    PENANCE/RECONCILIATIONSaturday: 4:00pm-4:45pmSunday: 7:45am-8:15am and 9:30am-9:(also by appointment)

    Second Sunday of LentScripture

I will bless you abundantly and make your descendants as countless as the stars of

    the sky (Genesis 22:27)

...you have loosed my bonds. Psalm 116:16

He who did not spare his own Son but handed him over for us all, how will he not

also give us everything else along with him? (Romans 8:32)

he was transfigured before them, his clothes became dazzling white, (Mark 9:2b)

looking around, they no longer saw anyone but Jesus alone with them. (Mark

    9:8)

    Reflection

Is there any part of God withheld from those who love God?

How have you experienced Gods loving presence? Can it be described?

Is it possible to stay at the mountaintop experience of Jesus indefinitely?

Is it possible to hold Jesus loving presence with you always?

What are you called to do with Gods presence?

The Word was made flesh. (John 1:14) These words give expression to that heavenlymystery and that admirable sacrament, that magnificent work of infinite kindness whichconsists in the fact that the eternal God has humbly bent down and lifted the dust of ournature into unity with His own person. (St. Bonaventure)1

    SAINT MICHAELS MISSION STATEMENT

Saint Michaels Catholic Community is a group of Catholic Christians associated with the Arme

Forces under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the Archdioceses for the Military Service

served by the pastoral leadership of our priest(s), deacon(s), and religious. The community is ded

cated to exemplifying Christian community by proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Chri

through worship, service, and witness to the people of Fort Gordon and surrounding communities

Bless me, Father, for I have sinnedIf you haven't gone to confession in a while, Lent is the perfect time to reconcile your-self with God and the Church. Our parish has a communal penance service on March28th, 2012 at 7pm with prayers and Scripture readings, followed by the opportunity forindividual confession (a necessity for absolution of mortal sins). You can also make a

private appointment with a priest. For dates and times check the cover page of thisbulletin. Preparation for confession should include an examination of conscience, whichmeans you think back on sins you have committed since your last confession. Whathappens during confession depends on the priest and the person. Most people still startwith the formula: "Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It has been (state the number ofmonths or years) since my last confession." If you can't remember the words or youdon't recall how long it's been, don't worry. Just tell the priest it's been a long time, andhe will guide you through the process. What you will experience is the healing gift ofGod's love, the chance to start over with a clean conscience, and an overwhelming senseof gratitude.Retrieved from http://www.osv.com/

Giving alms has always been an important part of Lent. For manypeople, it means giving money to Catholic charities or some othergood cause.

But the concept of almsgiving goes much deeper. It is our re-sponse to the teachings of Jesus that encourage us to reach out to

people in neednot just with our money but with our time andour talents. Today we might call it 'stewardship.'

Lent gives us the opportunity to cultivate a spirit of generosity. Itgives us a chance to share what we have and who we are with other

people. It puts us in communion with others and helps us under-stand that we are all members of the Body of Christ.

Think carefully about how you will share your time, your talentsand your treasure during Lent. Keep in mind the words of the Lord

Jesus who himself said, "It is more blessed to give than to re-ceive" (Acts 20:35).

Mercy and CompassionCompassion and Mercy Allow us to Follow Christs Footsteps

ompassion, briefly stated, can be thought of as shared suffering and the desire to relieve it -- the feeling thatyouruffering is also my suffering, and that only by relieving both can we both be free of our burden. Mercy is compas-on shown to those who see themselves as your enemies. By way of a Christian example, Christ assuming andying for the sins of humankind was an intensely compassionate act. He felt and shared in our suffering, and gaves the opportunity to relieve ourselves of that terrible weight through self-sacrifice and the blessings of faith. Com-assion is closely related to the feeling ofempathy, which means "feeling with" or even "feeling into" another person. Empathy and compassion are mostly a mattew simple truths:ther people are real; they think and feel, just as we do ourselves. This may seem like common sense, but it's incredible how often we ignore the truth of thisent. Why are we able to turn a blind eye to the suffering of others? In part, because our lives are increasingly complicated and full, with every waking moment

ver to fulfilling our wants and desires. It takes a long time to train oneself to put the wants and desires of others above our own, but, as Jesus says in MatthewGive to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you" (NIV). In order to live more like Christ, we must raise ourselv

cknowledge the reality of others, and not shy from the discomfort of looking on the poor, the sick, or the people with whom we have disagreements or animosity.'s possible for us to understand what another person is thinking and feeling, with or without having been told. The face, in particular, is the most expressivf the body. Clinical psychologists have demonstrated that over 3000 distinct combinations of facial expressions carry emotional meaning, everything from smowns to flaring nostrils to a wrinkled brow or an arched eyebrow. Through the simple act of looking people in the face, we can better understand their thoughelings.

We are all children connected through the heart of God; when one of us suffers, the happiness of all of us decreases. 1 Corinthians 12:26 tells us: " If onsuffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it" (NIV). The bible teaches us that sadness, depressionfrustration in our lives are not always of our own making -- when there are others suffering in the world, we, too, suffer with them, albeit itle and mysterious ways which we may not properly comprehend. The plain truth of the matter is that we are happier and better satisfiedwe are around other happy, well-satisfied people. Try introducing small acts of kindness into your life -- buy a coworker a sandwich w

being asked, open the door for a stranger at the bank, or simple listen to someone who seems like they need to talk. Actively helping othera compassionate mindset is one of the best ways to make both of you happier and holier through the relief of your mutual suffering. The Golden Rule. The three basic truths of compassion outlined above have been boiled down to a practical, fundamental precept, popknown as "The Golden Rule": do to others what you would have them do to you. If we each take sensible action to improve the lives of around us, all of our lives will improve together. This is the practical magic of the compassion Jesus so selflessly championed -- how aworking to follow in his footsteps?Written by: Bob Robertson. Retrieved from http://www.sharefaith.com

Mary the miraculous imprint of Christ's face on the cloth. Onood Friday, the Siete Palabras (Seven Last Words of Christ) are recited until 3 P.M. after which the Santoepulkro is fetched by male devotees from the recamadero (the keeper of the image) for "burying" in church.

Live CrucifixionsFor a colorful display of penitence on Good Friday, head to the town San Pedro Cutudwhere men have themselves actually nailed to a cross after reenacting the Via Crucis, aKapampangan rendition of the passion play. Dozens of hooded flagellants walk aroundwhom either are beating their bloody backs with bamboo floggers, crawling on dirt

    roads or bearing crosses.Moriones

From Holy Monday to Easter Sunday, don't be surprised to find costumed men andwomen in Roman centurion masks parading the streets. These masked and costumed

penitents are the Moriones and they're re-enacting the story of Longinus, a half-blindcenturion who converted to Christianity when his eyesight was fully restored afterChrist's blood spurted into his blind eye upon piercing his side. When the other centuri-ons hear of his conversion, he is hunted down and beheaded.

Manila: Visita IglesiaFilipinos favorite Holy Week ritual is the Visita Iglesia, where they visit sevenchurches in a single evening. Why seven? The roots of this tradition come from an earlyChristian practice of visiting the seven great basilicas of Rome. Manila has a long list of

d churches dating back to the Spanish regime, now considered as priceless cultural heritage sites.oly Week is a significant religious festival in the Philippines. Retrieved from http://www.about.com
