FIRST PEMBERTON GARAGE SALE DAY SCHEDULED: SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 28

Pemberton Heights residents are invited to participate in a neighborhood wide garage sale day. Everyone who’s been collecting miscellaneous items ought to consider putting them out for sale in their front yard or driveway on the last Saturday in September. Why have a Neighborhood Garage Sale Day? More stuff draws more traffic. A multifamily sale is better then selling alone. Plus, it can be a fun community event. Besides the old baseball mitt and gently used slow-cooker, enterprising kids can practice entrepreneurial skills with lemonade stands and bake sales.

Another advantage of a neighborhood sale is that individual sellers don’t have to offer a large number of things. You can participate with just a handful of items, which might not be enough to support a whole sale by themselves.

At this neighborhood garage sale day, each participant is responsible for their own selling. The plan involves co-operative advertising and promotion but not combined sales. Participants will retain all the revenue from sales of their items. The PHNA has allocated $250 to pay for signage at the entrances of the neighborhood and ads in the Austin American Statesman. Participants in the sale are encouraged to prepare their own signs as well. For more information contact: Jane Hayman, [email protected], (415) 516 1296.

SOME TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL SALE:

Consider the purpose of your sale. Are you selling things to make money or to get rid of them? This will affect everything from how items are priced in the first place to how negotiable the prices are. Choose your staging area wisely. Front yard? Driveway? People will be more inclined to stop if you set up shop where your stuff is highly visible from the street. You can lure customers by placing highly desirable items near the road. Remember shade is pretty important to you and your customers. Be prepared. Be ready to go the night before so that you don’t have to rush around in the morning. Serious buyers will show up bright and early.

Plan your sale layout with customers in mind. Use marketing tricks to make your customers more likely to purchase your stuff! Price things carefully. ebay and the internet will give you a guide on what prices are for many items. Be willing to bargain, but be less flexible at the start. Label things well, know what an item is, and how old it is. Be friendly. Greet people as they arrive — chat if they’re chatty. Know if an item works and have electric power close by to demonstrate the function of an electrical item. Have bags and wrapping paper available. Don’t use a cash box. Keep your money ON YOU at all times. Have plenty of small bills for change.

Neighborhood Watch Update Protecting Your Home From Break-ins

Tina Weinberger, Neighborhood Watch

• Sixty-five percent of break-ins occur by forcing in the front, back or garage service door (FBI crime stats). Replace your exterior doors with solid core doors that are 1 3/8 inches thick. Make sure your deadbolt and lockset strike plates have been updated and are attached with 3-inch screws.

• Twelve percent of entries happen when burglars find your “hidden” key or simply walk in through an unlocked door. Don’t hide keys under doormats or flowerpots or in similar places.

• Lock all doors and windows and close garage doors when you are not at home. Secure windows with 2 locking devices.

• Give the appearance of someone being home when you are not. Leave lights on a timer, turn the television on, and park a car in the driveway.

• Reduce high bushes and other foliage around your home in which people can lurk or hide.

• Hide all valuables in your home or car. Store purses, lap tops and cell phones out of sight. No one should be able to look into a window and see your valuables when you are not at home.

• When out of town, cancel all deliveries such as the newspaper.

The Pemberton JournalPemberton Triangle UpdateEarlier this year, the Pemberton Heights Neighborhood

Association dedicated one of the neighborhood triangles to long-time resident, Gail Morris (1937-2011). "Gail's Garden", located at Harris and Wooldridge, was made possible by donations from Pemberton Heights residents.

The triangle committee, headed up by Craig Duewall and Sabrina Brown, also has an initiative underway in coordination with the City and "Keep Austin Beautiful" to beautify several remaining triangles found within the boundaries of Pemberton Heights.

Starting in July, the City will be installing water on two of the neighborhood triangles, Wooldridge/ Gaston and Leigh/Jarratt , allowing us to landscape these areas this coming fall.

In addition, the neighborhood has expressed a strong desire to create a playscape at the Hartford triangle. Planning and fundraising for this project are about to begin.

Anyone who is interested in assisting with these efforts should contact Craig Duewall at [email protected]. For more information on participating or to make a donation to the triangle landscaping effort, Please visit the neighborhood website at pembertonheights.org

Pemberton Pets of the Month

“PAUL”OWNED BY DONNA STOCKTON-HICKS

AND STEVE HICKS

Interviewed by Tina Weinberger

Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful. Jealous birds—ugly birds—have always sniped and spat at

me. They gossip behind my back or “accidentally” step on my train. It’s true I’ve had advantages—the quill used to sign the Declaration of Independence was gifted to Jefferson by my great-great-great-great grandfather, and my Uncle Pete was the model for the NBC peacock—but that only gets you a talon in the door. Pedigree or no, a slovenly appearance is always déclassé. Fastidious grooming is the entrée to upper crest society.

Grooming should be a daily ritual, like tidying up your roost. Begin your morning toilette by brushing your fan with a top-of-the-line feather duster, followed by a touch-up pruning. Draw a warm—not hot!—bird bath and soak for 30 minutes with teabags on each eye. Spread out in the sun to dry, then fluff. For a polished, iridescent look, mist with a perfumed atomizer, but don’t overdo or you’ll mildew. My feathers have sold for millions during molting season.

Unkempt talons have destroyed many a reputation. A gentleman never leaves the roost without a beak cloth and an

emery board tucked inside his bosom feathers. A dab of musk at the base of the gullet and our cavalier is all set to emerge from his tree and greet his guests. To those who would call me a dandy, I say, “Feathers make the man.” Carriage is next: strutting like a peacock is the surest mark of good breeding.

I have been asked to comment on the recent spate of lawsuits brought against peacock owners for noise pollution. It seems that humans—inventors of the pneumatic hammer—have taken issue with the sensual, evocative squawk of a peacock. Ours is the melody of unbridled passion and desire, the music of love played at 130dB. Have the people residing along Harris or Wooldridge, who get a pained look on their face as I pass by crooning Elvis’ “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” never felt the ardent longing for a soulmate? We must rally against this attempt to restrict freedom of expression! Arise, peacocks, peahens, peachicks, peafowl from every park and every ranch, from every yard, nest, and roost. Our voices will be heard!
