Lesson Objectives• Understand the theory of Smoothtrac function• Know where to position the Smoothtrac beam on the tow arm

Smoothtrac Installation• Smoothtrac has brackets that weld directly to the tow arm• Swing arms attach to the welded tow arm brackets

• Beam can be moved in and out• Beam can be moved forward and rearward

Each Sonic Tracker

measures and averages individually ...

Smoothtrac Theory of Operation

…and then the System Five Control Box averages all of the Trackers

Smoothtrac Theory of Operation

•The control box averages the 4 Tracker’s measurements

•The Control Box has additional electronic averaging

SAS Placement on the Tow Arm•The center of the beam is the averaging balance point, or pivot point

• Position the center of the beam where you would a single Tracker

SAS Placement on the Tow Arm• For best results, position the center of the SAS beam using the same analogy as any grade sensor

• For Smoothness control, typical placement would be near the center of the tow arm

Tracker Height

• Recommended working height of Trackers for paving still applies• Commonly closer to 24” with SAS beams – OK!• OK to have trackers at different heights

Tracker Height Position

•When the screed is raised, the front Tracker will lower• Consider height of SAS beam• Swing up front tracker if needed

Smoothtrac Position• Absolute mathematical analogy would not recommend any averaging device to sense the freshly laid mat• Practical application proves that this is an acceptable practice

Smoothtrac Position• Third Tracker may end up positioned over the pile in front of the screed• Just move the Tracker forward as needed

Drill a new hold in the SAS beam
