Ministering to/in the Digital Age
The MTM Mission
Is to train workers in and expose them to technology in support of mission and ministry in Lutheran congregations and schools
Is This Really True for Lutheran Schools?
• I don’t think so …
• Our first calling to those we serve is to share Jesus Christ as our Savior.
• This provides our schools a real advantage.
• We know our purpose; we know our destination.
Some Questions
• What’s your vision for yourself and your classroom?
• Where do see your classroom being a year from now?
• three years from now?• five years from now?
Vision
• Ken Blanchard and Jesse Stoner ask the following questions in their book, Full Steam Ahead, to help us develop our vision.– Who are you?– Where are you going?– How are you going to get there?

Systems for Schools
CUW
• Now offers a MS in Education –Educational Technology
• LCMS educators are able to do this Masters for about 1/3 the normal cost.
Writing Assignment
• Life Changing Experiences
• Could site examples like: Saul/Paul, Peter’s denial, Moses burning bush experience
• OR, you might show them a video like…
Paul Potts Video
• A shy guy who sells cell phones
• He wants to be an opera singer
• I encourage you to watch the body language and facial expressions of Paul, the judges, and the audience.
• Which introduction (verbal verses video) to an assignment like this do you think would be more motivating to your students?
• Why
Andrew Johnson
• He is another good video example of a thirteen year boy who gets bullied a lot in school and how he handles it.
Scholarship Example• School is a member of
MTM • District is a member of
MTM• Individual Membership• CUW Lutheran
Teacher Grant• Total Scholarship
Possibility
• $225.00
• $225.00• ($225 or
$450)• $285.00
• $735.00
Scholarships• Due to a financial agreement we have
with CUW, we are able to continue to roll over our scholarships.
• We currently have around $100,000 in scholarship money set aside.
• We do not use this money for operational costs.
Operational Costs
• Districts– Sliding scale based on number of
schools in the district– We ask them to support the program
for three years– We ask for $100/school with a cap of
50 schools, or $5000– Districts are then grandfathered in ….
Operational Costs
• Schools– Current membership costs:
• $350.00 for schools in member Districts.• $550.00 for schools in non-member
Districts.– Schools who are members of the
Lutheran School Portal, LEA, or ALSS, may deduct $50.00 from their membership fee.
Individual Memberships
• For a $100 yearly membership– They would receive a $225
scholarship for each MTM class taken that year.
• For a $200 yearly membership– They would receive a $450
scholarship for each MTM class taken that year.
School Example Immanuel, Wisconsin Rapids
• Their membership cost was $300
• They received $5200 in MTM scholarships
• They received $2280 in CUW grants
School ExampleEmanuel, New London
• They paid $500 for a membership
• They received $8450 in MTM scholarships
District Example - Indiana• 28 principals and teachers
took MTM classes one semester.
• Scholarships provided for these principals and teachers amounted to: $17,400.00
• The Indiana District is asked to provide $5000.00 a year for three years.
Challenge - Think Tank in June
• For pastors and DCE’s
• Purpose is to explore possibilities of what we may do for this ministry group.
• Our courses help principals and teachers not only to learn about the technology, but also to learn with the technology and how to integrate it into their curriculums.
• We are being told by many that the 21st century requires a preparation of the nation’s future citizens in markedly different ways than in the past.
• Schools are expected to respond with changes in both the tools used to attain this literacy and the curriculum that supports this learning.
• Video – From the Industrial Age
• Share video shown Wednesday night if most were not there.
• MTM LEA Convocation Principals in Cache
Within an effective educational setting, technology can enable students to become:
– Capable information technology users– Information seekers, analyzers, and evaluators– Problem solvers and decision makers– Creative and effective users of productivity tools– Communicators, collaborators, publishers, and
producers– Informed, responsible, and contributing citizens.
