WHAT S NEW e Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society By Mary Ann Shaffer In 1946 writer Juliet Ashton is looking for a subject for her new book. A letter arrives from Dawsey Adams of Guernsey, who has acquired a second hand book she once owned. A correspondence begins between Juliet and the members of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. These letters tell of their experiences while Guernsey was occupied by the German Army during the Second World War. Together the letters build up a picture of what life was like on the Island. The letters from Juliet to the Islanders build up a picture of her life immediately after the Second World War. The story is told with humour and the characters are delightful. Sound and VisionWith movies, music and loads of informational material about the performing arts, Sound and Vision is the library’s visual and audio feast.

CDs, DVDs, PC games, from $2. Books, scores, magazines all free.

DVD sets

Hooked into a new season of a TV show and eager to catch up on early series you might have missed? Or want to see some old classics? The library has a range of top dramas and comedies right from the early days of television (remember black and white?) through to last year’s shows. Sets cost a little more, but you can keep them for two weeks. Imagine watching 24 episodes of 24 back to back.

Previewing

Can’t decide which CD or DVD to take? Looking for a particular track or just want to make sure a movie is okay for the kids? The library has DVD players with TVs so you can check things out before you hand over your cold hard cash.

The Stage

On the second Wednesday of each month we have musicians, both local and not so local, performing on the stage. Keep an eye on our website and fliers to see what’s coming up. If you’re a musician and you’d like to perform, get in touch with the Sound and Vision librarian. We have a full PA and lighting rig with trained front of house technicians to make our shows go off.

beatbooth

The Library’s music recording room is equipped with an iMac computer running Pro Tools recording software. Pro Tools is the industry standard, so you’ll be able to record tracks anywhere and come and work on them at the Library. Once you’ve finished your masterwork, you can burn it onto a CD and take it home. So if you’ve got a song in your head that’s just waiting to get out, come to beatbooth and unleash it!

pathINTERESTED IN LOCAL HISTORY?The City Library and Archives are planning their second Local History Week. This will be a week long celebration highlighting the rich history of both Palmerston North and the Manawatu region and will run from 14th to 20th September 2009.

Last year the programme included a feast of lunchtime talks on a wide variety of topics (including early rugby in the Manawatu, the Manawatu River, and the Houses of Massey), guided walks around historical sites (including Savage Crescent and the Hoffman Kiln), the launch of our digital library (Pataka Ipurangi: Manawatu Memory Online), and guest speakers such as ex-Mayor Jill White, Historian Dr Jock Phillips, and NZ Author Jenny Pattrick.

The interest and enthusiasm of those who contributed to the programme last year, as well as those who attended events, means that this year we are expecting it will be just as well received.

We would love to hear from anyone who has ideas about this year’s programme or who has a particular area of interest they would like to share with the rest of the community during Local History Week.

Please contact City Archivist Lesley Courtney [email protected], or New Zealand and Pacific Islands Librarian Philippa Elphick [email protected] by 30th June (at the latest) to share your ideas.
