Term 3 Week 1
20th July, 2017
THE PENINSULA PRESS
Time to end hibernation
Welcome back to Term 3 the second half of year for everyone except Year 12 who will commence
their final term of secondary schooling. It’s both an exciting and a scary time, however, getting the
balance between study, work, social life and other commitments is often difficult to attain. If you
get the balance wrong it can lead to a build up of stress and anxiety with performance being greatly
affected.
The ‘bear analogy’ is a useful one for this time of year... Hibernation is required to cope with the
winter and prepare for the summer ahead. This parallels the recent school holidays, which allow
time to recover from the pressure of the Trial Examinations and commence preparation for the final
term of schooling.
Year 12, now that we have started this term it is of the utmost importance to take stock of what has
transpired throughout the Trial period and plan a course of action. The hibernation period is now
over, Term 3 requires strong time management skills, study planning and preparation for the final
tasks, practical Major Work assessments and ultimately, the HSC Examinations. No longer can
anyone say, “I’ll get to that later” – the time is now!
In combination with awaking from hibernation and I mentioned it earlier is the need for balance.
Stress and anxiety is more prevalent in this term than any other. This is normal with the HSC but
should be managed accordingly. Plan to distress, take appropriate time-out from study to unwind
and look after each other safely.

The Mental Health and Wellbeing of Children and Young People
As you are fully aware Barrenjoey is
working hard to ensure all the
community is aware of the importance of
mental health. Recently we have held
an Accidental Counsellor course for
interested parents with another planned
for August this year.
Our staff will attend a presentation from
the Blackdog Institute on the matter this
Thursday evening so that we remain
clearly focused on this vital issue.
With the aim of increasing parental
understanding of the mental health and
wellbeing of their children we are
promoting a free parenting seminar
where one of the exciting speakers is an
ex-student of Barrenjoey, Dr Kirstin
Barchia. If you’re able to attend on the
12th August I highly recommend this seminar to you.
Congratulations
Congratulations this week to Axel Akerman (Year 11).
During the school holidays, Axel spent four days immersed in the
world of Historically Informed Performance (HIP). 47 students from
22 schools throughout Sydney and beyond came together at Santa
Sabina College to play Mozart’s ‘Haffner’ Symphony. Musicians of
the Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra tutored the students
in rehearsals, sectionals, and workshops, applying musical stylistic
practices from Mozart’s time. Students were able to experience
period instruments and learn about how European musical styles
have changed through time. Finally, the Haffner Symphony was
brought to life in an exceptional performance for friends and family, which showcased the abilities of our Young Mannheim Symphonists.
Nicole van Bruggen the General Manager of the Orchestra stated “it was a pleasure to include
Axel in our orchestra”. Well done Axel on challenging yourself with this terrific opportunity.
Have a great week... Ian Bowsher

SPORTS NEWS
Congratulations to our Year 12 boys Basketball
Team, ‘Barrenjoey Reds’, who played in the
Manly Warringah Basketball Open Boys Grand
Final on June 30. In a tremendously thunderous
performance supported by their families and
many school mates, the team held out unbeaten
rivals ‘Pittwater Bulls’ well into the second half,
but as the Bulls finally hit the lead, in such a
close game, our team went down at the final siren
33-27. However, they are very proud runners up,
to be highly commended for their sensational
team performance and sportsmanship in their
toughest game ever. Very big thanks to the Year
12 students who came to cheer them along!
The 9 players are: Jackson Baker, Ben Cramer,
Cooper Excell, Antony Hawke, Alex Moran,
Cameron Neale, Jack Phillips, Ben Reay &
Trystan Ziemer, coached by Brett Nicholson.
MATHS WEEKLY PUZZLE TO PONDER
ANSWER TO LAST TERMS PUZZLE
Every alternate week the Maths staff will pose a
mathematical puzzle to ponder with a syllabus reference
and degree of difficulty (1 to 5 compasses) will be supplied.
The solution will be provided in the next week’s issue.
OBTUSE ANGLES
Mr Seymour’s Weekly Science Fact!
Last terms question:
Julius has a strange code. It turns some numbers into other numbers. When his friend says ‘five’ Julius says ‘four!’ When his friend says ‘six’, Julius says ‘nine!’ When his friend says ‘nine’, Julius says ‘one!’ What’s going on? Can you work out what Julius would say when his friend says 12?
* Syllabus reference: Stage 4: MA4-2WM
You age faster at the top of a building than at the bottom.
According to Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity, time
slows down when gravity is stronger however the difference
in the flow rate of time at the top of a skyscraper (further from
Earth – weaker gravity) and the bottom (closer to Earth –
stronger gravity) is too small to measure.
Time also slows down when you move faster. An astronaut in
a spacecraft orbiting the Earth at an altitude of 500 km and a
speed of 8 km per second for 12 months would age about
one hundredth of a second less than someone on Earth.
Julius is looking at the letters in each number and only reading the
ones that can be used for Roman numerals. So five has IV in it, and
IV is four.
Twelve has LV in it, which in Roman numerals is 55. So Julius will
say ’55’.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF THE ELIZABETHAN ERA – YEAR 9
As part of our topic on Elizabethan England and Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night Dream',
we have been looking at daily life in the Elizabethan Era. We have been shocked and
sometimes disgusted and just how different life for the Elizabethans was to our lives today.
For example, Elizabethan women remained the property of their husbands. They were
expected to be obedient and submissive. If they weren't, they could be physically punished.
To get a feel for Elizabethan life, Ms Wilson's English class participated in an Elizabethan
cooking class. Thanks to Ms King, we made funeral baked meat pies an unusual blend of
dates, meat and spices. A tasty dish for wealthy Elizabethans. The braver among us tried some
blood pudding and were pleasantly surprised at its flavour.
Overall, it was an exciting experience that allowed history to come alive.

Slow down
to 40
when bus
lights flash
In NSW there are thousands of buses that travel every day transporting students to and from
school. Due to their size and mass busses they take more time to stop. Crashes involving
buses often result in more severe outcomes for other road users.
The Centre for Road Safety is committed to improving safety around buses and is implementing
a tactical school bus safety campaign. This is a reminder for parents and carers that they
always need to supervise their children and hold their hand when walking to and from the bus
stop or interchange and when crossing the road. In addition, parents should no call their
children across the road as it could lead to dire consequences.
The law states that a speed of 40km/h applies if passing a bus when the front and rear lights
are flashing as the bus is picking up and setting down school children. Please slow down to
40km/h when bus lights are flashing. This is for the safety of all students.
If you want more information on this campaign please visit the Centre for Road Safety link:
