IEP’s in Reading IEP’s work the same way in reading as in other subjects. They are individualized plans to best help the student. They require necessary accommodations and modifications for the student, depending on which area of reading the student needs extra help with. These may include various opportunities for assistive technology. There are a numerous different ways to accommodate these students. Audio books Larger font Typed assignments Allington’s Three-Tier Model This model helps to cater to the needs of every student in the classroom. Tier 1- High quality, comprehensive classroom reading instruction Tier 2- Small-group (five students or fewer) supplemental instructional support Tier 3- Intensive, very small groups (two or three students) or one-on-one tutorial instruction (extended day school model) Collaboration Teacher-Teacher collaboration is important to pass on the level of reading that a student is at. When a teacher is collaborating with another teacher, they should also share the improvement of the student. It would be beneficial to share which tier, of the three-tier model, each student is at so that they may be aware of how each student learns best. Teacher-Parent collaboration is also important as the parents need to be aware of the progress of their child. It is also important in order to inform the parents if there is a need for an IEP or a concern for their child.
