A READING FROM THE BOOK OF GENESIS CHAPTER 18: VERSES 1 - 15

The Lord appeared to Abraham by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the entrance of his tent in the heat of the day. He looked up and saw three men standing near him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent entrance to meet them, and bowed down to the ground. He said, ‘My lord, if I find favour with you, do not pass by your servant. Let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree. Let me bring a little bread, that you may refresh yourselves, and after that you may pass on – since you have come to your servant.’ So they said, ‘Do as you have said.’ And Abraham hastened into the tent to Sarah, and said, ‘Make ready quickly three measures of choice flour, knead it, and make cakes.’ Abraham ran to the herd, and took a calf, tender and good, and gave it to the servant, who hastened to prepare it. Then he took curds and milk and the calf that he had prepared, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree while they ate. They said to Abraham, ‘Where is your wife Sarah?’ And he said, ‘There, in the tent.’ Then one said, ‘I will surely return to you in due season, and your wife Sarah shall have a son.’ And Sarah was listening at the tent entrance behind him. Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in age; it had ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women. So Sarah laughed to herself, saying, ‘After I have grown old, and my husband is old, shall I have pleasure?’ The Lord said to Abraham, ‘Why did Sarah laugh, and say, “Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?” Is anything too wonderful for the Lord? At the set time I will return to you, in due season, and Sarah shall have a son.’ But Sarah denied, saying, ‘I did not laugh’; for she was afraid. He said, ‘Oh yes, you did laugh.’

July – Parish Focus on Prayer During the month of July, we are having a special focus on prayer. Parishioners are encouraged to come to church early on one or more Sundays during July to spend some time praying for a specific issue/s for yourselves and for someone else/others including family, friends, neighbours, our church, our community and the world. Each church centre (Kenilworth, Maleny and Montville) will be open 30 minutes before the service starting time. Come early and find a quiet space to facilitate your time of quiet prayer and reflection. At St George’s, Maleny, a prayer corner will be set up with seats and a prayer board and with paper and pens provided. Written prayers can be folded and if necessary placed in envelopes and pinned to the board. At St Mary’s, Montville, written prayers can be placed in the ‘Prayer Requests’ box. At St Luke’s, Kenilworth, a quiet space will be set up at the back of the church. May we and others be blessed through this special ministry of prayer.

Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. Philippians 4.6

Then when you call upon me and come and pray to me, I will hear you. Jeremiah 29.12

PSALM 116.1 - 2, 11 - 18 We say alternate verses

I love the Lord, because he heard my voice: the voice of my supplication; Because he inclined his ear to me: in the day that I called to him. How shall I repay the Lord: for all his benefits to me? I will take up the cup of salvation: and call upon the name of the Lord. I will pay my vows to the Lord: in the presence of all his people. Grievous in the sight of the Lord: is the death of his faithful ones. O Lord, I am servant, your servant and the child of your handmaid: you have unloosed my bonds. I will offer you a sacrifice of thanksgiving: and call upon the name of the Lord. I will offer you a sacrifice of thanksgiving: and call upon the name of the Lord. I will pay my vows to the Lord: in the presence of all his people, In the courts of the house of the Lord: even in your midst, O Jerusalem. Praise the Lord.

A READING FROM ROMANS CHAPTER 5: VERSES 1-11

Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person - though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare to die. But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us. Much more surely then, now that we have been justified by his blood, will we be saved through him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more surely, having been reconciled, will we be saved by his life. But more than that, we even boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

THE GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO MATTHEW CHAPTER 9 BEGINNING AT THE 35TH VERSE

Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every disease and every sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; therefore ask

the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest.’ Then Jesus summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to cure every disease and every sickness. These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon, also known as Peter, and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax-collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, the one who betrayed him. These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: ‘Go nowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. As you go, proclaim the good news, “The kingdom of heaven has come near.” Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. You received without payment; give without payment.

FOR THE GOSPEL OF THE LORD PRAISE TO YOU LORD JESUS CHRIST

Rev’d Derek Barrett’s Commentary on the Readings:

Psalm 116

The second Eucharistic prayer speaks of the life-time obedience of Jesus to His God-given vocation. Today’s psalm gives us a few instances of a mere mortal also being obedient and devout through his observance of the Jewish religion. “Seven whole days, not one in seven” his very being is turned to The Almighty, and this is because of his faithfulness to his forbears who had kept the covenant relationship, “I will be their God, they will be my people”. All this through thick and thin, pain and adversity, much of which was the knowledge and sight of his associates’ unfaithfulness. The 19th century hymn-writer Horatio Bonar who lived to be over eighty had his own version of the 116th psalm: “Fill every part of me with praise; let all my being speak of Thee and of Thy Love, O Lord, poor though I be and weak. So shalt Thou, gracious Lord, from me receive the glory due; and so shall I begin on earth the song forever new (so) all my life, in every step be fellowship with Thee.”

Romans 5 verses 1-11

Go back to the beginning of the letter, “Since I have never met you personally I ought to introduce myself. My name is Paul and I have a God-given task to tell people this good news from God. It concerns His Son, the Anointed One who is the Lord of everything. He is Our Lord and we are His servants.” Paul’s missionary journeys to date have centered in the Middle East, he must now get his credentials to the heart of the Roman Empire before he visits its capital city where already Christians who were formerly Jews and non-Jewish Christians were living and not always in harmony. He needs their help, support and prayer before he proceeds even further West to Spain. Now in chapter five

he continues his thesis that the good news is that God has taken the initiative to make people righteous, loving and peaceable. We have been caught up in The Lord’s saving work. In Him alone we have salvation because in His risen state He lives in us and we become bearers of all His blessings to others. Read on.

Matthew 9 verse 35 following

Our gospel writer makes clear distinctions between “the disciples” and the “crowds” which correspond to “missionaries” and “those to be evangelized”. He makes much of their vocation (personal invitation by Jesus) to proclaim the arrival of the King and His Kingdom through teaching, preaching and healing. By this means disciples (those who accepted the discipline of Jesus) could and would attract ordinary people to listen, pay attention and respond. There is a foretaste of this in chapter four in the call of Simon, Andrew, James and John who were given the unexpected, astounding and mind-boggling news that they were to become “fishers of men”. We have now reached Stage Two when Jesus adds eight more to the pioneer work-force because the people are like sheep without a shepherd and the harvest is too big for the labourers to harvest. Note how the most Jewish of the four evangelists uses the Jewish scriptural terminology, harvesting and shepherding. Jesus says to the Twelve, “He who receives you receives Me and Him who sent Me.”

Thank you to Rev’d Jeanette and our friends at St. George’s for all your help with Lorna’s farewell. The service was a very loving and respectful tribute to our wonderful mother and mother-in-law.
