    MASS SCHEDULE

This Sunday is the second to last Sunday of our liturgical year. As we approach the end of the Church year, ourospel invites us to consider Jesus' predictions and teaching about the end of the world. In the context of Mark'sospel, Jesus' words about this are spoken to his disciples as he prepares them for his passion and death. Before we

onsider Jesus' words, it is important to note the political backdrop against which many think Mark's Gospel wasritten. Most scholars concur that Mark wrote his Gospel for Christians living in or near Rome about 30 to 40 years

fter the death of Jesus. This was a time of political turmoil in Rome. Some Christians experienced persecution bye Romans during the reign of the emperor Nero (about 64 A.D.). Jewish revolutionaries rebelled against the Ro-

mans, which led the Romans to destroy the Temple in Jerusalem in 70 A.D. In this time of political turmoil and per-ecution, many in Mark's community might have wondered if the end times predicted by Jesus were in fact quiteear. Last Sunday we heard Jesus' observation about the contributions being made to the temple treasury and thexample of sacrificial giving that he saw in the poor widow's offering. If we had been reading Mark's Gospel con-

nuously, we would have heard Jesus predict the destruction of the Temple, his teaching about the costs of disciple-hip, and the woes that will accompany the end times. Finally, we would have heard Jesus instruct his disciplesbout the need for watchfulness so that they will not be caught unprepared for this final day of judgment. In today'sospel, Jesus continues this teaching by offering his disciples signs to look for that will indicate that the coming ofe Son of Man is near. His words and images draw upon Old Testament imagery, especially images found in theook of Daniel. Next, Jesus offers the lesson of the fig tree, a parable that teaches that if one knows how to read thegns, one can be prepared for the end times. Jesus also teaches, however, that no one knows when the end time willome, except the Father. In the verses that follow this reading in Mark's Gospel, Jesus continues to warn his disci-es to be on watch for this end time. Jesus' words are not spoken to frighten his disciples, nor should they frighten

    s. Rather, they are offered to prepare us for the changes we will experience during our lifetimes and at the endmes. Our consolation and hope is found in the lasting nature of Jesus' words and God's never-ending love for us.etrieved from Loyola Press Sunday Connection. http://www.loyolapress.com/sunday-connection.htm

The Pharisee and the PublicanParables of Jesus. Written by Pete Millern Luke 18:9-14, Jesus taught a parable which contains the words that have developed into what is called the Sinners Prayer. Th is parable is in a series of lehich Jesus boldly taught in the presence of Pharisees and other religious leaders, who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others

Earlier, in Luke 14:3, Jesus had asked them, Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath? But they wouldnt even answer Him. In 15:2, the Pharisees and scribesghast with Jesus, that He would stoop so low as to eat with sinners and tax collectors. Later, Jesus told the parable of the unjust steward, and taught that Nant can serve two mastersYou cannot serve God and mammon. Now the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, also heard all these things, and they d

Him.(Luke 16:13, 14) The word derided, in the Greek, literally means that they turned up their noses and ridiculed Jesus. Since Jesus regularly taught inogues, or at the temple in Jerusalem, Pharisees and other religious leaders were always present. Although there were a handful of good-hearted men, many ofeople were greedy and self-righteous. This never intimidated Jesus.

Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank You

m not like other menextortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess. The Pharisee pompously with himself, reminding God of just how holy a man he was, not like other men, men like the tax collector standing nearby. Tax collectors were ced repugnant because they were employees of Rome, government workers who notoriously cheated their own people, overcharging and skimming off the e taxation money and pocketing it for themselves. The Pharisee also reminded God that he skipped breakfast twice a week, and gave ten percent of his assekely not a penny more.

And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, God, be merciful to me a sinner! I te

is man went down to his house justified rather than the other The tax collector bowed his head, and beat his breast, perhaps in an expression like Pau

omans 7:24, O wretched man that I am!He didnt remind God of what God already knows, but simply exclaimed, God, be merciful to me a sinner!aid that this man was more righteous in Gods sight than the proud and puffed -up Pharisee. for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he whoes himself will be exalted. Somehow the Pharisee, so well-versed in the Law of Moses, must have disregarded some of the Proverbs that condemn pride, s

6:5: Everyone proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord. Proverbs 29:23: A mans pride will bring him low, But the humble in spirit will retain hond Proverbs 3:34: Surely He scorns the scornful, but gives grace to the humble. James understood what Jesus taught, and so did Peter. God resists the put gives grace to the humble. (James 4:6) Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time. (1 Peter 5:6)

Paul addressed this prevalent problem among the legalistic Jews, many of whom incessantly attempted to damage his ministry. Referring to Israel, Paul For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant of Gods righ teousness, and seeking to est

eir own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God. (Romans 10:2, 3) This is still a common difficulty today, certainly among peoplollow false gods, but sometimes even among Christians. Being inflated with what is really a false sense of worth is foolish and condemned in Scripture. To tnes own self-righteousness is deception. Humility is required to be submissive and obedient. Obedience to God is literally doin g Gods Word with a heart ond reverence for Him. In the Amplified Bible, Romans 12:16 teaches this lesson succinctly: Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty (snobbish

minded, or exclusive) Never overestimate yourself or be wise in your own conceits.Retrieved from http://www.sharefaith.com

    Lincoln

    By John MulderigCatholic News Service

NEW YORK (CNS) -- With the unsurprisingception of Jesus Christ, more books are sahave been written about President Abraham coln (1809-1865) than about any other persohistory. As for the screen, our most fascinati

and arguably greatest -- chief executive has portrayed by such Hollywood luminaries as WHuston ("Abraham Lincoln," 1930), Henry F(1939's "Young Mr. Lincoln") and RaymMassey ("Abe Lincoln in Illinois," 1940).

The plot focuses on the Civil War presidpassionate yet wily struggle, during the clodays of that conflict, to steer a constitutamendment abolishing slavery through CongAided by his secretary of state, William Se(David Strathairn), but distracted by his troupersonal life -- Sally Field plays his famously-strung wife, Mary -- Lincoln uses rhetoric toover his hesitant Cabinet and patronage to wocongressional opponents.

As for the Great Emancipator's ostenallies on Capitol Hill, irascible Rep. ThadStevens of Pennsylvania (a marvelous TommyJones) hurls withering sarcasm at all and suand openly avows his mistrust of Lincoln.

Whether in line with history or not, a sshowing Stevens sharing his bed with his mrace housekeeper presents a curious moral qdary: Assuming that they could not marry bybut would have tied the knot if permitted toguilt, if any, attaching to their relationship have been considerably mitigated by the forunjust circumstances.

Along with the tension created by Mary'srotic behavior, Lincoln is also burdened by over the untimely death of his son Willie two y

Though not ecially close to his oldest son Robert (JoGordon-Levitt) -- whose intense desire to joiArmy poses a threat to Mary's sanity, and presents his father with a terrible dilemma --coln dotes on his youngest child, Tad (GulMcGrath). Like the Lincoln marriage, howtheir touching bond is tinged by the tragedWillie's absence.

The trajectory of Spielberg's tale is, by itture, uplifting, while Lincoln's multifaceted sonality -- which encompassed idealism, polshrewdness, melancholy, humor and even aendearing foibles -- is vividly illuminated in TKushner's screenplay. As his script reveals, ever, Lincoln was not above telling an earthy a

Still, some parents may consider the edtional value and moral import of the film -- wis based, in part, on Doris Kearns Goodwin's book "Team of Rivals: The Political GeniuAbraham Lincoln" -- sufficient to overcomeelements listed below, thus allowing for patroby older adolescents.
