Wonderful! The only word to describe

our concert. Singing and playing our

Canadian songs. Our practicing sure

paid off . As always, our Rick organized

it and a wonderful job he did. He

doesn’t get enough thanks. We sang a

lot of the songs at our rest homes and

they loved it. I think the grandest thing

about our club is that we love what we

are doing and that love shows. Many

thanks to all who participated in our

concert. As always we meet Friday

mornings 10:00 am – 11:30 am in

Rotary Hall and everybody is welcome.

September saw the group resume

meetings. We selected 9 images to

display on the cafeteria wall - a very

hard choice as there were so many

great pictures to choose from. We

are now busy working on our next

two challenges of tartan and musical

instruments. We continue to have

our Lightroom sessions at noon prior

to the main meeting. Our education

component consisted of question

and answers and hands on learning

with our camera and manuals. Our

September fi eld trip was to Paradise

Meadows where we enjoyed the

Whiskey Jacks obliging us by posing

on our hands. We meet the fi rst and

third Tuesdays in the Soroptimist

Room at 1:00 pm (or 12 if you want to

sit in on the Lightroom session).

Many of you may well fi nd life is much

quieter now as summer activities wind

down, however, no need to be bored.

It’s a good time to learn a new craft

and perhaps get started on Christmas

gift ideas - children, grandchildren

and great grandchildren love to show

their friends an attractive ,hand craft ed

item that their mother or grandmother

has made especially for them. The

wide choice of patterns and colours

that are available make it easy to fi nd

something that will please any age.

Drop in to the Craft Room, Thursdays

underway and ask any questions you

might have. We’re always delighted

category but this could vary depending on the specifi c activity.

Courtenay/Comox is in Zone 2 which includes Campbell River, Fanny Bay,

Ladysmith, Parksville, Port Alberni and Qualicum Beach. Zone 2 placed 4th

this year winning a total of 199 medals. The Zone is again divided into areas and

Courtenay/Comox is area 4 which stretches from Fanny Bay to Black Creek.

The 2016 55+ BC Games will be held in Coquitlam September 20-24th so why

not join the team and have some fun! “ Men and women do not quit playing

because they grow old, they grow old because they quit playing. “ Oliver

The Book Club meets the fi rst

Monday of the Month at 1:00pm in

the Soroptimist Lounge. We are a

group of people who enjoy reading

all genres. Some enjoy fi ction, others

non-fi ction, while others read the Best

Sellers at the moment.

At our meetings we just share with

each other what we have read and

enjoyed and maybe for some, a not so

enjoyable read.

One book shared at our last meeting

was “Requeim” by Frances Itani - a

story about the removal of Japanese

people from the West Coast during

the 1940’s. The story goes on further

to follow one man in his attempt to

fi nd his family and discover his past.

You are more than welcome to join

us and if you want further information,

Book Club Happy GangThe Happy Gang is back on form,

To play with us, you need an

Evergreen Club membership,and a

toonie a week. We always welcome

new members.

On September 8th, Happy Gang

and Heartstrings members met in

the aft ernoon at the Kitty Coleman

campgrounds. Eighteen members

came to play music and have a picnic.

I hear a good time was had, in spite of

the cooler weather.

Our best wishes for a full recovery

goes out to Pat Smith, (our drummer)

aft er a serious fall, at home.

Liza ([email protected])

Our September get-together opened

with a welcome to all our members.

We acknowledged those who had

September birthdays. Aft er a short

meeting we were entertained by Ian

McGlynn who sang and played the

guitar also shared some experiences

and other topics. His performance

was very enjoyable and he has

off ered to come again. Tea and coff ee

was served prior to the close of the

meeting.

On Saturday, September 12th we

met at the A&W where we treated

the Classic Car Drivers to lunch, aft er

which we went in their cars for a long

ride. It was a beautiful sunny day

allowing the tops to be down on the

convertibles. Those who rode in them

were very pleased as were the others

in the regular cars. There were 15 cars

and drivers who came out.

Everyone was hoping we could have

another fun day playing mini golf on

September 17 – hoping it wouldn’t

rain!

Our monthly lunch was at Glacier

Tuesday,October 13th & Tuesday, October 27th, 20154:30 pm - 6:15 pm Rotary HallWell our Club, for the most part,

is back in the swing of things. Two

sessions already done with some great

new songs and music. The singing is

sounding better than ever, and the

group seems to improve by the day,

even if I do say so myself.

Our Club is designed to enjoy playing

the Uke, and the joy of singing along.

For the most part we do not give

lessons, but workshops are being

discussed. Our music is sent to us

via our computer, from which we can

practice as much as we like. In session

the songs are displayed on a screen,

so there is no need of paper. We start

our sessions with simple songs and

chords, and with the last 45 minutes

we use chords that are a bit more

complicated.

I must stress that with a bit of practice,

anything we play or sing is doable, by

anyone!

If you are thinking you might be

interested in joining us, please come

down to a session, and sit in and

listen; we are a friendly group. We do

have a loaner Uke, which aft er signing

out, can be taken home and used for

a couple of weeks. This will give you a

good idea of whether or not you wish

to purchase your own.

Our only requirement is a current

August 28th and 4 person best ball

that had the winning score of 29. The

players were: Syvil Fearn, Kelvin Davis,

Joan Hicks, John Enns and the second

team winners were Angela Iverson,

George Allan, Lucy Wallis and Victor

Simonson. The ladies KP was won by

Syvil Fearn and the men’s by Bruno

Fornika. Well done all of you. Thank

you once again to Longlands Golf

Club for providing tea, coff ee and

winners.

We had a great trip to Arrowsmith

especially for those playing 18 holes.

When I say trip, one of our members

took that literally and came a cropper

on the ninth tee breaking his ankle.

I know how that feels, Russ, though I

broke mine coming off the 5 green.

Sad to say the golf season will soon be

you have all signed up for this FUN

there was interest especially in regard

CLUB NEWS

Have you ever been asked to “red the

table”? I’ll tell you all about it at the

end of the business part.

Our next meeting will be taking place

on Thursday, October 15th at 1 p.m.

upstairs in the Soroptomist Lounge.

We will be having a presentation from

Norma O’Toole , one of our long

time valued members. Norma will be

telling us about what she learned at the

Ottawa Genealogy Clubs Conference

which she has just attended. She has

gone to numerous conferences and

says that no matter how many you go

to you always learn something new.

I’m looking forward to hearing her talk.

Now back to “red” or “rid”! When I

was growing up my mother always

referred to clearing up aft er a meal

as “red the table”. I was in Kingston,

Ontario where her people came to in

the 1840’s from Somerset, England

and from Northern Ireland. We

were visiting a former B.C. fellow

in Kingston a few years ago and I

off ered to “red the table”. He started

laughing and said he had only heard

one other person ever say that and

that was a friend who lives on an island

outside Kingston and her family had

been there for centuries. Even though

my mother had been born and raised

in Manitoba this old saying seems to

have been passed down to me and

my family. I can’t help wondering if

it was an Irish or an English saying. If

anyone knows please let me know. I

imagine the word is rid but with an

accent pronounced red.

New members are always welcome

and there are no drop in fees. Hope

to see you on the 15th.

HeartstringsHere it is September already and the

kids are back at school again where

did the summer go. Both groups

got together and decided to have

an outdoor concert and picnic at

Kitty Coleman so it was arranged for

September 8th. Around 2’o clock in

the aft ernoon the gang met out there

with their instruments and amplifi ers

and set up to play. Although it was

very cold, with the wind coming off

the water, they played for an hour and

15 minutes.

We even had some visitors from the

camp ground come by and listen. It

was then time to have the picnic and

we all crowded by a camp fi re to keep

warm: it was an aft ernoon of friends

getting together and having fun.

There was even a birthday boy, Roy

Pardiac,and birthday cake which we

all enjoyed. We hope you all had a

great summer and we look forward to

seeing you on Wednesday mornings

to hear some old songs and some not

so old and don’t forget if you play an

instrument please feel free to come

and join us and make some new

friends or maybe join some old friends.

“Keeping the ball rolling!”Ana & Barry Graham are the backbone of our Carpet Bowling Club. Ana

is the club president and her husband Barry is the treasurer. The Grahams

moved back to the Comox Valley nine years ago from Australia (originally

moving to BC in ‘73 and then they returned to the land down under again

in ‘94.) The coastline of Comox reminded them of their homestead in

Tasmania ~Australia’s southernmost island state. Ana was born in Croatia,

and then immigrated to Australia as a refugee. Fate had her marry her ‘Barry.’

Ana’s role as president has her organizing teams, alternating as committee rep

at the meetings and organizing the volunteering within their club. Bowlers

get scheduled to take turns setting up the carpets and setting up the kitchen

refreshments. This duo also organizes the North Island Triple’s, yearend banquets,

and Christmas socials for their fellow carpet bowlers. Ana says, “It’s a lot of phone

calling.” They both say, “We didn’t create the success of this club. Many people

created it. There are a lot of background volunteers.” The Grahams have created

an inclusive environment where it’s more of a social event than a competitive

‘win win’ feeling. “We have about 45 bowlers. We get people from all diff erent

backgrounds; it’s a cross section of the older generation. Some have money,

some don’t, “Barry trails off then laughs, “Some have bossy wives, some don’t...”

Curious about this game? Come on out and watch. Carpet bowling is a

game of skill. It takes practice to perfect your technique. Ron Webber,

a relatively new carpet bowler, adds, “They are very dedicated, reliable

and supportive of the team members, especially the newcomers.” The

Grahams are thankful for the wonderful facility the Evergreen Club off ers and

appreciates the deal of only having to put a loonie into the pot each time.

“We have many visiting teams that come here and are very jealous of what we’ve

got going on, “says Barry

Thanks for “keeping the ball rolling’ you two!
