HOOK A LISTENER IN LESS THAN 60 SECONDS

An elevator pitch is a brief, persuasive speech that you use to spark interest in what your organization

does. Great pitches are concise, clear, powerful, and use words that create a visual image for the

listener*.

*“for the listener” should mean—if at all possible— a tailored message that speaks to the listener’s

needs or concerns. Having an idea of how to “sell” to different audiences in advance increases your

success.

Elements can include:

The Hook – grab their attention (Pull them in with a question)

Brief description of campaign

What the campaign does / what purpose does it serve?

Who are the donors (target audience)

How it benefits the donor to participate

Partnerships – how does this connect them to UCF and to our community?

How they can make a difference (why they should care about what you’re telling them)

17

Examples from your fellow advocates:

“Have you heard of the United Way? The United Way Campaign allows you to give back to the community financially or by

volunteering. Do you already contribute time and money? In the last 30 years, workplace giving has donated over $2 million!”

“One of the core values of the University of Central Florida (UCF) is community and we have a long standing tradition of giving

back to our local area. One way that UCF gives to their community is through the United Way campaign. If you have a few

minutes, I want to share with you how you can make a difference. We make it very easy for you to get started.”

“Have you ever donated before? With the United Way, you have the option to give to ANY charity of your choice through payroll

deduction. In the last 30 years, workplace giving has donated over $2 million!”

“Are you currently donating to charities?” why not give through the United Way Campaign? The United Way Campaign is a way

to give back through the UCF Community. They have 52 Agencies that are supported by this campaign, but if your charity is not

listed you can still donate to them. It makes donating more convenient for you and the funds come from payroll deduction.

(If you are wearing the United Way shirt and someone asks what it is for) “This is for UCF’s United Way Campaign! It’s a

campus-wide annual fundraiser in which we provide community support. Support for veterans, students of all grade levels,

neighbors, your coworkers- our Central Florida community. This campaign funds community efforts such as homeless shelters,

mentorship opportunities, activities for children, and food for the hungry. It is an easy way to donate! You can even choose your

specific organizations!”

Your Elevator Pitch (Hook <60)

Choose an Audience:

Leadership Donor New Donor Department Chair/Dean

Wildcard – blind pitch Someone with a negative view of the campaign
