THE PENINSULA PRESS
Year 7 Lighthouse Walk
The Logic of Pooh Bear
It occurred to Pooh and Piglet that they hadn't heard from Eeyore for several days, so
they put on their hats and coats and trotted across the Hundred Acre Wood to Eeyore's
stick house. Inside the house was Eeyore.
"Hello Eeyore," said Pooh.
"Hello Pooh. Hello Piglet," said Eeyore, in a Glum Sounding Voice.
"We just thought we'd check in on you," said Piglet, "because we hadn't heard from you,
and so we wanted to know if you were okay."
Eeyore was silent for a moment. "Am I okay?" he asked, eventually. "Well, I don't know,
to be honest. Are any of us really okay? That's what I ask myself. All I can tell you, Pooh
and Piglet, is that right now I feel really rather Sad, and Alone, and Not Much Fun To Be
Around At All.
Which is why I haven't bothered you. Because you wouldn't want to waste your time
hanging out with someone who is Sad, and Alone, and Not Much Fun To Be Around At
All, would you now.“
Pooh looked and Piglet, and Piglet looked at Pooh, and they both sat down, one on either side
of Eeyore in his stick house.
Eeyore looked at them in surprise. "What are you doing?"
"We're sitting here with you," said Pooh, "because we are your friends. And true friends don't
care if someone is feeling Sad, or Alone, or Not Much Fun To Be Around At All. True friends
are there for you anyway. And so here we are."
"Oh," said Eeyore. "Oh." And the three of them sat there in silence, and while Pooh and Piglet
said nothing at all; somehow, almost imperceptibly, Eeyore started to feel a very tiny little bit
better.
Because Pooh and Piglet were There. No more; no less.

For some students, and indeed
some adults starting school and
facing the emotions and
stressors of life in general can
result in ‘unknown’ feelings
being experienced.
Often the first people to notice
these emotions and feelings are
the friends we surround
ourselves with.
As friends our job is not to
criticise or even diagnose, it’s
simply to support. In the first
instance ‘just be there’ for each
other – this is often enough to
start feeling better. If things for
your friend don’t seem to be
improving over time then either
assist them in seeking help or
talk to a significant person whocan help.
Have a great week everyone and a terrific 2019... Ian Bowsher

YEAR 7’s
Year 7 had a lovely day out at Palm Beach on Friday 1st of February.
This was their first event as a year group and indeed their first outing as part of the Barrenjoey
family.
We began the day with a walk up to Barrenjoey Lighthouse accompanied by lots of parents and
our very own photographers, followed by a series of beautiful photographs to remember the
day. By the time we all walked back down from the lighthouse a group of fabulous parents had
prepared us a BBQ breakfast that we all enjoyed, particularly after walking up those stairs to
the lighthouse! The rest of the day was spent at Governor Phillip Park in our Peer Support
groups where Year 10 mentors helped the students to get to know each other, find out more
about high school life and settle in to Barrenjoey.
Well done to Year 7 on a great day of demonstrating respect, effort and challenge! Ms Dwyer

CONGRATULATIONS TO YEAR 11 STUDENT HENRI HOLE
SURF COLLECTIVE INITIATIVE WINNER 2018!
Squid Handplanes- Beautifully Simple & Simply Beautiful
- are economically-priced handmade alternative wave-
riding vehicles boasting a half-crested tail and a smooth
rounded plan-shape to guarantee fun times for beginner
and veteran surf riders everywhere.
That’s why back in 2017 we partnered with Barrenjoey High School to put together a specific
program and competition dedicated and designed to ensure the continuation of Australia’s
exceptional historical track record in this area, by directly encouraging, fostering and nurturing
emerging and upcoming generations of homegrown surf industry talent.
In this, its second year of successful operation, we’re proud as Punch to introduce and
announce Henri Hole and his Squid Handplanes design as the 2018 Winner of our High School
Business Studies Initiative - a collaborative business/education program and competition that
mentors, assists and encourages Year 10 Business Studies students to develop an actual surf-
related product while learning - and experiencing - the ‘ins and outs’ of real-world business
practice and requirements.
As the 2018 Winner, Henri will receive direct funding from Surf Collective to assist in the initial
production of his winning Squid Handplanes product - a handmade, recycled and economically-
priced alternative wave-riding vehicle that features a highly functional half-crested tail and a
smoothly rounded plan-shape.
Henri’s Squid Handplanes will also receive online shopfront space on the Surf Collective website
(here) - a rich stable of proudly independent Australian brands and surf-related products - and a
bricks and mortar presence for his recycled wares at The Sneaky Grind Café - Surf Collective’s
collaborative retail outlet in the heart of Avalon.
We’re eagerly looking forward to seeing how Henry and Squid Handplanes’ fledgling surf-
industry journey will pan out in both the near and distant future, and are already looking forward
to seeing what brilliant results the 2019 High School Business Studies Initiative participants willproduce!
It’s no secret that we here at Surf Collective are both proud and
passionate about supporting creative inspiration and local and
domestic surf-related product innovation and development in Australia.
Obtuse Angles
Every alternate week the Maths staff will pose a mathematical puzzle
to ponder.
The solution will be provided in the following issue.
Last week’s questionThe same letters in this calculation mean the
same digit.
Can you replace all the letters with the
respective digits in such a way that the
calculation is correct?
Hint: What possible values could
the letter ‘M’ take?
