth of their granddaughter, Reagan Norris, on September 17 by placing a rosebud on the communion table on September 21st.

In September, Ingrid Little and Pati Vincent served as our head ushers. In October these responsibilities will be assumed by Joe and Peggy Bear.

The Worship Committee looks forward to seeing everyone in the Sanctuary at 11:00 am each Sunday as our regular schedule resumes … feel free to contact any of us if you have comments or suggestions. Members of this committee include Lois Atwood, Veronika Camehl, Mindy Durham, Holly Hamilton, Caro Jackson, Yvonne Jaggard, Charlie Schuler, Jad Smith, and Pati Vincent.

Community Table (continued)

THANKS to the following for your generosity in donating your Sanctuary flowers to The Community Table…. FLOWERS in the Fellowship Hall on Sunday, September 7, were given by Dayne and Parkie Luce to the

glory of God in honor and celebration of their 31st wedding anniversary on September 4. They were divided into 14 bud vases by a gifted volunteer from Holy Cross Lutheran Church who

transformed them into beautiful arrangements to grace the tables on September 9. EDITOR’S NOTE: Much to my regret and horror, I inadvertently deleted the pictures of the

Sunday floral arrangements and the rosebud table arrangements from my camera before saving a set for this article. I’m extremely disappointed to not share them with you as they were so beautiful!

FLOWERS IN THE SANCTUARY on Sunday, September 14, were given to the Glory of God by Rusty and Ingrid Little in ...

loving memory of friend and Gold Star Mother, Linda Sutton, celebration of Grandparent’s Day on September 9 (great holiday,) honor of Coylie Koelle’s 94th birthday on September 9, celebration of Bobby and JoAnn Little’s 62nd wedding anniversary September 10, celebration of Reagan Little’s birthday on September 29.

They were then donated to The Community Table to grace the tables at the September 16 meal hosted by St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, who had a volunteer who made them into stunning arrangements.

EDITOR’S NOTE: As the clean-up and closing process at the Community Table on both nights when the Luce and Little flowers were donated, volunteers began removing flowers from their vases and offering them to unsuspecting and very delighted diners. And so the beauty and aroma of flowers that graced the sanctuary on Sunday continued bring-ing happiness and joy…..

Ministering to others through Prayer and Prayer Comforters

The family of A.J. Viertel was blessed by the prayer blanket that we delivered to them. I know that Patsy will continue to be comforted by the blanket as she starts this new chapter in her life. I wanted to share what A.J. has meant to me. I've been a Christian all my life----but I became a better Christian after my life

was influenced by A.J. Viertel. My husband began his coaching career under A.J. in 1972. A.J. and his wife Patsy guided us through the ins and outs of being part of a “coaching family.” I always considered the Viertels close friends, and really discovered A.J.'s value when he invited us to the Rockport Gospel Festival to hear the Singing Men of South Texas. I knew that A.J. had a great voice and I was excited to hear him perform. I left that performance a transformed woman. I bought the groups' CD and wore it out playing it. I rediscovered my love for my Creator and my faith was renewed. My grandson wanted the CD played nightly as he was going to sleep---and the seeds of faith were planted in him also. A.J. has no concept of the many lives that he has touched. His legacy of faith will go on and on----even after his earthly body expires. A.J. will be missed by many. He “ran the race” with integrity and praise for his Creator. A.J. lost his battle with cancer on August 29, 2014---heaven's choir is richer now because of A.J.'s beautiful bass voice. Sing on, A.J., sing on! Nancy Miller 09/02/14

Coastal Bend Troop Support’s 10th annual

“Operation Fill a Stocking for our Deployed Troops ”

Dear Congregation,

It was my hope last year when I stored away all the material I use for this

project it wouldn’t be used again because all our kids would be home before the

holidays this year. Unfortunately, as evidenced by the list of deployed troops on

our Prayer Concerns, the names of church member’s sons, grandsons and

nephews are still on it. And so, here we go again….

Though the mailing list at Coastal Bend Troop Support (CBTS) is greatly

reduced from year’s past, down to a couple dozen, they continue mailing care

packages each and every month to our kids in harm’s way. For those men and women who won’t be home for

the holidays, the “elves” at the CBTS are gearing up for the 10th time to send a series of Thanksgiving and

Christmas holiday-themed care packages. And we here at First Presbyterian Church will, for the 7th time,

support them by participating in their “Operation Fill-a-Stocking for our Deployed Troops.”

Peggy Bear, who is a CBTS “elf” and assisting me this year, has made changes to procedures which will

make it much simpler and easier to participate. Just bring donated items to the Mission Room and deposit them

in the marked collection baskets. Peggy and the “elves” at the Troop Center will compile all we donate into

stocking boxes and ship them to the troops.

A list of suggested items follows, but I will share Peggy’s comment that the troops cherish cards and

letters more than anything. Veterans of all generations will probably agree, and for that reason we are also

providing Christmas cards and stationery for your use.

Suggested items: Christmas candies (store bought & packaged,) manicure kits-male & female, CDs

(everyday & Christmas,) DVDs (everyday & Christmas: comedy is good-No war movies,) computer

games, sports watch (all black band & face,) yoyos, nerf balls, hacky sac, small toys for stockings, socks

-male & female (boot style, black,) batteries (AA & AAAA,) stationery, note cards, packs of Christmas

cards, disposable cameras, word puzzle books, flashlights, book lights, over-the-forehead style.

The deadline is in November on a date to be announced in November’s newsletter.

As Coastal Bend Troop Support founder Carla Reed ALWAYS says “YOU are the ones who keep this

going. It takes us all and it's all for the troops.“

We thank you!

The Church Lady/Blue Star Mother FPC Member /Coastal Bend Troop Support “Elf,”

Beverly Jacobson Peggy Bear

P.S. Due to the drawdown of troops in Afghanistan, (but build up of “advisors” in Iraq,) there are fewer

females deployed though Coast Bend Troop Support still has a handful on their mailing list. For those who

donate female-themed items they will be shipped to Chaplains who will see to it they are distributed to women.

and troops who will NOT be ….

Church Family,

From the heart of my

husband and me, we desire

to attempt to express to you our gratefulness for

worshipping and serving the LORD with you!! You

have certainly made us to feel so much a part of

your fellowship – like we have known each other for

a very, very long time!! I have true praise in my

heart to the LORD for so graciously providing me

with this opportunity to serve in the area of music

which is my true heart of worship to HIM!

Thanks so much for an awesome first year of

serving here with you and we look forward to many

more!! How we love you all so much!

SANCTUARY FLOWERS

October 5 and 19 are available for sponsorship. To reserve a date, write your name on the calendar posted on the bulletin board by the Mission Room and notate the purpose (if any.)

ROSEBUD ON THE COMMUNION TABLE September 21 was in celebration of the birth of Mark and Tracy Reynolds’ newborn daughter, Reagan Norris, born Wednesday, September 17, in Arlington. Reagan was 18 inches long and weighed 6 pounds, 3.8 ounces.

Proud first time grand parents are Jim and

Sally Reynolds.

When God Whispers

The Man whispered, "GOD Speak To Me" And the Meadowlark sang. But the Man did not

hear.

So the man yelled, "GOD Speak To Me" And the thunder rolled across the sky.

But the Man did not hear.

The man looked around and said, "GOD Let Me See You" And a star shone brightly.

But the Man did not notice.

And the man shouted, "GOD show me a miracle"

And a life was born. But the Man did not know.

So, the man cried out in

despair. "Touch me GOD & let me know

you are here" And GOD reached down and touched the Man.

But the Man brushed away the butterfly,

and walked on.

Moral Of The Story: Don't miss out on a blessing because it

isn't packaged the way you expect.
