The first and most eagerly anticipated project will take place in the spring, when gigantic cranes will descend on the Mary Miller Gym and crews install two heating-ventilation-air-conditioning units on the roof. This work will herald the long-awaited arrival of air conditioning in the Gym. Vice President Mike Cunningham has vowed to do his best to have air conditioning installed in time for the May 15 Commencement. “It’ll require a lot of cooperation between the College the construction crew—which may mean finding alternate venues for some of the events scheduled in the gym so that the work can get done on time,” he says. He also admits, “We’ll need to get lucky, too, especially with the weather.” On the south side of the Campus, the spring will also bring the first phase in the rehabilitation of Jacobs Hall, the former Carnegie Library that the Veterans Administration gave to the College a few years ago. The $2 million construction project will be funded entirely through a gift from the late Julius W. Hegeler II in honor of former DACC President Alice Marie Jacobs. In January, the DACC Board of Trustees will help finalize the proposal and hire an architect to develop buildable plans and oversee construction. “It’s what’s called a ‘vanilla’ design,” says President Nacco about proposed rehabilitation, “with flexible space on the lower level for classes or storage. In keeping with the classical beauty of the building, the upper level will retain the historical look of an elegant gallery surrounded by high windows and featuring four stately columns on a majestically polished floor.” Jacobs Hall’s chief value will be to help relieve over- crowding in the Clock Tower Building, which is the center for the College’s Liberal Arts programs. Says Dean Penny McConnell, “There seems to be a natural affinity for our art department to transition into Jacobs Hall, which would free up space in the Clock Tower for other departments.” Jacobs Hall would also provide a prime location for dance recitals and art displays and chamber-music performances and black-box theatre. In addition, the DACC Foundation would find that the second-floor gallery provides an ideal venue for donor dinners and receptions. Vice President Cunningham worked for several months with a local architect to develop a project estimate for Jacobs Hall that keeps the rehabilitation costs within the $2 million range. “The biggest challenges,” says Mr. Cunningham, “has been to address ADA accessibility concerns with an elevator that connects the two floors.” An economical and efficient “pocket” elevator will operate from ground level beside the building’s granite front steps and connect the two floors. Another challenge has been to find an ideal location for an interior staircase to connect the two levels. Currently, the only way to move from the lower level to the upper level is by going outside the building. Mr. Cunningham says that four additional “large” construction projects could conceivably get underway during 2020. During the Nov. 25 ribbon- cuing ceremony to commemorate DACC’s purchase

Constructing a Vision for DACC 20202020 promises to be a quite a noisy year at DACC. Expect to hear more banging and clanging of construction projects than you’ve experienced around here in quite some time.

He also admits, “We’ll need to get lucky, too, especially with the weather.”

On the south side of the Campus, the spring will also bring the first phase in the rehabilitation of Jacobs Hall, the former Carnegie Library that the Veterans Administration gave to the College a few years ago.

In keeping with the classical beauty of the building, the upper level will retain the historical look of an elegant

gallery surrounded by high windows and featuring four stately columns on a majestically polished floor.”

Jacobs Hall’s chief value will be to help relieve over-crowding in the Clock Tower Building, which is the center for the College’s Liberal Arts programs. Says Dean Penny McConnell, “There seems to be a natural affinity for our art department to transition into Jacobs Hall, which would free up space in the Clock Tower for other departments.”

Jacobs Hall would also provide a prime location for dance recitals and art displays and chamber-music performances and black-box theatre.

Cunningham, “has been to address ADA accessibility concerns with an elevator that connects the two floors.”

An economical and efficient “pocket” elevator will operate from ground level beside the building’s granite front steps and connect the two floors. Another challenge has been to find an ideal location for an interior staircase to connect the two levels. Currently, the only way to move from the lower level to the upper level is by going outside the building.

Mr. Cunningham says that four additional “large” construction projects could conceivably get underway during 2020. During the Nov. 25 ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate DACC’s purchase

of the U.S. Army Reserve, Illinois State Senator Scott Bennett expressed an interest in helping secure funds to rehabilitate the facility.

The top priority in the main building is ADA accessibility from the ground level to the first floor and between the first and second floors. Also the restrooms need to be reconfigured for accessibility.

Some programs can make immediate use of the facility without requiring any construction. The three-bay garage and ground-level “drill room” can accommodate Corporate Education’s forklift-training classes as well as other corporate-education classes that support training for local industry.

The Athletic Department has immediate plans for the Reserve, too. Student-athletes will be able to use the drill room for workouts, while the men’s and wom-en’s golf teams are scoping out the second-floor for training. The former shooting range may be converted into a golf range and built-in golf simulator. Other rooms may be outfitted for simulated putting and chipping.

By next year, too, as work begins to build the Danville casino and resort area, the Reserve would seem to be an ideal location for training casino workers based on its proximity to the 42-acre Southgate tract that the casino will occupy.

The long-term vision for the facility depends on the College securing at least $2 million for a complete upgrade. DACC would then be able to move the nursing and medical imaging departments out of the cramped lower level of the Mary Miller Complex and into what would become the College’s center for health-sciences education.

Not only would the main building provide ample space for nursing, echocardiography, and sonography, the proposed healthcare simulation lab would find a suitable home as well. One of the goals of the DACC Foundation’s “Futures” campaign is to raise $750,000 to fund a Sim Lab that provides healthcare students with an on-site learning experience that replicates a real-world clinical environment.

As for the other three “large” projects that VP Cunningham is preparing for: The State’s “Build Up Illinois” program has committed $2 million for rehabilitating the Clock Tower and $500,000 for the Hegeler Horticulture Center. The sixth construction project that the College is hoping to build in 2020—depending on whether DACC finds about $2 million in funding—is an on-campus turf softball field.

Throw in some relatively “minor” projects like 26,000 square feet of new roof over the Tech Center and carpeting in the Mary Miller Complex, and it’s clear that exciting times are ahead for DACC.

In the lingo of sports teams, 2020 is shaping up to be a really big “rebuilding” year for us.

Grant Award for “Life Skills”Employers are constantly lamenting the fact that “too many of the workers we have lack the common-sense skills they need to keep a job.”

DACC just found a way to fund a program to teach common sense to job seekers and incumbent work-ers. The Illinois Community College Board awarded $225,000 for the “Bridge and Innovation” grant to DACC to fund the College’s Innovative Transitions Program.

Operations Vice President Kerri Thurman, Executive Vice President Dave Kietzmann, Dean Laura Wil-liams, and Assistant Vice President Brian Hensgen teamed up to design the winning program and suc-cessful application. Says VP Thurman, “The primary focus will be on unemployed and underemployed adults. But the program will also assist incumbent workers who need to upgrade skills to remain em-ployed as well as student veterans.”

The grant will fund “life skills” educational train-ing for three different types of students. The first are those who are simultaneously earning their high-school equivalency as well as a job credentials, such as in a certified nursing assistant program. The second group are job seekers who need short-term technical-skills training prior to employment. The third group are College graduates who need to be prepared for success in the working world.

The program addresses what has become the chief concern among local employers—namely, that too many of today’s job seekers lack a practical under-standing of how to be successful employees. As Lori Russell of DynaChem said during last month’s DACC-hosted breakfast meeting with manufacturers, “What many employees today really lack is what we call ‘soft skills’—or should I say, life skills. We can teach them the fundamentals of a job, but too many of the people we hire are not adequately prepared when it comes to understanding how to hold and keep a job or to advance in a job to a supervisory level.”

The grant will fund a new two-hour Corporate Edu-cation program that Director Stephanie Yates recently developed in collaboration with business leaders. The program addresses both the personal ethic and the work ethic, and crosses all industry sectors.

SUAA Dues IncreaseAt the Fall SUAA Board meeting, the delegates approved a dues increase to keep up with the cost of doing business. SUAA has lost members due to retiree deaths; the state office coped with the decreased income by eliminating a staff position, the Executive Director declining a pay increase in 2018, eliminating travel reimbursement to SUAA annual and fall meeting, etc.

It’s been 8 years since our DACC-AA/SUAA dues have increased. Starting January 1, 2020, dues will increase from $35 a year to $42 a year.

You can get the old rate of $35 if you join before December 30, 2019. Two ways to still get the old rate:

1. Join online before December 31, 2019

www.suaa.org/join-suaa-now Click on the link to “Join NOW!” and follow the prompts. If you have problems, call the SUAA office for help Phone: (217) 523-4040

2. Join by mailing your $35 check (payable to SUAA) di-rectly to the SUAA state office so that it is postmarked by December 30, 2019.
