The City of Austin is making steady progress in its replacement of water and wastewater lines in Pemberton Heights. PHNA President Carla Hatler and board member Betty Trent have been in contact with the City to keep residents apprised of the work’s status and ensure that any damage done to curb tiles will be repaired. Although the City is contractually on schedule to finish by the end of August, the project manager hopes for a July completion date.

Street Repaving: Streets on which water lines

were replaced will be re-paved; streets on which only gas lines were replaced will not. The process will be completed in two phases: the first group of streets--Jarratt, Gaston (west of Harris), Etheridge and Northwood--will be repaved by early April.

Curb tile damage: The City is working with the PHNA

Board Member Betty Trent to find suitable tile replacements and repair to satisfaction. Betty has been diligent in ensuring that any replacement tile needed is a suitable match to the original tile. Tile is being salvaged where possible.

The burglary of a Wooldridge home last month in the middle of the afternoon highlights an important fact about property crime: it is primarily a daytime phenomenon. People fear the night more, but homes are actually most vulnerable between 9am and 3pm, when burglars assume no one is home.

Prevention is the best security!1. Never leave an extra key to the house in the mailbox,

under doormats, over door frames, or under flowerpots. 2. Leave the shades or curtains up when not at home. Leave

the TV or radio on.3. Don’t leave a note saying when you will return.4. Close the garage door and lock it when leaving.5. Don’t put your name or address on the key case your

carry: if lost or stolen, change locks regardless of whether you had your name or address inside the case.

6. Do not leave ladders outside the house. They are perfect devices for entry.

7. Padlock your garage.8. Be sure that yard gates and other such locations are closed.

Burglars like easy access, and opening and closing a gate takes time, attracts attention, makes noise, etc.

9. Consider a lock for your mailbox: your mail can contain your most valuable possession: information.

10. Do not keep stocks, bonds, or coin collections in your home. Put them in a safe deposit box at the bank.

11. A large “doggie door” in any of your doors leading to the outside or into the garage can become “burglar doors,” too.

12. Too many “wrong number” calls could be a burglar trying to determine if anyone is at home.

Pemberton Heights Neighborhood Watch is a free, effective crime-prevention program designed to prevent property crime without weapons or confrontations. Volunteer 30 minutes per week to drive the neighborhood during peak burglary hours. We look out for each other! Contact Tina Weinberger at [email protected]. Above suggestions obtained 04/15/14 from http://www.fumo.com/State_Services/crime_prevention/homes_and_apartments.htm

Join the youth of Pemberton Heights—ages one to 95 years--to the annual Pemberton Heights Egg Hunt on FRIDAY, APRIL 18 at 10am (sharp!) at 1510 Wooldridge Dr. Please arrive 10 minutes early: we’ve got some professional egg-hunters ‘round here, and we don’t want you to miss the fun.

EGG DROPPlease drop off 20 filled eggs per child between Monday,

April 14 and Thursday, April 17. There will be boxes, grouped by age group, on the Harris side of 1510 Wooldridge Dr. You will find them to the left of the garage behind the metal gate. Out of consideration for our neighbors with allergies, nut-free treats or non-edible, age-appropriate surprises (stickers, toys, bubbles, coins, etc.—but no confetti, please) are encouraged.

GOLDEN EGGS (Optional)The golden egg tradition is an egg hunt highlight for many

of our little ones. You are welcome to augment our donation by dropping an envelope labeled “EGG HUNT” in our mailbox at 1510 Wooldridge Dr. with any amount you’d like to add by Thursday, April 17. Please note on your envelope the age group(s) to which you’d like to apply the gift.

SPECIAL THANKSA big “Thank you!” to the participating neighbors on the

1500 block of Wooldridge, along with the Brown, Hicks, Howard, Kinsel, and Simmons families for their food and beverage donations.

DONATIONSIf you are interested in donating snacks/drinks or

volunteering to hide eggs on the morning-of, please email Lauren Fornes on or before April 10 at [email protected].

All are welcome and encouraged to join the celebration! Happy hunting!
