It was truly Lighting Up Rotary; when 25 stunningcandles - floating in water - were lit up by CharterPresident, Past presidents Charter Members anddignitaries to signify the Silver Jubilee of DownTown,it was a sight to behold. (pix page2) A galaxy of PDGs,District officials, past and present DownTowners andfriends of DownTown were witness to an enchantingevening of nostalgia and action. The Silver Jubilee Team,led by Rtn. Vivekanandan, was installed by DG Rtn.Manjunath Shetty in the presence of GSR, PRID Dr. M.K.Panduranga Setty and the AG, Rtn. Kalyan
Gopalakrishna.
As part of the community service projects, hearing aidswere provided to four students of Shastri MemorialSchool of Deaf & Dumb, Mahalakshmipuram, Bangaloreand notebooks to the needy students on the occasion.Rtn. PP Revathi sponsored the heart surgery of a girlchild. Projects planned for the year under Community,Vocational, International Service and New Generationwere shared by the Directors .
Rtn. IPP Sriram was complimented for an eventfulyear under trying circumstances and the incomingteam shared its vision for the year. Five newmembers were inducted into DownTown fold byGSR, PRID Panduranga Setty and DG ManjunathShetty urged DownTowners to go for externalextension and also increase the strength at least 25members to mark the silver jubilee year.
The mood to a captivating evening was set byAnnet Tanuja with a fine invocation. AG Rtn.Kalyan Gopalakrishna released the e-bulletin‘DownTowner and Dist. Secretary, Rtn. Sureshreleased the Call Card. Rtn.IPP Sriram presentedthe audited accounts for the year 2013-14 and Rtn.Raghu Allam proposed the formal Vote of Thanksto bring down the curtains to an action packedevening.
PRID Panduranga Settyurged the Rotarians, ‚Youhave become a Rotariannot because someone haspushed you intobecoming one, butbecause you have a heartwhich believes in service;you want to do good tothe society; but why not
tell this to the world around you ? Why not sharethis with others and convert their hearts to join usand give whatever they can to those who need ?Light Up Rotary by sharing Rotary. ‚

People come into Rotary for all kinds of reasons, but
they stay because Rotary is fun to be a part of. So I want
to remind all of you to have fun in your clubs and your
districts. Rotary is based on the idea that our service is
more effective when we serve together with our friends.

•Literacy Plus, initiated in 2006, was a 3-H grant project of US $ 200,000 of the District 3190and Rotary Bangalore DownTown, Highgounds, South Parade and Rotary Vijayapura. Anintegrated Literacy project with Rotary Lancaster West , D-5260 as the International Partners.4 of the DownTown supported schools 1. Government Higher Primary and High School,Bileshivale, Dodda Gubbi 2. Hennur Government School, Hennur 3. Government BoysPrimary School, Srirampuram 4. Government Girls Primary School, Srirampuram receivedsupport. In all 105 Desks, 8 Tables, 12 Chairs, 8 Storage Cabinets were provided (aboutRs.3,40,000) and Comfort Stations (Rs.7.63,500) were built. Teachers Training inConcentrated Language Encounter method was offered at a cost of Rs.40000, for 10 teachers
plus parents workshops were held in all schools. This benefitted nearly 2000 students directly that year,continues to benefit many more.
• Celebrate Literacy – Rotary Literacy Confluence was organised by DownTown to markthe Rotary’s Centennial Year. Rotary Bangalore DownTown created record, a Multi District
conference with Districts 3190, 3180, 3170 and 3160 participating and being inaugurated in August2004 by RI President Glenn Estess himself. The mission Literacy – Every Child’s Right,Every person’s responsibility, was addressed by leading educationists, NGOs, admini
- strators including Dr. Shama Chona of Delhi Public School fame, Ms. Rohini Nelakini of
DownTown has focused on Literacy from the inception, teacher training to provision of desks,notebooks, comfort stations, computers and the like is being carried out year on year. This includesspecial children. Couple of worth recalling projects :
Literacy effort continues as always, now under T-E-A-C-H program , the new the Rotary India Literacy Mission
2014-15 year began with provision of note books. Notebookswere provided to the students of by Crest Counseling Centrethanks to the support of ITC an initiative by PP G Ramanand. Itwas a joint project of Rotary Bangalore DownTown and RotaryBangalore Ramamurthynagar.

DownTown has made a small beginning with 5 new members being inducted into DownTown by our GSR PRID Panduranga Setty at the installation evening. It was a comeback for Rtn. Sunderashwara, Rtn. Dr. Gunashekar and

•Rotary Comfort Stations DownTown rightfully can take credit for introducing the concept of Comfort Stations inGovernment Schools, particularly girls schools. DownTown also had in its Charter Secretary Rtn. Prathibha H R anarchitect to provide very functional design. When Charter President Madhura Chatrapathy was the DG , 16 RotaryComfort Stations were built at a cost of US $ 56 392 with the support Rotary Club Calgary, D-5360 Canada.Wild Rose Foundation of Alberta and Canadian Rotary Committee for International Development (CRCID) , non-Rotary Agencies that joined hands.
• Concentrated Language Encounter an unique activity based methodology for teaching language in the shortest period was introduced to the world of Rotary in Thailand subsequently many parts of the world. Rotary Bangalore DownTown took it up and trained teachers and students of 27 Bangalore City Corporation Schools with the support of the District, which was noted success.

Art of Rotary Attendance and Make-Ups
Rotary International bylaws state that a member can make up for a missed meeting within 2 weeks before or after the meeting.
If you anticipate missing a meeting, you can make up for it up to 2 weeks before that date. If you miss a meeting, you have up to 2 weeks after the missed meeting to make up.
Members do not have to make up for times when the club does not meet.
If a member attempts to make up at another club and that club either did not meet that week, or changed venues, the club member can let their club’s secretary know the date and time of the attempted make-up and it will count as a makeup towards a missed meeting.

Rotary E-Clubs
Rotary e-clubs are Rotary clubs that meet electronically. A 2010 Council on Legislation enactment recognized Rotary e-clubs as part of Rotary International, following a six-year pilot project. As of 1 July 2010, RI has 14 e-clubs, all of them chartered during the pilot.
What is the difference between Rotary clubs and Rotary e-clubs?
Rotary e-clubs follow the same policies as all Rotary clubs. The key difference is that an e-club conducts its weekly meeting on the club’s website. Rather than being physically present at an appointed day and time, members may attend meetings at any time and any day of the week. As all Rotary clubs do, Rotary e-clubs meet weekly, perform service projects in local and international communities, support The Rotary Foundation, and enjoy fellowship among members. And the keys to their effectiveness are also the same: service-minded members, opportunities for fellowship, and strong leadership.
During the 2004-10 pilot, e-clubs performed 355 community service projects, 106 international service projects, 55 vocational service projects, and 70 youth service projects. E-clubs gave more than US$150,000 to The Rotary Foundation, including more than $21,500 to Rotary’s US$200 Million Challenge.
