ANSWERANSWER

NO !NO !

WHY ?WHY ?

Page 5: C H O L E S T E R O L

BECAUSE MANY STUDIES BECAUSE MANY STUDIES SHOWSHOW

• There is no linear relation between cholesterol levels and heart attack or stroke risk

• This has been known for decades

• Despite a massive use of statin cholesterol drugs over the past two decades, the incidence of Cardiovascular disease hasn’t changed.

Page 6: C H O L E S T E R O L

LIPID HYPOTHESIS OF LIPID HYPOTHESIS OF HEART DISEASEHEART DISEASE

• First proposed by Russian researcher David Kritchevsky in 1954, later by Ancel Keys

• Rabbits fed with cholesterol had heart disease induced• Feeding the rabbits vegetable oils lowered cholesterol

( albeit temporarily), the supposedly cause of heart disease.

• In effect, it meant: Cholesterol = heart disease

• This hypothesis is irrelevant today in the light of findings by many researchers

Page 7: C H O L E S T E R O L

CHOLESTEROL CHOLESTEROL MYTH 1MYTH 1

• High fat foods causes heart disease

• High cholesterol causes heart disease

• High fat foods raise blood cholesterol

• Cholesterol blocks arteries

• Animal studies prove the diet-heart idea that diet affects heart disease

• Lowering cholesterol will lenghten your life

Page 8: C H O L E S T E R O L

CHOLESTEROL CHOLESTEROL MYTH 2MYTH 2

• Polyunsaturated oils are good for you

• The cholesterol campaign (to have people reduce their cholesterol levels) is based on good evidence

• All scientists support the diet-heart idea

ALL THE ABOVE STATEMENTS ARE NOT TRUE (backed by solid scientific evidence).

Page 9: C H O L E S T E R O L

CHOLESTEROL FACTS BY CHOLESTEROL FACTS BY UFFE RAVNSKOV MD, Ph.DUFFE RAVNSKOV MD, Ph.D

• Cholesterol is a substance vital to the cells of all mammals

• Many studies have shown that people with low cholesterol are just as atherosclerotic as people with high cholesterol

• When you eat little cholesterol your body produces more than the usual amount; when you eat much, your body produces less

Page 10: C H O L E S T E R O L

CHOLESTEROL FACTS 2CHOLESTEROL FACTS 2

• There is no evidence that too much animal fat and cholesterol in the diet promotes atherosclerosis or heart attacks

• Many of these facts have been presented in scientific journals and books for decades, but rarely told to the public

Page 11: C H O L E S T E R O L

CHOLESTEROL FACTS 3CHOLESTEROL FACTS 3

• The reason why laymen, doctors and most scientists have been misled is because opposing and disagreeing results are systematically ignored or misquoted in the scientific press

• There are benefits of having high cholesterol

Page 12: C H O L E S T E R O L

FACTSFACTS

• Drug companies state that their statin drugs lower heart risk by 36%

• This is a manipulation of statistics by them

• The truth is, it falls just one percent !

• In fact, taking vitamin C and E will reduce risk by a much greater percentage

• 50 % of people who die of heart attacks have normal cholesterol levels

Page 13: C H O L E S T E R O L

CHRONIC INFLAMMATION

Page 14: C H O L E S T E R O L

WHAT IS CHRONIC WHAT IS CHRONIC INFLAMMATION ?INFLAMMATION ?

• IT IS A GOOD THING GONE BAD

• While acute inflammation is a protective and healing mechanism which lasts for a short time, chronic inflammation, which can go on for years, is a disease

• Inflammation means the body’s response to harmful stimuli in which a cascade of event is initiated to try to contain the harm.

Page 15: C H O L E S T E R O L

CHRONIC INFLAMMATIONCHRONIC INFLAMMATION(conclusions supported by extensive research and (conclusions supported by extensive research and

clinical evidence)clinical evidence)• Impairs endothelial function and vascular lining• Increases platelet activation and clotting• Depletes intrinsic anti-oxidants• Generates free radicals• Delays wound healing and tissue regeneration• Promotes cell aging and premature cell death• Supresses immune response

Page 16: C H O L E S T E R O L

CAUSES OF CHRONIC CAUSES OF CHRONIC INFLAMMATIONINFLAMMATION

• Polyunsaturated vegetable oils like safflower, sunflower, corn, peanut, soy

• High carbohydrate low protein diets

• Refined sugar

• Trans fats

• Pesticides, etc

• STRESS

Page 18: C H O L E S T E R O L

ANTI-INFLAMMATORY ANTI-INFLAMMATORY MEASURESMEASURES

• REVISE YOUR DIET: cut trans fats, refined carbs; replace with omega-3s, healthy oils, unrefined carbohydrates like anti-oxidant rich vegetables and fruits

• Add omega-3s• Get a good night’s sleep• Supplement with a high-quality multivitamin/mineral• Take probiotics e.g.yogurt

•MANAGE STRESS !

Page 19: C H O L E S T E R O L

ADVANCED GLYCATION END-ADVANCED GLYCATION END-PRODUCTS (AGEs)PRODUCTS (AGEs)

• Generate a great amount of free radicals• Extensive free radical damage exists in all cases of heart

disease, strokes, diabetes, hypertension, Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease

• AGEs and the free radicals they produce trigger intense inflammatory reactions

• Belly fat secrete large amounts inflammatory chemicals.• A diet high in sugar and refined carbohydrates

dramatically increases the growth of belly fat• Produced by high sugar and refined carbohydrate intake.• Oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids a main cause.

Page 20: C H O L E S T E R O L

WHAT ARE FREE RADICALS ?WHAT ARE FREE RADICALS ?

• Highly unstable atoms or molecules• Oxidation produces free radicals• Damage important molecules such as DNA or

lipids or other parts of the cell• Smoking one of the causes of free radicals• Free radicals responsible for many diseases

including heart disease, cancer, arthritis• Contribute to aging process

Page 21: C H O L E S T E R O L

BEWARE OF THESE OILS !BEWARE OF THESE OILS !

• Corn oil• Safflower oil• Sunflower oil• Soybean oil• Peanut oil• Canola oil

Page 22: C H O L E S T E R O L

VEGETABLE OILSVEGETABLE OILS

• Pro-inflammatory

• Long chain fatty acids, very fragile and unstable

• Turn rancid easily when exposed to heat, light and air

• Even light frying or exposure to strong sunlight would oxidise them

• In fact becomes rancid at factory level

Page 23: C H O L E S T E R O L

HORRORS OF STATINS 1HORRORS OF STATINS 1

• Deplete co-enzyme Q10

• Change, weaken, damage or destroy muscle (depending on dose)

• Do not slow down or reverse arteriosclerosis – the main reason for the prescription

• Induce sudden total memory loss

• Increase eye cataract risk

Page 27: C H O L E S T E R O L

HORRORS OF STATINS 2HORRORS OF STATINS 2

• Suppress immune function

• Linked to the development of cancer

• Cause rhabdomyolysis

• Linked to liver and kidney damage

• Linked to nerve damage

• Induce muscle pain

• Shorten normal life-span

TRANS FATTRANS FAT

DEFINITION• A type of oil normally made by reacting vegetable with

hydrogen (they are then called partially hydrogenated vegetable oils).

• Trans fats are formed during the heating and frying of oils at high temperatures and during processing of edible oils.

• They are linked to the clogging of arteries and heart disease, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and cancer

• Even very tiny amounts are harmful

Page 33: C H O L E S T E R O L

• Maintain right body weight

• KEEP POSITIVE MENTAL ATTITUDE

Page 38: C H O L E S T E R O L

MENTAL ATTITUDEMENTAL ATTITUDE

• Anger, unforgiving attitude, pessimism and low self esteem can seriously damage your heart.

• Anger can raise the risk of a second heart attack by a shocking 700%

Page 39: C H O L E S T E R O L

WILLIAM JAMESWILLIAM JAMES

• “The greatest discovery of this generation was the ability we have to change our environment by changing our mental attitude.”

• Similarly, it is a lot easier for us to change our own individual attitude, lifestyle, and eating habits than to change the commercial policies of fast-food industries or those of food manufacturers.
