Childhood memories o July are abundant or me o course, twirling sparklers through the humid night air, havingno pressures related to school, listening to the Brewers on thecrackly, old boom box as we worked outside, cookouts withamily and riends, and, i I was very lucky, making annual visitswith my older siblings to Pierce Park or the annual Fourth oJuly estival and reworks display to name a ew.

As I consider my list, I realize that none o these memorieswould exist i not or the reedom we have in this country. It was

just announced that our death toll in Aghanistan has hit 2000aer more than 3900 days o involvement. Tats like the entirepopulation o villages like Deereld, Wautoma or Denmarkbeing wiped out. Te number o lives changed increases thisgure exponentially.

I so respect the military parents, too. Te thought o that nalgoodbye sends shivers up my spine. What selessness on the part oour armed orces and their amilies. It makes me wonder i I havethat in me that willingness to sacrice in such an enormous way.

What does all o this have to do with a health and wellness maga-zine? Well, its the reedom, I think. Te reedom we all have to

make healthy choices in regard to our nutrition, tness, personalgrowth, wellness, relaxation, and organic and green living.

As usual, our authors have contributed numerous articles tohelp us on this journey. Isnt our reedom o speech a wonderulthing? Please read on!

Also, remember that the Fourth o July is a wonderul time tocontemplate, acknowledge and appreciate the reedoms we have inthis great country. Tis month, lets increase our eorts to thank a

veteran, to appreciate all o the healthy choices we have and to bea little more seless.

    In health and happiness,

eeding a healthy and sae diet to Fluy or Fido hasbecome a priority or many pet owners. Pet ood recalls aretoo prevalent, and reading pet ood labels can be conusing

and deceiving. Regulations or the pet ood manuacturing indus-try are very lack and poorly monitored. Tereore, as pet owners,we must take a proactive role in understanding pet ood labels andour pets nutritional needs.

ws t ?Cats are true carnivores and dogs are omnivores (although moreaccurately classied as opportunistic carnivores). A caninesdigestive system is built to thrive on an all meat and bone diet,

Many mass market pet oods thathave the perception o being the healthiest oods on the market arenot healthy oods at all. Many are owned by large conglomeratesthat spend tremendous amounts o money on marketing to createa healthy image, and have been very successul doing so.

Find an alternative to a prescription diet. Unortunately the

majority is made rom the large conglomerate companies andcontains meat by-products, corn, soy, animal by-products, grainragments, and chemical preservatives and has very little meatand sometimes none at all. Many healthy alternatives are availableor obesity, allergies, sensitive stomachs, urinary health and earlykidney disease. Color is everywhere in the world, and research consistentlyshows that without variety in color, people and animalsbecome unbalanced and unhealthy, physically, mentally

and emotionally. Like everything else, color is energy. Light, spread out into its various vibrational wavelengths, is seen as

various colors, as when a rainbow is created by rain or a waterallreracting sunlight. Tis is the visible portion o the electromag-netic spectrum. While every possible color is present in a rainbow,we generally group it into seven colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.

When light alls on any object, its structure causes some o theenergy vibrations, or light waves, to be absorbed and others to be

reected. Our eyes register the reected wave vibrations as color.Tese vibrations are transmitted as electrical impulses via theoptic nerve to the visual cortex or interpretation, and to the hypo-thalamus, the pituitary gland and the pineal gland. Tese glandscontrol the autonomic nervous system, the endocrine system, andso our behavior, emotions, subtle energy systems and cellular levelunctions according to how much light and which wavelengths arereceived. Whether we are aware o it or not, color controls mucho how we eel and behave, and can disturb or improve our healthand well-being.

Color and light have been part o traditional medicine or thou-sands o years in all parts o the world. However, modern medi-cine has long discounted any healing actions using these methodsuntil relatively recently. Nowadays various wavelength lights andlight emitting instruments are used increasingly in conventionaltreatments. Even more options are available or general use in thecomplementary energy medicine community, and many can belearned by anyone or individual use.

Probably the most requently used system or color designationsis the chakra system (the seven spinal chakras aligning to the sevencolors o the rainbow). Also used are numerology, kabala andastrology. Te colors needed by an individual may be determined

by dousing with l-rods or pendulum, by energy testing, or an itive healer or aura seer.

HEIdI KEllEy, o VERona, and HER dog, BEEy Boy, had quite a seren

tous meeting. Some would attribute the encounter to the law o attraction.

A ew years ago, at a time when her beloved, elderly pug was near death, K

had a conversation with a riend who worked at a nearby animal hospital abou

impending loss. Te riend, who was aware o Kelleys interest in French Bulld

happened to mention that they had a rescue dog that they had nursed bac

health and that needed a home it was a French Bulldog.Considering that this breed costs upwards o $1000, Kelley never imagined tha

would be able to get one o her own. Suddenly, at a time when she had to say goo

to her long-time companion, Beey needed a home. O course, Kelley welcomed

dog into her amily and continues to be amazed by Gods plan.

Prior to meeting Beey, I didnt understand how our thoughts could cr

things in our lives, how what we are thinking and eeling sends o a vibratio

the universe and ultimately creates our lie. It was a hard concept to grasp,

continued to learn more about it and pay closer attention to what my thou

were, how I projected mysel and how I lived my lie, Kelley explains.

Ater this experience, Kelley says her lie really started to change and she has m

ested many things in her lie due to the power o the law o attraction, which

been practiced or centuries. Tis universal law deals with energy vibrations and

they attract things with that same requency the higher the vibration, the bettechances o attracting your needs and desires. In assisting clients, I clear energy bloc

the body to have the right vibration to attract what the person wants, says Kelley.

OurUltimateReality.com points out that it can be difcult or those o u

the northern hemisphere to keep our vibrations high due to the dark, cold

wet days o winter. Another important aspect o the law o attraction is pos

thinking, the practice o which is crucial. Te way we think and the thought

Understanding energy itsel can be complicated (see sidebar). Imagine a

gited childs reaction to discovering his or her intuitive abilities getting

physically touched by spirits and sensing the presence o their energy. While

it may seem natural at rst, societal norms can cause these individuals to

push this ability back, deep inside themselves, as they grow into adulthood

where it may stay orever, or not. From a very young age, Heidi Kelley had

these intuitive abilities. It was a git she shut down as she reached adoles-

cence, which is common among the gited.

As Kelley looks back on her lie today, she clearly sees how shutting down her

abilities aected her over the years. When I didnt ollow my intuition, I got in

trouble, she refects. Te last straw was about three years ago, when Kelley ound

hersel eeling o while waiting or her dental appointment to remove a bad

tooth. She suppressed these uncomortable eelings, even as they grew worse. In

the end, the dentist pulled the wrong tooth! Tat was it!

Tis is who I am! she declared; opening up about and accepting her abili-

ties in just the last couple years. I decided who cares what people think!

Coming out in this way, she became much more open to all o the possibilities.

One night, the idea came to her o incorporating her git into her career as a

licensed realtor. Te next morning she Googled it, but nothing elt right about

her search results. Ater some soul searching and discovery, she patiently let her

idea evolve. Te result was Te Intuitive Realtor/Healer.

Since the dwellings and spaces we live and work in are lled with vibrating

chi, we can be aected by the energetic residue rom anyone or anything

that has been there, as well as the energies o the earth. Tese energies are

retained in the walls, foors, ceilings, urniture and other objects, states Anci-

entInspirations.com. In order to create energetic balance in the space, it is

best to clear any energy that might negatively aect the current occupants.

Tis includes any spirit energies that may be present, the site goes on to say.

Once the old energy is cleared out, vibrant, resh energy can enter.

Tis is the case whenever there are energetic disturbances in the Earth, as

well. Occupants may eel lethargic, argumentative or emotionally drained.

    Pets are also aected.

Kelley realized that the energies present in a dwelling can aect howquickly it sells, the number o interested buyers and ultimately the price or

which it sells. She is able to use her git to locate and clear disturbances, and

raise, or bring in, new energy. Whatever my clients want (happiness, calm-

ness, etc.), I put that energy in to attract it. Kelley explains. She goes on to say,

I work together as a team with my clients, using our energy to maniest their

dreams, whether they are buying or selling a home or needing to realign and

raise the vibration in their body.

All o Kelleys space clearing techniques are environmentally riendly. I

dont bring anything into the environment that might possibly harm or cause

an allergic reaction (e.g., traditional burning o sage), explains Kelley.

Armed with her unique abilities, Kelley moved over to Keller Williams

Realty, with Jessica Fox, team leader, welcoming her with open arms. And, her

work opening hersel up to spirits and energy around her has paid oor both her real estate clients and others in the community who seek out

her services. Despite the poor housing market o late, Kelley continues to

be successul. She even receives numerous inquiries rom across the country,

    including Hollywood.

i you are not sleeping well, chances arethat your days are a tired blur. Its all youcan do just to make it to dinner without

taking a nap. Youre tired and need a real rest, but when your head hits the pillow, sleep isbrie and the morning comes too ast. Sowhat started this vicious cycle? How can westop it and get some real rest?

Te primary reasons or insomnia arenumerous, but or most o us, it starts with aperiod o stress. As we will see, stress triggersa cascade o hormones that ultimately, liter-ally keep us awake. Factors like sickness and

environmental stress, relationship issues, latenights and emotional discomort all play arole. Even positive events, such as vacationsor kids, can wear us out. We know that stresshas many aces, but to the body, on a cellularlevel, its all the same.

Whether its physical, mental or emotionalstress, the adrenals pump out hormones thatcontrol the reaction and come to the rescue.Over and over again, they stimulate ourbody to get up and go! Adrenaline oods thebody in various orms like epinephrine thatgets our heart pumping, regulates energy, upgrades our immune response and keeps usgoing even when were dead tired. I the stresscontinues long enough, the adrenal glandseventually slow down and burn out, causingtrue adrenal atigue.

When adrenal burnout sets in, the produc-tion o cortisol slows down. oo bad, becausecortisol is a very necessary hormone thatghts inammation caused by stress, and it

also helps the adrenals provide stable energylevels. A clear example o inammation-related exhaustion is ound with suerers oacute bromyalgia.

SO whAT dOeS ThiS hAve TO dO wiTh

    geTTiNg A gOOd NighTS SleeP?

I we have chronic atigue, we dont produceas much cortisol during the day, so the bodycatches up by producing more at night.Okay, thats good, but cortisol keeps us awake! It normally jumps up to high levels in themorning, starts breaking down glucose or

energy and gets us going. I it is high at night, your sleep is poor or you cant sleep at all.Tere it is: stress leads to adrenal exhaustionthat depresses cortisol production, whichrecovers at rest but keeps you awake.

hOw dO yOU KNOw if yOU hAve

    AdreNAl bUrNOUT ANd whAT CAN

    yOU dO AbOUT iT?

Fortunately, it has become at lot easier toget answers. At clinics like ours, we test oradrenal/cortical burnout by sending out asample or sophisticated lab testing. A typicaladrenal stress panel will have the ollowingcombination o tests: cortisol levels; DHEAand insulin levels (which are both antagonistso cortisol); IgA levels to determine generalimmune response; and gluten antibody levelsto test possible allergies to common grainslike wheat, barley, rye and oats. Four dierentsaliva samples are taken at dierent times othe day to account or the normal hormonal

cycles aecting cortisol. Te collection pdure is ast and may be done at home.

Te results are oen surprising. All oinormation creates a prole o your adrstress response and can be graphed to clearly. It then becomes possible to sunatural methods to biochemically balancactors that are draining the lie out o Oen, we help our patients by introduplant-based, bio-identical cortisol in theso the body doesnt need to boost it at nresulting in you getting a good nights sTen, it may be as simple as changing

stressors, like the late nights or long houwork, until your adrenal glands recovull unction. Or, maybe you need to chyour diet to reduce the inammation-cing oods. On the ip side, i your yhormones are low, causing a lack o enthose can be boosted as well.

Oen, when were burned out and geatigue sets in, it seems like there are no options. With our modern tools o anathere is hope. Adrenal atigue and insomare oen linked together. Motivation means somethingdierent to everyone, espe-cially when it comes to tness.

Motivation can lie dormant or ages andthen one day assert itsel, sending you ona journey to discover your own personalhealth and tness. Some people seem tobe inherently motivated to work out andeat well, always ready or a great workoutand easily able to pass on birthday treats atthe ofce. Te goal o this article is to helpyou understand the concept o positiveand negative motivation, and to provideyou with some thinking points to helpyou understand your own motivations ortaking steps to live a healthy liestyle.

    Negative motivators are generally ueled

by some unpleasant result or thing. Forexample, say your mother didnt take goodcare o hersel. As a result, she got cloggedarteries and had quadruple bypass surgery. She also developed type 2 diabetes, whichshe would have had a good chance opreventing with a daily exercise routineand better eating habits. Ten, her backstarted giving her trouble because o all theextra weight she carried, so she was orcedto have back surgery that severely restrictedher ability to do any type o activity orexercise. Tis then caused her to becomeeven more sedentary, thus perpetuatingher health problems. You have watchedthis happen, all the while imploring her totake better care o hersel so that her healthdid not decline urther. At a certain point, you become so aware o the consequenceso her actions and so araid o ending up

just like her, that you step up your eorts toexercise and to eat well because you want to

AVOID the unpleasant ate o ending up insuch poor health like your mother.

Positive motivators are GOOD thingsthat you WAN, or things that you wantto achieve. Here is an example: You reallyenjoy riding your bike outdoors. However, you dont seem to be able to ride as astor as ar as you would like to because youhavent put too much eort into eatingwell or into exercise that complements theactivity o bicycling. One day, you happento see a yer advertising a 20-mile bicyclerace. Included in the registration ee isan optional training program to help youprepare or the ride. You get excited andsign up; knowing that your commitment tothe race and the eeling o accomplishment

you will get by completing it will motivateyou to spend more time riding. Plus, younow have access to a group that will helpyou train or the race, and you will makenew riends as you participate in the weeklyrides. So, you sign up. You go through thetraining, and meet other people who arepositively motivated by the race to ueltheir bodies with healthy ood and to prior-itize their exercise time. You learn moreabout proper nutrition and complemen-tary orms o exercise that improve yourbicycling perormance. Sooner than youthought, you notice signicant improve-ment in your perormance and in how youeel. Ten, race day comes. You completeyour 20 miles in less time than you thoughtpossible and eel energized at the end. Itsa big accomplishment, and when someonetells you about a 50-mile race coming up ina ew months, you say yes perpetuatingthe cycle o healthy habits.

Tere is a clear dierence between ptive and negative motivators. What m

vates you? Tere is no right answer, the answer that is right or you. So ponand then get out there. Your good heawaiting!

vegetables, whole grains, good atsand quality lean protein are thestaples in a healthy liestyle. Tey

will not only provide many great healthbenets, but also improve your energy leveland memory. Research indicates that certainnutrients actually stimulate brain unction.

B vitamins, especially B6, B12 and olicacid, protect neurons by breaking downhomocysteine, a natural occurring aminoacid that is toxic to nerve cells. Tey arealso involved in making red blood cells, which carry oxygen. Foods like spinach

and other dark leay greens, broccoli, asparagus, strawberries, melons, blackbeans and other legumes, citrus ruits andsoybeans are excellent choices.

Antioxidants like vitamins C and E, andbeta carotene ght ree radicals, which areatoms ormed when oxygen interacts withcertain molecules creating an oxidativestate. Free radicals are highly reactive andcan damage cells, but antioxidants can inter-act with them saely and neutralize them.

Antioxidants also improve the ow ooxygen through the body and brain.Foods like blueberries and otherberries, sweet potatoes, red tomatoes,

    spinach,

broccoli, green tea, nuts and seeds, andcitrus ruits are good options.

Omega-3 atty acids areconcentrated in the brain andare associated with cognitiveunction (the brains unctioningprocesses). Tey are our healthyats that protect the body againstinammation and high cholesterol. Cold-water sh, such as salmon, herring, tuna, halibut and mackerel, walnuts and walnutoil, and axseed and axseed oil are excel-lent choices.

Because older adults are more prone toB12 and olic acid deciencies, a supple-ment may be an option or seniors. Tosewho do not like eating sh can take anomega-3 supplement or get it throughplant sources. Nutrients work best whenthey are consumed in oods, so try yourbest to eat a broad range o colorul plantoods and choose ats that will help clear, not clog, your arteries.

Crystal healing is a orm o vibrational medicine in whichsubtle energy given o by a crystal is used to treat thebody, mind, spirit and emotions. Crystals exhibit a type o

orderly perection, which helps to bring healing light and lovingencouragement to all beings. Te most important thing to keep inmind when beginning to use crystals or healing is that a crystalspower is relatively inert until you intentionally direct its energy. Itis not the crystal that possesses healing energy; it is your intent toheal that can maniest results.

A simple way to utilize the healing power o stones is with thecreation o a crystal grid. Grids consist o crystals placed in concise, geometric arrangements in order to aect the ow o energy or aspecic purpose. Te properties o the stones used, combined withtheir arrangement in a sacred geometric conguration, creates aunique energy requency that can be used to enhance your inten-tion and maniest your desired result.

Trnge: represents empowerment, amplication, the trinity(the power o three) and preservation.

Squre: represents balance, equality, protection, earth energy, stability, the our directions (the compass points) and harmony.

Pentgon: represents harmony and a connection with theve elements (earth, air, re, water and spirit/ether).

hexgon: represents, transormation, the joining o the et(spiritual) and the physical (grounding), the balance o maleemale energy, spiritual expansion/ascension and transcende

A crystal grid may be as large or as small as you like. Youuse any size o stones. You may use all one type o stone or mdierent types (depending on your purpose and intention).

o activate and enhance the energy o your grid, you maya clear quartz crystal laser wand to energetically link all crywithin the grid. When using a laser wand in this way, it becom
