The college of liberal arTs brand
The College of Liberal Arts brand is clean, classic, and sophisticated, and includes photography, type treatments, and graphic elements that reinforce these concepts.
Components of the brand
Typography • Simple and elegant • Prominent headings • Short and concise body copy
Photography guidelines for photo treatments and composition:
• One large dominant photo on a page or spread • Juxtapose large photos with small detail shots or close-ups • Mood is dramatic, dynamic, conveys motion and emotion • Clear focal point leading the eye into the piece, toward the copy • Expressive faces • Off-center composition, or crop so the focal point (person, activity, etc.) is to the extreme
left or right in the shot • Subject of photo in focus, with background out of focus • Extreme close-ups • Tight or unusual crops • Unusual angles, such as a tilted composition, or a shot from above or below the
subject • Silhouettes of people against background • Visual repetition: repeating shapes shot in perspective either as foreground or back-
ground matter. Examples: people, tables/desks, architectural details, windows, blinds, patterns on the floor
Color • Black and Purdue gold used to make type and graphics stand out • Selective use of accent colors that coordinate with photography or graphic elements
Tagline “Distinguish yourself” • Placement below Liberal Arts co-brand, or separated as a subordinate element on publications
where appropriate

college of liberal arts stationery
The stationery materials developed by Purdue Marketing Communications provide a consistent look compatible with Purdue branding guidelines. They allow for identification of individual departments, offices, and programs, while maintaining the Liberal Arts co-brand, which includes the “Distinguish yourself” tagline.
PRINTeD STATIONeRy: Printing Services is recommended for all stationery materials to ensure quality and consistency, and that information is current and accurate. Printing Services also provides raised letter thermog-raphy printing for business cards at economical prices. All stationery materials produced for external communi-cation should present a quality, professional look that represents Purdue well. Business cards on flimsy paper, mis-matched letterhead and envelope papers, and poor text and color reproduction are not acceptable.
Printing Services will use the standardized formats shown to print College of Liberal Arts letterhead and business cards. Stationery can be ordered using the Ariba system or a Printing Services Form 3.
Stationery allows for customization for individual departments, offices, and programs.
• Business cards: Horizontal or vertical business card formats may be selected.
• envelopes: Envelopes follow the format shown and should print on matching paper stock. Envelopes do not use the “Distinguish yourself” tagline.
eleCTRONIC leTTeRheAD: Individual departments and other areas may create their own letterhead for small-run printing and electronic communications, using Microsoft Word templates customized for CLA.
All text for letterhead must conform to University stationery standards, as identified in this manual, including the proper use of departments, offices, and programs names, building names, and academic and staff titles. Only deans, directors, and named professors are approved for having their name printed on University statio-nery. The format accommodates lengthy items, such as building names and room numbers, e-mail addresses, and Web addresses. Address information is presented in the recommended U.S. Postal Service (USPS) format. Specifications include the following:
• Appropriate street address for all campus buildings with the 47906 or 47907 zip code.
• For any USPS mailing purposes, the last two lines of the address should be the street address followed by the city, state, and zip.
• Final address line on main campus is: West Lafayette, IN 47907-XXXX. “XXXX” is the zip+4 assigned as part of the street address.
Current, appropriate street addresses are available at www2.itap.purdue.edu/printsvc/mds/search/search.cfm.

The publications developed by Purdue Marketing Communications use Bauer Bodoni as a cover and heading font, in addition to standard Purdue identity fonts.
Additional related materials may need to be produced by individual departments and offices. These are most effective when they support the broader branding effort and include consistency in content as well as appear-ance. The development and repetition of a consistent message in a variety of materials and media is an impor-tant part of the branding. Merely using the center graphics on publications of widely varying style and quality will weaken the consistency and credibility of the communication.
The following examples represent possible designs showing standardized graphics.
