In this issue SAINT MICHAELS MISSION STATEMENTSaint Michaels Catholic Community is a group of Catholic Christians associated w

the Armed Forces under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the Archdioceses for

Military Services served by the pastoral leadership of our priest(s), deacon(s), and

gious. The community is dedicated to exemplifying Christian community by procla

ing the Good News of Jesus Christ through worship, service, and witness to the pe

of Fort Gordon and surrounding communities.

    Monday & Wednesday: 11:30amSaturday: 5:00pmSunday: 8:30am and 10:00am

    RECONCILIATIONSaturday: 4:00pm-4:45pmSunday: 7:45am-and 9:30am

    Scripture

I myself will gather the remnant of my flock from all the lands ... and bring them back (Jeremiah 23:3)

In Christ Jesus you who once were far off have become near by the blood of Christ. (Ephesians 2:13)

When he ... saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without ashepherd; and he began to teach them many things. (Mark 6:34)

    Reflection

Why does Jesus enter the world?

How do you complete His mission?

When do you spread His Word?

    Where is His mission?

By doing things as Jesus would do them, as God would do them, you free God from the veils of invisibility andmake Him visible on Mans journey. Faith is an act, not a series of idle remarks. Hope is an undertaking bathed inight, not a pious sentiment. Charity is an event, not a devotional little prayer. 1

    VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Self-Control as the Fruit of the Spirit. Written by Pete MillerThe Fruit of Self-Control Brings Spiritual Benefits to Believers

alatians 5:22 and 23 lists the fruit of the Spirit. Self-control is positioned last on the bunch of fruit. It is possi-e that it is the last of the fruit because self-control is the most desirable quality attainable and the most chal-nging for humans. It is self-mastery, the opposite of impulsive and reckless behavior, and the opposite of self-dulgence. Self-control is imperative for a Christian walking by the Spirit. Often times the exact timing of Godrequired for success. Believers who lack restraint and are self-willed incur disastrous results.God's Word has potent wisdom in the Proverbs, and 16:32 (NLT) states that it is " better to have self-control

an to conquer a city."Attributed to the Chinese philosopher, Confucius, is the same essence in this statement:He who conquers himself is the mightiest warrior."Even more enlightening is this proverb in 25:28 (NLT),hich says, "A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls."

Self-control should be introduced very early in childhood. However, godlessness, failed marriages, lack ofood parenting, declining educational systems and other factors have produced out of control youth. gang vio-nce, drug and alcohol addictions, unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases, school shootings, andher horrific deviant behaviors are the result.Daniel Webster, American statesman, orator and lawyer, said, "Educate your children to self-control, to the habit of holding passion and prejudice an

ndencies to an upright and reasoning will, and you have done much to abolish misery from their future lives and crimes to society."How accurate he wasTitus communicates leadership principles, and in the list of qualifications in chapter one are these requirements, expecting elders to be "sober-minded

oly, self-controlled."All Christians are instructed to be disciplined followers of the doctrines of the faith, and are taught in Romans to renew their mindhange their thinking from warped worldly ways to God's virtuous and reliable ways. Submission and accountability to each other and to church leaders shelp manage substandard thinking and irrational behavior.

Napoleon Hill, American speaker and motivational writer, said, "Self-discipline begins with the mastery of your thoughts. If you don't control whaink, you can't control what you do. Simply, self-discipline enables you to think first and act afterward."Christians need to lead the way in living orderly, self-disciplined lives. God has enabled Christians to walk with power, demonstrating superior excell

xhibiting the fruit of the Spirit.

Bible study on the book of Nehemiah

The name Nehemiah means Yahweh comforts. This is the message presented in the book of Nehemiah.Within its chapters, the book tells of the courage of one man who withstood relentless harassment andmockery because of his love for God, and for Jerusalem. Nehemiah brought comfort to his fellow brethreny prayerfully pursuing the rebuilding of his beloved homeland.

Over 150 years had gone by since the original invasion and destruction of Jerusalem. Several genera-ions had come and gone. Now Nehemiah was the cupbearer for King Artexerxes, the fifth king of Persia

who reigned from the fortified city of Susa. In the 20th year of the king's reign, Nehemiah was told that theescendants of the Israelites who had returned to Jerusalem nearly 90 years before were in great distressecause the walls and gates of Jerusalem were still in ruins.

Nehemiah's soul was in despair, and he wept and mourned for many days. Without walls, the city was

eft unprotected from the surrounding nations and its people were vulnerable to the attacks of outsiders.Nehemiah greatly longed to return to Jerusalem, and waited four months before approaching the king toequest the journey. But his return would not simply be to see the cityor himself. Nehemiah boldly requested that he be allowed to goack, specifically for the task of rebuilding the city.

Because Nehemiah found favor with God and the king, the kingonored his request. God was with Nehemiah and turned the heart ofhe king to the humble cupbearer, giving him all and more that hesked for. The king provided letters that granted Nehemiah passagehrough neighboring cities, as well as timber for the reconstruction.

The king also sent captains of his army and horsemen as escorts tonsure Nehemiah arrived safely.

The task of rebuilding the wall, however, was not as simple. Ene-mies rose up against Nehemiah and the builders, including pagan men who did not want to see the wallseconstructed. When Nehemiah took his role as the new governor of Jerusalem, he boldly declared thathey no longer had any heritage or rights in Jerusalem. While these enemies continued to hinder the re-uilding, the prophet Malachi continued to encourage Nehemiah and the builders. They completed their

work with their swords girded at their sides, while other workers stood by with spears, shields and armor. After the rebuilding of the walls was completed, there was great celebration and everyone renewed

heir covenant with God. Feasting, prayer and rejoicing continued for some time, as it appeared that all oferusalem had been brought back to its former glory.

But not long after this, upon his return to Jerusalem, Nehemiah discovered that traces of idolatry hadrept in among the people. Some had even taken foreign wives from among some of Israel's worst ene-

mies. Nehemiah, a man who stood for righteousness, boldly confronted the offenders, striking them andulling out their hair, and cursing them for their blatant acts of rebellion. While this may seem like anxtreme over-reaction, it convicted the wrongdoers and stirred the people to correct their wicked ways.

What began in the book of Ezra was completed in the book of Nehemiah. Ezra brought revival to thepiritual disunity and barrenness of the people by overseeing the rebuilding of the temple. Nehemiahrought unity to the people by overseeing the rebuilding of the wall. He also reinforced Ezra's revival by

olding the people accountable to the Law of God.Through his love for the people of God, and his fervent prayer, Nehemiah defied the odds. He encour-ged the people to finish what had been started. Like the Apostle James of the New Testament, Nehemiahhallenged the people to show their faith by their works. Those that had faith in God would trust Him, andontinue walking in His laws.

Prior to the work Nehemiah did in Jerusalem, God prepared another deliverer, an unlikely youngwoman who carried the same courage and dedication as Nehemiah. An orphaned Israelite exile helpedreserve the lives of her people still living in Persia so that years later God could raise up Nehemiah frommong those people to help restore Jerusalem. Her story is told in the book of Esther.

NEW YORK (CNS) -- Few conflicts in the mern era have proved as intractable as that piIsraelis against Palestinians. One institucaught up in this clash has been the Holy LaBethlehem University, a Catholic establish

This, dethe fact that Azzam had nearly completedstudies.

Scenes of real-life violence and potentupsetting subject matter preclude endorsemfor children, who are obviously unlikely t
