SciGirls Season 2 Every girl can be a SciGirl!

Starting in October, ten new episodes on PBS will showcase bright, curious, real girls using science, technology, engineering, and math in their everyday lives. They will design an underwater robot, engineer a “chill” ice-cream-making bike, apply real forensic methods to solving a mysterious crime, and more! In Season Two, there’s even more of the unique combination of TV and web that won the series a Daytime Emmy for “New Approaches” in its premiere season.

Each episode of the TV show features onscreen clues that lead girls to a “mash-up” game on the website, where they can create their own, unique SciGirls stories. Plus, in other new interactive games, kids can search for underwater treasure, care for a colony of honey bees, and design wildlife dioramas.

City staff Morgan Byers and Chris Calvary made a presentation to The Pease Park Conservancy last month on upcoming improvements planned for the park. The Department of Watershed Protection will be looking at making improvements including native vegetation restoration and slope stabilization for the creek.

The project is in the early design stage and the primary goals are to stabilize the creek beds and take out invasive non-native plant species, which have overrun the park. Other improvements will include rerouting some exposed sewer lines from the middle of the creek to the edge of Lamar Blvd and adding a bike trail on the east side of the creek to help eliminate bike traffic on Lamar.

This phase of the project will involve the park between 15th street and 28th street. The designers are looking at landscaping improvements to make the park look as natural as possible, adding boulders at creek crossings to help stop erosion, and creating rain gardens to slow the rate of water runoff into the creek.

The project is scheduled to begin work in the summer of 2013

and will take a year to complete. Anyone having a concern about the design can contact the City staff at 311.

The Pease Park Conservancy is an organization dedicated to caring for Pease Park and they will be stakeholders in planning the improvements. The conservancy has raised over $100,000 for new trees in the park. They are undertaking restoration activities and are coordinating with PARD on improvements to the volleyball courts. The Conservancy will be planning a fundraiser in November. They plan to hold the fundraiser in the park near the volleyball courts.

Residents are encouraged to join the Conservancy and donations can be made by writing a check to the “Pease Park Conservancy” or donations can be made to the Pease Park Permanent Financial Endowment by writing a check to “Pease Park Endowment” and mailing it to the Austin Community Foundation, 4315 Guadalupe, Austin, Texas 78751.

For more information on the Conservancy, contact Richard Craig  at 477-0737 or [email protected]
