To that end, Illinois Senate Bill 888 came out of commiee on Mar. 14 and will soon go for a vote before the full Senate. This bill has been dubbed the “Community College Bachelor of Science in Nursing” bill. Sponsored by Senator Andy Manar of the 48th Sen- ate District (DuPage County) and supported by Vermilion County’s Senator Sco Benne, the CC BSN bill seeks to grant community colleges the right to establish a baccalaureate-level nursing education program. The bill puts a limit of 20 on the number of community colleges programs that would be able to participate. The State’s other 20-or-so community col- leges would have to wait until the last quarter 2022 to be eligible. To be one of the pioneer colleges, DACC has to be ready to launch into BSN education as soon as the bill becomes law. Vice President Dave Kieꜩmann says that DACC has all of the right stuff: “We’ve got doctoral-qualified faculty for nursing, a nationally accredited program, superior facilities, top-notch healthcare partners for clinical studies, a great success record in our students’ pass rates for national licen- sure, and visionary leadership in Nursing Director Mimi Skinner and Dean Kathy Sturgeon.” A DACC Bachelor’s Degree? Vice President Kieꜩmann also points out that the dif- ference between an associate in nursing and a bach- elor in nursing is “an additional year of courses.” He says, “In an associate-degree program, our nursing students have already completed three years of stud- ies, which includes experience in clinics and hospi- tals. To be in the bachelor’s program, they will have already passed their NCLEX (licensing exam) and become registered nurses.” DACC has built close partnerships with senior insti- tutions that provide seamless transfer between the associate and the bachelor’s degree in nursing. Frank- lin University, Eastern Illinois University, and most recently Lakeview College all offer DACC associate- in-nursing graduates the opportunity to earn a bach- elor’s degree in a year by taking those additional courses online. Of course, if DACC were to have its own BSN—well, it just doesn’t get more seamless than that. Both the Illinois Community College Trustees Asso- ciation and the Illinois Community College Board are the chief supporters of the bill. Their pitch to legisla- tors is three-pronged: first, the Community College BSN provides a more affordable path for students; second, this will help bolster the quality of the nurs- ing workforce to help meet the increasingly complex demands of regional and national healthcare; and third, this will help decrease the State’s higher-educa- tion costs. As you can well imagine, though, the 10 senior public universities are “willing to go to the mat to stop this bill”—as Southern Illinois University President Randy Dean has said. Dr. Dean has also relentlessly criti- cized community colleges’ record in providing qual- ity nursing education.

This may be one of those wild-and-crazy longshots. The odds would be right up there with your chances of running into Beyonce at Custard Cup. Even so, as they say in lotteries, “Ya gotta be in it to win it.”

Just so you know: DACC’s in it.

What we’re in: We joined a group of about a dozen Illinois community colleges declaring that they are ready to prepare bachelor’s-degree trained nurses, should the State of Illinois grant such an authority to community colleges. To that end, Illinois Senate Bill 888 came out of committee on Mar. 14 and will soon go for a vote before the full Senate. This bill has been dubbed the “Community College Bachelor of Science in Nursing” bill.

Sponsored by Senator Andy Manar of the 48th Sen-ate District (DuPage County) and supported by Vermilion County’s Senator Scott Bennett, the CC BSN bill seeks to grant community colleges the right to establish a baccalaureate-level nursing education program. The bill puts a limit of 20 on the number of community colleges programs that would be able to participate. The State’s other 20-or-so community col-leges would have to wait until the last quarter 2022 to be eligible.

To be one of the pioneer colleges, DACC has to be ready to launch into BSN education as soon as the bill becomes law. Vice President Dave Kietzmann says that DACC has all of the right stuff: “We’ve got doctoral-qualified faculty for nursing, a nationally accredited program, superior facilities, top-notch healthcare partners for clinical studies, a great success record in our students’ pass rates for national licen-sure, and visionary leadership in Nursing Director Mimi Skinner and Dean Kathy Sturgeon.”

A DACC Bachelor’s Degree?Vice President Kietzmann also points out that the dif-ference between an associate in nursing and a bach-elor in nursing is “an additional year of courses.” He says, “In an associate-degree program, our nursing students have already completed three years of stud-ies, which includes experience in clinics and hospi-tals. To be in the bachelor’s program, they will have already passed their NCLEX (licensing exam) and become registered nurses.”

DACC has built close partnerships with senior insti-tutions that provide seamless transfer between the associate and the bachelor’s degree in nursing. Frank-lin University, Eastern Illinois University, and most recently Lakeview College all offer DACC associate-in-nursing graduates the opportunity to earn a bach-elor’s degree in a year by taking those additional courses online.

Of course, if DACC were to have its own BSN—well, it just doesn’t get more seamless than that.

Both the Illinois Community College Trustees Asso-ciation and the Illinois Community College Board are the chief supporters of the bill. Their pitch to legisla-tors is three-pronged: first, the Community College BSN provides a more affordable path for students; second, this will help bolster the quality of the nurs-ing workforce to help meet the increasingly complex demands of regional and national healthcare; and third, this will help decrease the State’s higher-educa-tion costs.

As you can well imagine, though, the 10 senior public universities are “willing to go to the mat to stop this bill”—as Southern Illinois University President Randy Dean has said. Dr. Dean has also relentlessly criti-cized community colleges’ record in providing qual-ity nursing education.

Purely out of curiosity, we checked out the NCLEX pass rates at SIU and DACC. According to a Dec. 2015 report from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, the NCLEX passing percent-ages are as follows:

Southern Illinois University: 77

DACC: 91

So even if this bill never passes, at least DACC can take comfort in knowing that 91 percent of our nursing students do.

6Did You Know?By: Lisa Osborne, Employee Development Team

This month’s interview was with Culinary Instructor, Dana Wheeler. She has been with the department for five years. Dana teaches a morning and afternoon section of College Express as well as adult classes for the certification program. She is also responsible for the organization and presentation of all special functions that are performed by the college. Dana has been in the food industry her whole life. She owned What’s Cooking Catering in Danville for 18 years and managed the Danville Boat Club for four years before she came to DACC. Dana says she is very blessed to be here and loves what she is doing. She hopes to transfer her enthusiasm and passion to her students pursuing a position in culinary.

Dana was joined by Brad Wheeler last year. He is responsible for teaching an afternoon College Express class and helping with additional functions for the department. Brad is very involved with the Farm to Fork Project. He comes to DACC as a retired Danville Correctional Center counselor, where he was responsible for various training and classroom activities. He also worked in a meat packing plant when he was 18, as well as several different locations as a butcher over the years. Brad was a co-owner of What’s Cooking Catering.

Starting in the fall of 2016 Terian Reed was hired to instruct a morning College Express class. Terian graduated from Chic-Cooking and Hospitality in Chicago. In addition to teaching for DACC he works at the U of I through Sudeko and feeds all the athletes. He has been instrumental in providing insight on new techniques and trends.

The culinary students are always involved with ongoing catering functions for the college; including meetings from different departments, the NJCAA, and some community events. This year Culinary was responsible for catering the DLO Dinner Theatre. This gave the students real world, hands-on experience in catering.

Currently this department is working with Dr. Penny McConnell on implementing an Associate’s degree in Culinary Arts, which is very exciting because it will allow DACC students to get their degree here, rather than transferring to another college. Culinary has also linked up with the Horticulture program in the Farm to Fork class that will be held in the early summer session.

Dana would like campus to know that students are not required to go through the whole Culinary program, a student could take Culinary courses as electives for other degrees. An individual could also take just one course if they wanted to learn more about baking or sauce making. Dana is very proud of the hard work and time that her students put into their classes. She says, “When they have their certification I feel very comfortable with the fact that they can go out and get employment using Culinary Arts at DACC as a reference.”

DACC Hosts 11th Annual Car ShowThe Danville Area Community College Technology Division will host the 11th Annual Open House and Car & Truck Show on Saturday, May 27, 2017, in the Technology Center Parking Lot at DACC. DACC to Host National Tournament for 24th YearDanville Area Community College and the city of Danville will again host the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II Men’s Na-tional Basketball Tournament at the DACC campus March 21-25, 2017. Tournament pairings will not be available until later in March. This year marks the 24th year that Danville has hosted the tournament and the 32nd year of the tournament.

Please note new game times for the 2017 tournament! One of the major reasons for the change is to give each team playing in the championship game a day off during the tourney. A tournament pass, which is good for all games, is available for $45.00. Tickets are $8.00 each session/morning, afternoon or evening. Tickets for DACC students and senior citizens are $4.00 and children 6 and under are free for all games.

IRS Taxes and Health InsuranceThe State of Illinois’ Central Management Services (CMS) released the following information on Febru-ary 14, 2017.

You do not need this form to file your taxes. The forms are proof of the 2016 offer and enroll-ment in health insurance coverage.
