A warm, caring environment for pets and their people—and advanced veterinary technology.

Paumanok is the Indian name for Long Island. It literally means, “island in the shape of a fish.” It was immortalized in a poem by the famous Long Island native, Walt Whitman.

Dr. David Roy Hensen, DVMDiplomat of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners

(canine and feline)Dr. Deirdre M. Hensen, V.M.D.

Hospital Philosophy

Everyone at the Paumanok Veterinary Hospital is committed to the highest quality medicine combined with ethics, compassion, family, and community involvement.

Dr. David Roy Hensen and Dr. Deirdre M. Hensen, the husband and wife veterinary owners of Paumanok Veterinary Hospital, have more than 50 years combined experience. They both come from strong family and ethical backgrounds, and their core beliefs are apparent in the practice they’ve built. Paumanok has a warm, friendly, and nurturing environment. The medical quality is state of the art. Paumanok staff, clients, and animal patients are treated with compassion, respect and dignity. Each patient at Paumanok receives superb veterinary care in a warm and friendly environment.

A Caring Environment for Every Pet –Especially Yours! The Drs. Hensen have four dogs (two at home and two handicapped dogs at the hospital), two cats, three horses, two goats, fourteen chickens (producers of Paumanok organic eggs), one rabbit, one guinea pig, and one cockatoo. They understand the human-animal bond and the attachment people have to their pets. Our staff is selected for their comfort with--and compassion for-- animals.

If your pet stays at Paumanok, either as a patient or as a boarder, you can rest assured that our caring staff will attend to his or her comfort, cleanliness and health throughout the stay. We pay strict attention to special dietary needs, and our employees are encouraged to play with the animals.

Paumanok has five kennel areas: two for medical and surgical cases, two for boarding pets, and one for bathing. All rooms have heat and air conditioning. The kennels and runs are specially designed for easy cleaning and disinfection. We have blankets, pillows and towels for your pet’s comfort.

We have outdoor runs, some of which are covered in the event of rain. This gives dogs an opportunity for exercise and fresh air. Hospitalized patients are housed separately from boarding animals. We work to make each cat and dog comfortable at Camp Paumanok. We intentionally limit the number of boarders to ensure a spacious and healthy environment for your pet. But most of all we have the most wonderful staff: a band of animal lovers who give more than you could ever wish for in the care of your pets.
