NEW GRADUATION

HONORS SYSTEM

BROADENS RECOGNITION

In the spring of 2011 the District 126 Board of

Education approved the Cum Laude system as a

replacement for the upper 10% formula for

recognizing graduating seniors. The Cum Laude

system has been in place since the 2011-2012

School Year. It was also determined that the

distinguishing of Valedictorian and Salutatorian

would be discontinued after the Class of 2015. The

District’s rationale for the change was to eliminate

the outmoded recognition system in order to honor

more students for their academic accomplishments.

Adopting this new system will also provide

additional flexibility for students by encouraging

them to take non-weighted classes that relate to

their interests and career goals. Class rank will still

be established and used solely for the purpose of

college applications and scholarships. For more

information, contact Director of Student Services

Steve Richter, at 847-731-9340.

FREE ONLINE TUTORING

FROM ZB PUBLIC LIBRARY

The ZB Public Library offers free

online tutoring from 2-11 p.m.

daily. Students connect with a LIVE

tutor who chats online with them in

order to help them answer questions. Students need

a ZB Library Card to access this resource. Please

visit http://zblibrary.info/ under eResources or call

847-872-4680 for more information.

Students can also find homework help at

www.zbths.org. ZBTHS students’ help is under

“IMC”, then “Research”. (It is necessary to log in

with school log in and password.) NT@ZB students

go to the www.ntzb.org, under “Resources”, then

“Media Center”.

World Studies English class is her favorite subject. Mikaeli has found Ms. Stanley, Mikaeli’s Power Skills / Public Speaking teacher, as

kind, helpful, and a teacher who encourages her students to do their best. Mikaeli is thinking about joining Rock-n-Roll Club later this

year. After high school, Mikaeli, who is New Tech’s Schuler Scholar, plans on attending Stanford University and majoring in literature

and creative writing or psychology. The project based learning, which helps Mikaeli learn through completing projects, is what Mikaeli

have Mikaeli as a student at New Tech.

with her students. Justin is a proud member of Tech Crew and finds pride in helping to keep his school’s technology functioning.

When not working on his studies or tinkering with technology, Justin is busy working on his Eagle Scout Rank. After high school,

Justin would like to go to college to major in mathematics and achieve a doctorate degree in computer science. Justin sees himself one

day owning his own company that creates computer operating systems and software. Justin likes his interactions with teachers and

students at New Tech. “Try hard and never give up,” is Justin’s advice to other students. That’s great advice. Justin is becoming a

superb student at New Tech.

college, studying marine biology, and working in the microorganism or marine psychology field. The 21st Century technological skills

and workplace professional skills Jessica is learning are what she likes about New Tech. Try hard with a good attitude are Jessica’s

words to her classmates. On that note…we salute Jessica for her achievements at New Tech and wish her continued success.

SENIOR Demetria Wilkins is the daughter of Marvin and Ashia Wilkins and has lived in Zion for five years. Demetria has

enjoyed all of her science classes at New Tech. Mr. Richardt has impressed Demetria as being a nice teacher who makes Chemistry

to play the violin and piano. Demetria plans on attending college next year and majoring in molecular biology and then one day

becoming a doctor. The small school environment has allowed Demetria to form many friendships with students and staff at New

Tech. “Don’t procrastinate,” are Demetria’s words to her classmates. Good luck Demetria in your future.

BULLYING PREVENTION

At our schools, bullying of any kind, by any person, is unacceptable. All students should

be free from worries about being bullied. Students who bully others must be taught other,

appropriate ways of interacting with peers. The purpose of this letter is to provide you

with information concerning the School District’s anti-bullying program and to

encourage you to help us identify students who are being bullied.

The School Board policy on bullying begins with this goals statement:

Bullying, intimidation, and harassment diminish a student’s ability to learn and a

school’s ability to educate. Preventing students from engaging in these disruptive

behaviors is an important District goal.

Bullying is defined as follows:

Bullying means any severe or pervasive physical or verbal act or conduct,

including communications made in writing or electronically, directed toward a

student that has or can be reasonably predicted to have the effect of one or more

of the following:

1. Placing the student in reasonable fear of harm to the student’s person or

property.

2. Causing a substantially detrimental effect on the student’s physical or mental

health.

3. Substantially interfering with the student’s academic performance.

4. Substantially interfering with the student’s ability to participate in or benefit

from the services, activities, or privileges provided by a school.

Bullying, intimidation, and/or harassment may take various forms, including without

limitation: threats, stalking, physical violence, sexual harassment, theft, public

humiliation, destruction of property, or retaliation for asserting or alleging an act of

bullying.

We asked our school staff members to respond immediately and with compassion to a

student who reports bullying or school violence. After evaluating the situation to

determine if an immediate referral to an administrative office is needed, a staff member

will give the student our form for reporting bullying, Report Form for Bullying and

School Violence. We, or our designee, will inform you whenever your child is involved

in a bullying report.

We also asked our staff members for their feedback and concerns specifically regarding

locations that may be bullying hot spots needing additional supervision or monitoring

or if there are any known bullies or targets of bullying in our building. We want to ask

you to do the same thing. Please inform us if you know of any bullying hot spots in or

around our school, or if you are aware of a known bully or target of bullying.

Finally, we requested our staff members to intervene immediately to stop a bullying

incident. They will immediately contact building security and or law enforcement if the

incident involves a weapon or other illegal activity.

Below are some of the signs that a young person is being bullied:

Does not want to go to school and refuses to explain the reason

Talks about not having any friends

Has unexplained bruises, cuts, scratches, or abrasions

Has unexplained damage to clothing, possessions, books, etc.

Frequently loses money or possessions

Loses interest in school and/or has declining grades

Becomes withdrawn and/or has stress or depression symptoms

These signs do not necessarily mean your child is being bullied, but if present, ask your

child whether he or she is being bullied.

Please contact us, your building principals, with questions or concerns.

PBN GET INVOLVED!

Parent Bee Network (PBN) is our parent

organization for District 126. This group

meets monthly, on the first Thursday of

each month. The group focuses on

sponsoring and supporting wholesome

activities for our students and serving as

chaperones for the various events held at

the school. PBN also works to raise funds

to provide scholarships to graduating

seniors. They also make learning how to

prepare their students for academic

success a priority.

PBN meetings give parents an

opportunity to meet and network with

other parents. During these meetings,

time is provided to share ideas and talk

with the administration. While it may not

be possible to attend every meeting, we

encourage parents to try to find time in

their schedules to attend some of the

meetings or volunteer when possible.

PBN is a great opportunity to get
